    Abstract
Over the past decade, the power industry in many countries around the world has been undergoing massive changes to introduce competition. In power systems under transmission open access, an optimal schedule of generation of units to satisfy the demand at the minimum production and transmission costs with consideration of system operation constraints is an important issue. In this paper, a method for centralized economic dispatch in deregulated power systems is presented. The considered constraints are minimum and maximum power generation of units, capacity of transmission lines and ramp rate limits. Genetic algorithm is used to solve a nonlinear objective function. Simulations are performed...

    Abstract
In this paper we discuss an improved method for the calculation of Available Transfer Capability (ATC) in a restructured power system. The ATC calculation is performed through an optimal power flow approach. The objective function is to maximize the sum of the receiving-end load in a specified area as well as to send generation to other control areas while a minimum cost of generation is continuously achieved. The constraints are ac power flow equations and system operation limits. It is assumed that the generation cost curve of each generator is available. A genetic algorithm is used for the optimization process. An IEEE 30 bus test system is used for testing the proposed algorithm and the...

A multi-regional model for generation expansion planning after restructuring in developing countries

    , Article International Review of Electrical Engineering ; Volume 6, Issue 4 , July , 2011 , Pages 2068-2078 ; 18276660 (ISSN) Fakehi, A. H ; Ghofrani, M. B ; Saboohi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In many developing countries, restructuring is usually started by dividing vertically integrated power systems into regional companies. Analysis of the procedure of restructuring requires appropriate analytical tools for modeling interactive behavior of the regional companies in a competitive energy market. The problem of generation expansion planning in the competitive environment becomes more complex where the new generation units are constructed on the basis of decentralized decisions. Recent studies of long term expansion planning show that market equilibrium modeling is an effective technique to analyze the long-term optimum development of the generation systems. In the present paper, a...

    Abstract
In this paper two novel search methods for solving optimal power flow (OPF) have been presented and compared. Electricity is undergoing a restructuring process, moving from integrated environment towards deregulation and reduced regulation all around the world. Electrical energy markets are going to be created as a consequence of this process. In order to meet technical issues, system operator would need to apply some ancillary services. Reactive power is one of the most important ancillary services, which should be injected to power network in order to decrease the total loss and control the voltage profile. The main goal of this study is to present a method based on a Locational Marginal...

    Abstract
Procurement and pricing of electric power and ancillary services is one of the most important issues of electricity market manager under new restructured environment. Ancillary services are necessary to provide security and reliability constraints applied to the dispatching and scheduling problem while they are essential for commercial functions. In a market payments should be based on energy and ancillary services capacities. Spinning Reserve (SR) is an ancillary service that is coupled with energy capacity, should be procured and priced via a joint economic dispatch mechanism to provide a right signal for all electricity customers. This paper presents a new approach for joint economic...

    , Article World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology ; Volume 79 , 2011 , Pages 448-452 ; 2010376X (ISSN) Ebrahimi, M. R ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper presents a practical scheme that can be used for allocating the transmission loss to generators and loads. In this scheme first the share of a generator or load on the current through a branch is determined using Z-bus modified matrix. Then the current components are decomposed and the branch loss allocation is obtained. A motivation of proposed scheme is to improve the results of Z-bus method and to reach more fair allocation. The proposed scheme has been implemented and tested on several networks. To achieve practical and applicable results, the proposed scheme is simulated and compared on the transmission network (400kv) of Khorasan region in Iran and the 14-bus standard IEEE...

According to the economic principles, invisible hand of market can facilitate global optimum, just...

Determination of available transfer capability with implication of cascading collapse uncertainty

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Vol. 8, issue. 4 , 2014 , p. 705-715 ; ISSN: 17518687 Salim, N. A ; Othman, M. M ; Serwan, M. S ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Safdarian, A ; Musirin I ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Available transfer capability (ATC) provides important information for power marketers and planning sectors in restructured power systems. The stochastic nature of power system behaviour, however, made ATC determination a difficult and complicated task. A stochastic framework has been established for ATC calculation with implication of uncertainties in transmission failures, hourly peak loads and system cascading collapse. The proposed ATC calculation framework is based on parametric bootstrap technique which enables generating random samples of system operating condition with uncertainty at a predefined confidence interval. The IEEE RTS-96 network is employed to demonstrate the...

A heuristic fuzzy decision-based solving of redispatching problem for congestion management in restructured power systems

    , Article Journal of Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems ; Volume 24, Issue 3 , 2013 , Pages 563-574 ; 10641246 (ISSN) Meyabadi, A. F ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
This paper proposes a new technique to manage congestion in a short-run market model. The method consists of an iterative algorithm to search and apply a sequence of bilateral power exchanges among the generators that would optimally reduce and completely remove the congestions. A combination of fuzzy decision principle and sensitivity analysis is developed to choose the best exchange and AC load flow is used to apply it on the network in the iterations. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated in a case study on IEEE 118-bus system, and results are discussed in the paper in comparison with the mathematical and evolutionary-based optimization techniques

A new approach for long-term electricity load forecasting

    , Article ELECO 2013 - 8th International Conference on Electrical and Electronics Engineering ; 2013 , Pages 122-126 ; 9786050105049 (ISBN) Safdarian, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Aghazadeh, M ; Ozdemir, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Long-term electricity load and price forecasts have become critical inputs to energy service provider (ESP) decision makings in restructured environments. This paper presents a three-stage hierarchical approach for long-term electricity load forecasting. These stages are called yearly trend model (YTM), weekly trend model (WTM), and daily trend model (DTM). The first stage fits an appropriate function to data and extracts its yearly trend. The weekly and daily trends are then extracted using the Box-Jenkins method in WTM and DTM, respectively. For doing so, candidate trends are identified using auto correlation function (ACF) and partial auto correlation function (PACF) plots. Then, Akaike...

Probabilistic unit commitment with wind farms considerations

    , Article 2007 Large Engineering Systems Conference on Power Engineering, LESCOPE'07, Montreal, QC, 10 October 2007 through 12 October 2007 ; January , 2007 , Pages 73-77 ; 9781424415830 (ISBN) Hosseini, H ; Abbasi, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper proposes a method for unit commitment in restructured power systems with high penetration of wind farms. As wind is an intermittent source of energy and can not be predicted with high accuracy, reliability of wind farms compare to conventional power plants is lower. By increasing penetration of wind farms in generation system, reliability of power system will decrease. Therefore, reliability constraint should be added to unit commitment (UC) formulation. On the other hand, wind is a green source of energy; additionally environmental crisis is very important issue in the 21st century. By adding emission constraint to UC, wind energy will be valued. Both reliability and emission...

Dynamic Security Assessment in Restructured Power Systems

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Kheradmandi, Morteza (Author) ; Ehsan, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis addresses the problem of dynamic security assessment in power sys-tems with an emphasis on its application in restructured power systems and issues arising in its applications. The new electric utility environment has an immedi-ate consequence of emphasis on reliability and secure operation of power systems. This requires faster and more precise methods to assess the dynamic aspect of se-curity. On the other hand, this issue is becoming challenging when the determined dispatch might not be accommodated due to violation of the limits. This thesis addresses the problem of dynamic security assessment in power sys-tems with an emphasis on its application in restructured power systems...

Operation Planning in Restructured Power System Integrating Wind /Solar Energy

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Siahkali, Hassan (Author) ; Vakilian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In power system operation, the term "operation planning" carries a wide range of meaning. For some utilities, operation planning denotes primarily short-term planning tasks (up to several days), such as load forecasting, unit commitment, hydro-thermal coordination, transaction pricing, fuel allocation, and security analysis while for other companies operational planning is interpreted in a wider context, and include mid-term planning activities (up to several months), such as maintenance planning, fuel budgeting, rate forecasting, network planning, relay coordination, etc. The mid-term planning provides the link between the long-term and short-term planning programs. The duration of this...

    Abstract
This thesis presents a new method for scheduling wind generation companies to participate in day-ahead market. The assumed market structure of this thesis, considers day-ahead energy market and balancing market, simultaneously. The stochastic model of this, implements a robust function to face the uncertainties of these markets. The risk of participation in these market are controlled with Information Gap Decision Theory (IGDT). Finally the allowable percent of each uncertain parameters are introduced to met an specific level of profit for the company

Developing a Decision Support System for Generation Expansion Policy Making in Iranian Deregulated Electricity Market

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi Takalloo, Maziar (Author) ; Kermanshah, Ali (Supervisor) ; Bahramgiri, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Iranian Power industry has undergone fundamental changes since deregulation started in 2003. Currently, bulk trade of electricity in the industry is mainly conducted through a day ahead wholesale market, representing over 98 percent of the exchange of electricity within the grid. Although the current market regime is under operation for over 4 years, several political, cultural and operational obstacles have hindered effective evolution of the restructuring process. Low political support from privatization of the industry assets backed by lack of confidence and trust in market economies in general, and low economic incentive of the market players has slowed down formation of an effective...

An Energy Supply System Model for Expansion Planning in the Restructured Environment

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Fakehi, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Ghofrani, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Energy industries in many countries have initiated the process of privatization. Restructuring of energy systems is usually started with dividing the vertically integrated national systems into regional companies. Due to the geographical dimension of energy systems and natural monopoly in many activities, the process of privatization has started with segmentation of the vertically integrated national systems into regional companies. Thus, regional independent companies are formed that include a collection of producers and consumers of energy in their geographic area. These regional companies are economic entities who are pursuing a policy of maximize profit. On the other hand, exchange of...

Linked Planning of Power Grids and Subsidy Policies on Using Photovoltaic Cells for Residential Electricity Supply

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Balmaki, Saeed (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, due to restructuring in the electric power industry, distributed generation has become one of the most important subjects and DGs and renewable energy sources have been increasingly expected as a supplement and an alternative to a conventional large scale central power system. their success depends not only on the distribution of the available renewable energy sources in a region but also on the power grids connectable capacity in the area. Photovoltaic system is one of the best RESs for residential electricity supply because it is noiseless and solar power is widely available and households can use it via photovoltaic cells in their homes. There are two major problems...

Calculation and Distribution of Transmission Loss in Restructured Power Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi Bojdani, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The electric power industry is experiencing important changes brought about by the deregulation. Electric power generators and users engage in power transactions which take place over the transmission system and create losses. Transmission losses represent up to 1⎯5% of the total generation, and cost millions of dollars per year. Consequently, the problem of “who should pay for losses” arises and the satisfactory sharing of the transmission system utilization costs among all market participants has become a key issue. Unfortunately, losses are expressed as a nonlinear function of line flows, and it becomes almost impossible to calculate exactly the losses that are incurred by each generator,...

A Study of Intragroup Block-Trading Incentives on the Tehran Stock Exchange

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Behrad, Amin (Author) ; Heidari, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Ebrahimnejad, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Using the data of the Tehran Stock Exchange, we analyze the characteristics and explanatory factors of major intra-group and out-of-group transactions and test the tunneling hypothesis in intra-group transactions. We find that out-of-group transactions can be largely explained by changes in control or management, firm size, and the type of the firm. However, intra-group transaction properties mostly depend on the difference between the parent company's cash flow rights in the buyer and seller companies. Also, in the final analysis, we conclude that many intra-group transactions are made to change the structure of the business groups, especially when investment companies buy shares of listed...
