Design and Fabrication Function of RBS Sample

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sahafipour Fard, Mohammad Amin (Author) ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In order to improve the performance of structures against earthquake loads, engineers believe that both minimizing the rigidity and maximizing the ductility; can lead to minimization of the energy input of the structure. However, the minimized energy shall be depreciated as much as possible in different stories so that the damage to the main and Irreplaceable structural members remains as low as possible.
Steel with high strength and ductility is relatively an ideal material for this purpose; however, the ductility level of this material is much higher than that is normally in use. In order to have a better utilization of the steel ductility, RBS (Ribbed Bracing System) was invented in...

Analytical Evaluation and Parametric Study of RBS (Ribbed Bracing System)with Finite Element Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mazaherimeybodi, Forouzandeh (Author) ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Toufigh, Vahab (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, an innovative system, called ribbed bracing system (RBS), proposed to deal with poor performance and deficiency of brace buckling under compression loads. RBS is an additional component added to common brace system which prevents the buckling problem of conventional bracing systems. By applying tensile load, the ribs lock together and the system starts enduring tension. Since the compressive force begins, ribs slide on each other and the system endures only a trivial force. Two kinds of RBS mechanism are introduced: completely-closed RBS (CC-RBS) and self-centering RBS (SC-RBS). In the former mechanism, the length of the brace is reduced by applying compression loads; while...

    , Article Asian Journal of Civil Engineering ; Volume 12, Issue 3 , June , 2011 , Pages 375-393 ; 15630854 (ISSN) Tabeshpour, M. R ; Golafshani, A. A ; Monzavi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper a new ribbed bracing system (RBS) is proposed capable of performing as a variable stiffness system that can be used for controlling structural deformations and frequency shifting to compensate seismic energy. RBS has two important advantages. Because of ribbed system, the compressive member is rigidly moved like a piston and a cylinder and therefore it is a buckling prevented system. Also it is possible to use this system as a semi-active system by considering the story drifts and global structural damage and control the system if it is necessary to be open or closed based on the operational criteria assigned in the system. RBS has no need to any actuator and large power...

    Abstract
Controlling the structures under seismic excitations is a great challenge in the earthquake engineering. In this regard, bracing systems have been presented and applied to provide additional rigidity for the structures. However, conventional bracing systems are buckled under compressive forces. In this research ribbed bracing system (RBS) is proposed to deal with the buckling problem of conventional bracings. Full capacity of RBS is used under cyclic loading. Ribbed bracing system is constructed by adding a supplement part with a ribbed mechanism to the conventional bracing systems. As the supplement part is locked when the bracing is under tensile forces, the bracing system can absorb...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadi, Hossein (Author) ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Toufigh, Vahab (Supervisor)
    Abstract
As a result of numerous earthquakes happened in recent decades, widespread failures were observed in conventional braced frames, which were mostly created due to buckling of the braces under compression. To find a solution to overcome this problem, Ribbed Bracing System (RBS) was developed by Golafshani et al. in 2004. In this study, continuing the experimental investigation and considering the previous outcomes, the RBS bracing was redesigned based on some modifications. Then, two half-scale RBS braces with pinned frames were constructed and tested under cyclic loading. RBS systems were utilized in two options, CC-RBS and SC-RBS, in X configuration, the first of which was constantly...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini Amirabadi, Hamed (Author) ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Toufigh, Vahab (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Placement of control and bracing systems in a structure is one of the most important factors affecting the effectiveness of the system in reducing responses to earthquakes. In other words, a control system with a proven effectiveness in earthquake does not reduce the structure responses unless used with proper placement. The performance of Ribbed Bracing System (RBS) in enhancing seismic response of structures, especially in preventing the buckling of bracing under compression and removing residual displacements, is approved by analytical and experimental studies, but optimal placement of such systems in structures has not been studied yet. Hence, in this research the optimal placement...

    Abstract
One of the most common failure modes of structures in earthquakes is soft story failure which causes by discontinuity of lateral force resisting elements like braces. so the ground floor acts as a soft floor. In this case columns are imposed to large deformation and plastic hinges are formed at top and bottom of the columns. This case is named as story mechanism (severe drift of the story). In most of this case building collapsed or going to collapse. To resolve this problem, different solutions are presented. One of the strategies under section (2-10) 2800 code is increase of designed load in columns of the soft floor. This measure cause to Significant increases in the sections of the...

Performance of Jacket Platforms Equipped with RBS (Ribbed Bracing System) under Dynamic Loads

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hajinoori, Yaghoob Ali (Author) ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Tabeshpour, Mohamad Reza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Offshore platforms are one of the most important structures in oil-rich countries, so that their economic benefit makes it very expensive to stop their usage. Therefore, it is essential that their performance is not disrupted by earthquake or the tidal waves made by severe storms. The new high performance semi-active bracing system, developed by Golafshani et al, is capable of removing the permanent drift of stories at the end of excitation and concentrating structural damage in braces. In the conventional bracing systems it is assumed that the braces buckle under little compressive forces; but in this new presented completely tensile-ribbed bracing system (RBS), buckling of compressive...

Seismic performance of ribbed bracing system in passive control of structures

    , Article JVC/Journal of Vibration and Control ; Volume 23, Issue 18 , 2017 , Pages 2926-2941 ; 10775463 (ISSN) Arzeytoon, A ; Golafshani, A. A ; Toufigh, V ; Mohammadi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this article, a novel passive control system, ribbed bracing system (RBS), has been proposed to deal with the buckling problem. RBS is a bracing system with a simple mechanism that can be installed in braces as a supplemental part. The behavior of RBS is similar to that of conventional braces under tensile loading. However, under compressive force, it endures an insignificant force and prevents the braces from buckling through length reduction. In addition, seismic damage is concentrated in the bracing system of the structures equipped with RBS, decreasing the dissipated hysteretic energy in other structural members. There are two different mechanisms for RBS: 1) completely-closed RBS...

    , Article Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering ; 2017 , Pages 1-22 ; 1570761X (ISSN) Mohammadi, H ; Toufigh, V ; Golafshani, A. A ; Arzeytoon, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, an innovative seismic lateral force resisting system for tall buildings is introduced. In this system, a novel supplemental part, ribbed bracing system (RBSyst), is attached to Braced Tube System, creating a modified BTS. RBSyst is a supplemental part which is attached to the conventional bracing members to eliminate buckling problem. The behavior of RBSyst under tensile force is similar to that of the conventional braces. However, in compression, it prevents the braces from buckling by length reduction. In order to evaluate the efficiency of this new BTS system by performance-based assessment, two typical 40-story tall buildings with different story modules equipped with this...

    Abstract
In this investigation, seismic behavior and design coefficients of the ribbed bracing system (RBS) are evaluated by considering various archetypes that reflect configuration variability. RBS is a lateral bracing system with a unique mechanics that prevents buckling-induced damage by allowing free deformation of brace under compression. After successful experimental validation and numerical evaluation of RBS specimens in previous studies, FEMA P695 methodology is adopted in this study to subject 48 archetype structures to incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) procedure. Evaluation of the probabilistic collapse capacity of the archetypes against the code requirements reveals that RBS system can...

    Abstract
In this article, the ribbed bracing system is proposed and evaluated through experimental and numerical studies. Ribbed bracing system is composed of a supplemental part with ribbed interfaces that is attached to a brace member and allows for its free length reduction to prevent the development of compressional forces responsible for buckling of the brace. Ribbed bracing system provides two different mechanisms: completely closed ribbed bracing system and improved-centering ribbed bracing system which are validated, in this study, through design, fabrication, and testing of small-scale specimens subjected to cyclic quasi-static loading. As verified by the test results, in improved-centering...

    Abstract
In this paper, we present a numerical simulation of a laminar, steady and Newtonian flow of f-graphene nanoplatelet/water nanofluid in a new microchannel design with factors for increasing heat transfer such as presence of ribs, curves to enable satisfactory fluid mixing and changing fluid course at the inlet and exit sections. The results of this study show that Nusselt number is dependent on nanoparticles concentration, inlet geometry and Reynolds number. As the nanofluid concentration increases from 0 to 0.1% and Reynolds number from 50 to 1000, the Nusselt number enhances nearly up to 3% for increase in fluid concentration and averagely from 15.45 to 54.1 and from 14.5 to 55.9 for...
