Modeling and Phase Noise Improvement in Ring Oscillator

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadeghi Ghogheri, Hesam (Author) ; Sharif Bakhtiar, Mehrdad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
We present a model for noise in Ring Oscillator in order to improve their phase noise. Each Ring Oscillator consists of some nonlinear blocks. We study effect of these blocks on phase noise. In this study, noise behavior of each block is analyzed and a design guide for improvement of noise characteristic is presented.
It is essential for phase noise improvement to obtain insight about operation mechanism of oscillator. A comprehensive model is presented to get this insight. In this model, we show how a noise current produces phase noise also, a formula for phase noise is derived.
In second step, phase noise of Ring oscillator is improved by using the model. Active inductor is used in...

An Efficient Hardware Trojan Detector Using On-chip Ring Oscillator

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khodadadi, Mohsen (Author) ; Hesabi, Shahin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays integrated circuits are extremely vulnerable to hardware trojans (HT). Hardware trojans can be injected into the ICs in design or fabricate phase, and damage system’s functionality or security. In this thesis, we first describe hardware trojan definition, classification and types of HTs, negative effects, detection ways and analysis of them. Then we propose a new solution in order to solve the negative points of previous methods

A ring oscillator-based PUF with enhanced challenge-response pairs

    , Article Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering ; Volume 39, Issue 2 , 2016 , Pages 174-180 ; 08408688 (ISSN) Delavar, M ; Mirzakuchaki, S ; Mohajeri, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    IEEE Canada  2016
    Abstract
Physical unclonable functions (PUFs) are powerful security primitives that provide cheap and secure solutions for security-related applications. Strong PUFs provide a large set of challenge-response pairs (CRPs) and are suitable for device authentication. Weak PUFs produce a small number of CRPs and can be used for key extraction. In this paper, we propose a novel method to enhance the CRP set of traditional ring oscillator-based PUFs (RO-PUFs). RO-PUFs are one of the most reliable types of PUFs and the best fit to implement on the field-programmable gate arrays. To the best of our knowledge, our method provides the maximum number of CRPs compared with the state of the art. In addition, the...

Optimum design of high power and high efficiency mm-wave fundamental oscillators

    Abstract
A systematic method to design high power and high efficiency mm-wave fundamental oscillators is presented. By using a linear time variant method, we first obtain the optimum conditions and show that these conditions can be significantly different for high power and high efficiency fundamental oscillation. Next, we propose a modified multistage ring oscillator with interstage passive networks to exploit the full capacity of the transistors in terms of output power or efficiency. Analytical expressions are also derived to determine the value of passive elements used in the oscillator. To verify the validity of the method, a 77-GHz two-stage (differential) VCO is designed in a 65-nm CMOS...

Analysis of Single Electron Transistor with Metallic Island and its Application in Logic Circuits

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tavassoli, Hesam (Author) ; Faez, Rahim (Supervisor) ; Bagheri Shouraki, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
As the traditional MOSFET is reaching to its scaling limit, it is crucial to find an alternative. Single Electron Devices have shown promising features, such as nano-scale dimensions and extremely low power consumption that can lead to new generation of integrated circuits. In this thesis we have presented an analytical study of metallic single electron devices, particularly single electron transistors (SET). We have illustrated our study with some major logic applications of SET. The main goal of this thesis is to develop simulation software for single electron circuits, comparable with the well-known commercial software “SIMON”, which can provide steady-state and transient analysis of the...

Clock and Data Recovery based on Phase Shifting and Accordion Oscillator

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fatemi Mofrad, Ali (Author) ; Fotowat Ahmady, Ali (Supervisor) ; Akbar, Fatemeh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The continuous growth of network traffic and people's demand for higher data rates, have driven wireline communication systems towards higher data rates. In these systems, the power consumption of these transmitters and receivers is a crucial and influential factor. This paper presents two different solutions to reduce the power consumption and area of these systems. In the first solution, a low-power phase shifter with variable phase and amplitude control is introduced. The changes in these parameters are mutually orthogonal, ensuring that a change in one characteristic does not affect the others. This phase shifter can be used to generate clock pulses with different phases in wireline...

Improving hardware Trojan detection using scan chain based ring oscillators

    , Article Microprocessors and Microsystems ; Volume 63 , 2018 , Pages 55-65 ; 01419331 (ISSN) Asadi Kouhanjani, M. R ; Jahangir, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In recent years, the security of integrated circuits (ICs) has received more attention as usage of ICs made by untrustworthy foundries has increased in safety-critical systems [1]. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for fingerprinting the delay of functional paths in a sequential circuit that have millions of transistors, like processors. We present a method for inserting Ring Oscillators (ROs) into scan chain for measuring the delay of each functional path inside the chip. Using the proposed method, the payload part of Trojans will be detected according to their size and cell types. Our method can be used by power-based Trojan detection approaches for finding the trigger part of...

A Low-power clock generator with a wide frequency tuning range and low temperature variation: analysis and design

    , Article Journal of Circuits, Systems and Computers ; Volume 29, Issue 1 , 2020 Fazel, Z ; Shokrekhodaei, M ; Atarodi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper presents a quadrature-clock generator based on a novel low-power ring oscillator with a wide frequency tuning range and low temperature variations. The proposed ring oscillator consists of two differential delay cells with a new controllable capacitive load of an MOS transistor. The wide tuning range is achieved due to transistor utilization in different regions and considering its resistance not to narrow down the frequency range. Delay cells are biased with a minimum possible value of a proportion to absolute temperature current to decrease frequency variations to temperature while the power consumption is kept low. The validation of the proposed methods is proved by circuit...

    Abstract
A four stage LC-ring oscillator is presented. Eight different phases are generated in which there in 45 degrees phase difference between consecutive outputs and direction of phases is defined. Nmos capacitors in parallel with constant capacitors are used for coupling between stages. The control voltage is applied to Pmos varactors to adjust the oscillation frequency. The advantages of this structure are the rather small inductors size, low power consumption, and tuning curve linearity. The proposed structure is simulated in 0.18um CMOS technology. Power consumption for each stage is 4.8mW from a 1.8B supply. The proposed VCO has a phase noise of -121dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset from the center...
