Numerical studies on the performance of Saccardo ventilation system in emergency fire scenarios

    , Article Applied Mechanics and Materials ; Vol. 527 , 2014 , Pages 146-151 ; ISSN: 16609336 Ganjiazad, R ; Kazemipour, A ; Afshin, H ; Farhanieh, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, the influence of volumetric flow rate and inclination angle of air jet is evaluated on the performance of a Saccardo ventilation system in a straight rectangular tunnel in case of fire. Simultaneous effects of volumetric flow rate and inclination angle of jet exiting the Saccardo nozzle on the behavior of smoke plume is considered by studying the structure of velocity profile before the fire source. It is found that this factor has a remarkable influence on the behavior of smoke plume and therefore, on the temperatures experienced near the fire. Besides, the influence of tunnel slope on the performance of the Saccardo system to sweep the plume is investigated. It is shown that...

    Abstract
While the population of the cities all over the world is increasing, more and more tunnels and underground transportation passages are being constructed. So, there is an urgent need for designing an appropriate ventilation system for these passages, not only in normal conditions but also for emergency scenarios especially in fire incidents. In the present research, the operation of Saccardo ventilation system, especially in emergency fire scenarios is investigated using computational fluid dynamics methods. Studies conducted in this research are classified into five parts. In the first part, the effect of tunnel ventilation flow rate (due to Saccardo system operation) and its interaction with...

Simulation of Emergency Ventilation, in a Long Road Tunnel Using Water Curtain

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taraki, Mohsen (Author) ; Farhanieh, Bijan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Based on thecnology development, humans are able to shorten the ways by using tunnels. But beside this big benefit, there are some limitations, both in digging and utilization stages. One of the most important challenges in utilization stage is ventilation. Beside the normal ventilation -which is done to reduce the pollutants like carbon monoxide- a special system must be designed to control the hot and high energy combustion products. This system is named emergency ventilation. In this research, emergency ventilation in long road tunnels, using water curtain is simulated numerically using FDS code, and different parameters are investigated. The fuel source in this research is a pool of...

Analysis of CO Distribution in Large Tunnel Fires

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sojoudi, Atta (Author) ; Farhanieh, Bijan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Fire events and the related toxicants such as CO are responsible for many fatalities inthe current century. These hazardous events are more dangerous when they occur in enclosedspaces. In the present study, a theoretical relation is developed for horizontal distribution of COin a large tunnel fire. Then, developed criterion is used to study the effect of rudimentaryparameters such as Heat Release Rate (HRR) of fire and tunnel Aspect Ratio (AR) on CO andtemperature stratification. Theoretical results of various heat release rates and aspect ratios forhorizontal distribution of CO are compared with numerical results using Fire DynamicsSimulator (FDS5.5). It is found that big fires have higher...

Numerical Study of Various Parameters Affecting Ventilation and Fire- Induced Smoke Movement in Curved Road Tunnels

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bahman Shamsabadi, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Farhanieh, Bijan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
When a fire breaks out in a tunnel, due to the enclosure of the interior of the road tunnels, hot and poison smoke quickly spreads in the tunnel. This phenomenon, in addition to destroy the tunnel structure, causes a lot of financial and human losses. In recent years, research into fire control has become more important with the occurrence of numerous accidents in road tunnels and fatalities. Longitudinal ventilation is still the main method for controlling smoke distribution in tunnels due to lower construction costs and acceptable efficiency. Numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the effect of different and effective parameters on fire control and smoke emissions in direct...
