Numerical Modeling of Rocking Of Shallow Foundations Subjected to Slow Cyclic Loading with Consideration of Soil-Structure Interaction

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fathi, Aria (Author) ; Haeri, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Foundation is the lowest load-bearing part of a structure and a part of underneath soil that is affected by the structure load. In fact, foundation transfers the loads from the superstructure to the substructure, preventing excessive settlement of soil or stresses exceeding soil bearing capacity. Indeed, almost all structures are placed on the ground, therefore the effects of soil and structure on each other, which is known as Soil Structure Interaction (SSI), is considered as a key factor in many important and engineered structures. In contrast to structures on a rigid footing, a flexible foundation may show stiffness degradation along with an increase of damping and natural period of the...

Study of Rocking of Shallow Foundations Subjected to Dynamic Loading by Consideration of Soil-Structure Interaction

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amiri, Amin (Author) ; Haeri, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Foundation which is lowest load-bearing part of structure, transfers load of superstructure to substructure. Because structures are usually placed on soils, the response of the soils influences the motion of the structures and the motion of structures affects the response of the soils. This phenomenon is termed Soil Structure Interaction (SSI). One of these mutual effects is the rocking of shallow foundations in which the base of the foundation under dynamic loading may separate from the underlying ground, by rotating about the longitudinal axis. This rotational mode elongates natural period of the soil-structure system and decreases the base shear demands of the superstructure. Indeed...

    Abstract
An axial load-transfer analysis for energy piles is presented in this study that incorporates empirical models for estimating the side shear resistance and end bearing capacity in rock along with associated normalized stress-displacement curves. The analysis was calibrated using results from field experiments involving monotonic heating of three 15.2 m-long energy piles in sandstone. Analyses of the field experiments indicates that poor cleanout of the excavations led to an end restraint smaller than that expected for a clean excavation in sandstone. Specifically, end bearing parameters representative of cohesionless sand were necessary to match the load-transfer analysis to the field...
