    , Article Chemical Engineering and Technology ; Volume 30, Issue 7 , 2007 , Pages 862-869 ; 09307516 (ISSN) Ghazanfari, M. H ; Rashtchian, D ; Kharrat, R ; Vossoughi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Capillary pressure curves, which have been employed for a long period of time by researchers interested in pore size distribution, are commonly obtained from experimental measurements. The dynamic capillary pressure that influences the flow is affected by many factors including the pore size characteristics and pore scale dynamics. Hence, it is important to investigate the variation of the estimated pore size distribution with capillary number. In this study, a glass type micromodel is considered as the porous media sample. A parametric probability density function is proposed to express the pore size distribution of the porous model, which is also measured using an image analysis technique....

Control of a nonlinear system using the saturation phenomenon

    , Article Nonlinear Dynamics ; Volume 42, Issue 2 , 2005 , Pages 113-136 ; 0924090X (ISSN) Shoeybi, M ; Ghorashi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
In this paper, a theoretical investigation of nonlinear vibrations of a 2 degrees of freedom system when subjected to saturation is studied. The method has been especially applied to a system that consists of a DC motor with a nonlinear controller and a harmonic forcing voltage. Approximate solutions are sought using the method of multiple scales. It is shown that the closed-loop system exhibits different response regimes. The nature and stability of these regimes are studied and the stability boundaries are obtained. The effects of the initial conditions on the response of the system have also been investigated. Furthermore, the second-order solution is presented and the corresponding...

Residual flux mitigation of protective current transformers used in an autoreclosing scheme

    Abstract
To avoid saturation of a protective current transformer (CT) operating under an autoreclosing scheme, the CT size should be chosen much higher than a similar CT operating under a single-step fault clearing scheme. The main reason for this significant difference is that the residual flux (caused by the first stage of the fault) cannot be noticeably reduced during the deadtime interval of the reclosing process and, therefore, the occurrence of a subsequent fault can extremely saturate the CT. In this paper, a low-cost, low-power electronic device is developed and introduced to demagnetize the CT under the reclosing deadtime interval. It will be shown that by using this device, the required...

A new noise-immune method to detect protective CT saturation and its release instants

    , Article 2016 IEEE International Conference on Power and Renewable Energy, ICPRE 2016, 21 October 2016 through 23 October 2016 ; 2017 , Pages 284-287 ; 9781509030682 (ISBN) Borzooy, A ; Vakilian, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
CT saturation is a phenomenon that can cause inaccurate fault current measurement and may result in related protective relay failure to block the high current flow under a fault condition in a power system. Hence, it is required to develop a method to detect occurrence of CT saturation with a good accuracy under presence of noise in a power system. In this paper, a new method having the afore-mentioned characteristics is presented. The main benefit of exploiting the introduced approach here for detecting CT saturation is its high level of reliability as well as its reasonable operational speed in CT saturation detection. In other words, these two properties are implemented to this method....

The effect of gypsum cementation on the mechanical behavior of gravely sands

    , Article Geotechnical Testing Journal ; Volume 28, Issue 4 , 2005 , Pages 380-390 ; 01496115 (ISSN) Haeri, S. M ; Hamidi, A ; Tabatabaee, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
The behavior of a cemented gravely sand is studied using triaxial tests. Drained and undrained tests were performed on dry and saturated specimens, and stress-strain characteristics of the soil, along with volumetric and pore pressure changes, were identified. The gypsum plaster was used as the cement agent and was mixed with the soil in different percentages. The tests were done in the usual range of confining pressures, from 25 to 500 kPa. Test results show that dilation occurs even at the highest confining stress and the least cement content. The behavior of the cemented soil is found to be more brittle in drained condition than the undrained one. However, the brittleness of soil...

Current-Transformer Saturation Compensation for Transformer Differential Relays

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 30, Issue 5 , 2015 , Pages 2293-2302 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Hajipour, E ; Vakilian, M ; Sanaye-Pasand, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Current-transformer (CT) saturation threatens accurate discrimination between internal fault current and magnetizing inrush current of a transformer and endangers the proper operation of a differential relay. Thus, compensation of CT saturation could substantially improve the performance and security of transformer differential relays. So far, almost all of the technical literature in this field has focused exclusively on fault current compensation. However, this paper proposes an efficient compensation algorithm to reconstruct the fault and inrush currents which are distorted by CT saturation. Some of the attractive features of the proposed method are its accuracy, fast response time,...
