Characterisation of phase segregation during back extrusion of ZA27 semisolid alloy

    , Article Materials Science and Technology ; Volume 23, Issue 1 , 2007 , Pages 113-118 ; 02670836 (ISSN) Mola, J ; Aashuri, H ; Shalchi Amirkhiz, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Effort was made to characterise segregation tendency of mechanically stirred ZA27 alloy with back extrusion as a thixoforming process. At sufficiently high ram speeds, at which liquid phase flows forcefully, pooling of the heavy liquid phase owing to gravitational segregation contributes to homogeneity of back extruded products in terms of solid phase distribution, The amount of this contribution depends on the contact time of this liquid with solid skeleton during liquid exertion to the clearance. Hence, at high ram speeds, small rams which demand taller initial slugs are more efficient in minimising the segregation. However, in the case of low speed back extrusion tests, liquid impotency...

Effect of molybdenum on grain boundary segregation in Incoloy 901 superalloy

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 46 , 2013 , Pages 573-578 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Tavakkoli, M. M ; Abbasi, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this paper, the effect of molybdenum on the grain boundary segregation of other elements was studied in Incoloy 901 superalloy. Initially, five alloys were prepared with different percentages of Mo by using a vacuum induction furnace. Then, these alloys were remelted by Electro-slag remelting (ESR) process and after homogenizing at 1160 °C for 2. h followed by air cooling, were rolled. The effect of Mo on segregation of elements was evaluated with Scanning Electron Microscopy, Linear Analysis, and the mechanical tests. The results showed that the grain boundary segregations of elements in Incoloy 901 superalloy were decreased by increasing of molybdenum content up to 6.7% and the...

    Abstract
A numerical model has been developed for the determination of liquid flow permeability through columnar dendrite during growth and segregation in Al-Si mushy alloys. The model is inclusive of two stages, first numerical evolution of the dendrite shape during growth, and second numerical determination of the permeability. Simulation results shown which Si concentration by transform of dendrite shape dendrite could reduce of the interdendritic liquid permeability. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

On the heat treatment of Rene-80 nickel-base superalloy

    , Article Journal of Materials Processing Technology ; Volume 176, Issue 1-3 , 2006 , Pages 240-250 ; 09240136 (ISSN) Safari, J ; Nategh, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Rene-80, as an alloy for production of the jet turbine blades, shows high mechanical properties as well as microstructure stability during the high temperature engine operation. In this study we tried to have a deep insight on the microstructure of the cast Rene-80 and the evolution of microstructure during the different stages of the relatively complex GE class-A heat treatment. Although the solution heat treatment homogenized the chemical alloy segregation resulted from the casting to some extent, it did not cause all the casting γ′ particles to dissolve completely in the matrix. Primary aging caused growth in the residue particles as well as growth of the new precipitated particles, which...

    Abstract
Data are presented on the solidification of aluminum alloys and their macro segregation behavior. Three alloys with different solidification ranges were prepared in two temperatures. Two types of molds were also prepared by sand and metallic materials. The solidification of Al alloys were studied and the effects of four parameters were determined, including cooling rate, casting temperature, degassing and nucleation effects on solidification and a comparison was conducted to Scheil model performance. Three types of aluminum alloys (Al-12.1%Si, Al-6.9%Si and Al-4.4% Cu) with short, medium and wide solidification ranges were studied and the results showed that degassing, nucleation, increasing...

Prediction of equilibrium mixing state in binary particle spouted beds: Effects of solids density and diameter differences, gas velocity, and bed aspect ratio

    , Article Advanced Powder Technology ; Volume 26, Issue 5 , 2015 , Pages 1371-1382 ; 09218831 (ISSN) Karimi, H ; Dehkordi, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The state of solids mixing can be considered as a key factor in accomplishment of high efficiency and a uniform product in gas-solid fluidized-beds operating with several different particle sizes. In the present work, coupled DEM-CFD approach was used to carefully investigate the mixing process of binary particles in flat-bottom spouted beds. In this regard, simultaneous effects of particle specifications, operating conditions, and bed dimensions on the equilibrium mixing state of solid mixture were evaluated in detail. Moreover, taking into account the contribution of various parameters, the obtained simulation results were used to draw a correlation for predicting the equilibrium mixing...

    Abstract
A numerical study on mixing/segregation phenomena in a pressurized fluidized bed with large particles of Geldart D type of binary density but same diameter with high velocity gas was performed by the use of discrete particle simulation. Particle mixtures are composed of spherical particles with 2mm diameter and 1g/cm3 flotsam density and different jetsam densities of 1.25, 2 and 2.5g/cm3 with jetsam volume fraction of 0.5. The particles are initially packed approaching perfect mixing state in a rectangular bed and then fluidized by gas uniformly injected at the bottom of the bed. Effect of increase of pressure and density ratio was investigated and mixing/segregation behavior is discussed in...

Silver nano-islands on glass fibers using heat segregation method

    , Article Materials Chemistry and Physics ; Volume 113, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 63-66 ; 02540584 (ISSN) Sharifi, N ; Taghavinia, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
A new method for fabrication of silver nano-islands on glass fibers using a top-down process is introduced. A thin layer of silver chemically coated on the surface of the glass fibers evolves into silver islands by heat treatment. The effect of the concentration of the initial solution and the temperature were investigated. Segregation was more clearly observed for lower solution concentrations and higher temperatures. The temperature of 500 °C was found optimum where separated islands form. At higher temperatures, the coagulation and burial of silver islands occur. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and diffused reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) were...

Liquid segregation behavior of semi-solid AZ91 alloy during back extrusion test

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 477, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 822-827 ; 09258388 (ISSN) Khosravani, A ; Aashuri, H ; Davami, P ; Narimannezhad, A ; Hadian, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The present work is focused on the segregation behavior of semi-solid AZ91 magnesium alloy with Ca content. For this purpose a simple back extrusion test was used and the semi-solid billet was fabricated through a cooling slope. Different shear rates were obtained by variation in ram speed and extrusion ratio. Microstructures of the extruded samples were investigated and liquid segregation was described by Darcy's law. Homogeneity was improved by using higher shear rates, produced either by increasing plunger velocity or extrusion ratio, while at very high shear rates the air was entrapped inside the wall of the extruded sample. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Cu surface segregation in Ni/Cu system

    , Article Vacuum ; Volume 84, Issue 4 , 2009 , Pages 469-473 ; 0042207X (ISSN) Rasuli, R ; Iraji zad, A ; Ahadian, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We report experimental evidence of Cu surface segregation in Ni/Cu system, during deposition of Ni film onto Cu substrate at room temperature and during heat treatment in vacuum. Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) by Tougaard's analysis results show that surface segregation defeats in competition with increase in Ni thickness and terminates when thickness of Ni increase to more than 4 nm. Surface energy and concentration were calculated using contact angle measurements and the results confirm that segregation reduces the surface energy. Surface segregation during heat treatment at 150-220 °C range as a function of time initially shows linear mass...
