Study of the Effects of Powder Dispensing Mechanism on Selective Laser Sintering Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahmoodi, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Movahhedy, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Additive manufacturing (Simply called A.M.) is a group of manufacturing technologies that is developing rapidly and is being used widely in some industries like car manufacturing, Aerospace and producing Biomedical devices, In a way that some researchers believe that A.M. methods will change the future of manufacturing. One of the most important A.M. techniques is the Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) method that is mostly used in industrial applications. A SLS machine has a lot of sub systems and mechanisms that have key role in the Laser Sintering process. One of the mechanisms of SLS machine is the Powder Dispensing mechanism that produce layers of unsintered powder as thin as 100 microns...

The Effect of Different SLS Parameters on the Density of Polymer-Metal Parts

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Montazeri, Ali (Author) ; Movahhedi, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is one of the powder-based Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology in which parts built by CO2 laser. In this research work, Titanium-PMMA-Stearic Acid powders are mixed together to produce parts by Indirect Metal Laser Sintering (IMLS) method. The optimum process parameters such as energy density, Percentage composition of Titanium-PMMA and Scan Sintering are obtained by adopting the Taguchi method for getting the maximum density and minimum porosity. Experiments are planned by Taguchi’s Mix-L8 orthogonal array. According to the results obtained from this study, the percentage of combination Ti-PMMA and Energy density, respectively, are a major parameters that...

Optimization of Scan Algorithms in Selective Laser Sintering

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Manshoori Yeganeh, Ahmad (Author) ; Movahhedi, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Khodaygan, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most important manufacturing methods using technologies AM, is the SLS method. This method because it would significantly reduce the construction time is the ability to build a variety of materials, is pervasive. The SLS devices input is part CAD file which is then part layered, a layer of powder is poured on the bed. Each layer is defined contour on the part and then scanned by laser inner layer is hatched by laser. Scanning algorithms and hatching in the SLS is an important part of building that has an impact on properties part and a lot of research has been done about it. synthetic scan algorithms presented in this study. The purpose of this algorithm is that part warpage and...

Modeling and Analysis of the Powder Deposition Mechanisms of Selective Laser Sintering Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shakiba, Abdorreza (Author) ; Movahedi, Mohamad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Selective laser sintering is a technique which uses a laser as the power source to sintering some selected points at a bed of powder in order to create a solid structure. In this research the SLS mechanisms of powder deposition is simulated and surface smoothness and layer density created by each mechanism is computed. For this purpose roller, blade and hopper mechanisms are simulated. For this simulation, polyamide 12 (PA2200) which is a common material is used. In this simulation at first powder specifications are extracted according to the references and for particle shape instead of using the spherical particle shape we use a certain shape that is more close to reality which created by...

Experimental Study and Simulation of Ultrasonic Vibration Effect on Powder Spreading in Selective Laser Sintering Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghovvati, Sadegh (Author) ; Movahhedi, Mohamadreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Selective laser sintering is an additive manufacturing technique based on fusion of powder bed, wherein after spreading a powder layer, a focused laser beam directs onto selected points of powder bed to fuse powder particles together. This process is repeated layer by layer until the final part is created. Although utilization of blade as a conventional powder spreading (CPS) mechanism has a good compression ability, the fixed contact line between blade and powder bed surface results in improper powder flowability and increasing shear forces applied on underneath layer. In this study, in order to obtain the basis for conducting practical experiments, discrete element simulation of powder...

Feasibility of Fabrication of Functionally Graded Titanium Dental Implants Using SLS Technique

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hashemi Fesharaki, Ramin (Author) ; Farahmand, Farzam (Supervisor) ; Movahhedy, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dental implants should be biocompatible. This ability cause bone growth beside implant and increases stability of implant. Manufactoring method and materials used in implants are main parameters affectig biocompatibility of implants. Fabrication of functionally graded structures is a novel method to increase biocompatibility. Stress shielding is one of the main causes of failures in current dental implants. This phenomenon takes place due to different young modulus of dental implants and host bone. Pouros structures remedial this problem and implant’s young modulus comes closer to host bone. The aim of this project is to study feasibily of fabrication of functionally graded titanium dental...

Reducing part Warpage by Optimizing Process Parameters in Selective Laser Sintering

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadi Dastjerdi, Ali (Author) ; Movahhedy, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Akbari, Javad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the newest methods of rapid prototyping is SLS . In this day, SLS is more common in compare others methods, because it uses little time and man does not nearly interfere in the producing stages of part which is made by SLS method. Also, sophisticated parts, which cannot be built by other methods, can be produced by SLS method. One of the disadvantages of SLS method is low dimensions accuracy of parts produced in this way. This problem has two major reasons: Shrinkage and Warpage. These two phenomena are created because of ununiformed temperature distribution. Others features which have effect on dimensions accuracy are residual stress, porosity and removing space of between powder...

Preparation of Polymeric and Polymer Coated Metallic Particles for Application in SLS Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Agha Babaei Bani, Hamed (Author) ; Ramezani Sadatabadi, Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, incremental manufacturing processes are rapidly evolving and expanding. These processes are used for the rapid fabrication of prototypes as well as the fabrication of parts with high geometric complexity and high dimensional accuracy. These processes are used in various fields such as manufacturing industrial parts, medicine, precision casting, etc. One of the most important incremental manufacturing processes that has received much attention today is the selective laser processing process. One of the problems of this process is the limitation in the use of different polymers for processing. Polyamide 12 currently has about 90% market share due to its high processability. However,...
