Estimation of physical parameters in dynamical systems driven by linear partial differential equations is an important problem. In this paper, we introduce the least costly experiment design framework for these systems. It enables parameter estimation with an accuracy that is specified by the experimenter prior to the identification experiment, while at the same time minimising the cost of the experiment. We show how to adapt the classical framework for these systems and take into account scaling and stability issues. We also introduce a progressive subdivision algorithm that further generalises the experiment design framework in the sense that it returns the lowest cost by finding the...

Presented within this paper is the identification of impact force acting on a simply supported beam. The force identification is an inverse problem in which the measured response of the structure is used to determine the applied force. The identification problem is formulated as an optimization problem and genetic algorithm is utilized to solve the optimization problem. The objective function is calculated on the difference between analytical and measured responses and the decision variables are the location and magnitude of the applied force. The results from simulation show the effectiveness of the approach and its robustness to the measurement noise and sensor location

Vehicle Identification Sensors Location Problem with the Purpose of Origin-destination Estimation

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hadavi, Majid (Author) ; Shafahi, Yousef (Supervisor)
Origin-Destination (OD) table is an important input for managing and controling processes of transportation systems. OD flow estimation based on the observations of traffic sensors is a famous way of attaining this table. Technology developments in recent years reduce the cost and improve the quality of the results for this method. This research explores the methods for applying one of these technologies, vehicle identification systems, with the purpose of OD flow estimation. In this research several location models for vehicle identification systems are presented. These models have better performances comparing to the existing models in the literature. Furthermore, location models for some...

Effects of structural configuration on vibration control of smart laminated beams under random excitations

    , Article Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology ; Volume 24, Issue 5 , 2010 , Pages 1119-1125 ; 1738494X (ISSN) Zabihollah, A ; Sharif University of Technology
The influence of structural configuration on vibration responses of smart laminated beams under random loading is studied. The effect of laminate configurations and locations of sensors/actuators in the smart system is also investigated. The layer-wise approximation for displacement and electric potential is utilized to construct the finite element model. The closed-loop control response is determined through an optimal control algorithm based on the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR). The correlation coefficient between the input random force and the applied actuating voltage for various configurations is also computed. It is revealed that for softer configurations, the correlation...
