    Abstract
Severe plastic deformation (SPD) processes have received less attention at low temperatures (sub-zero and cryogenics). Hence, in this study, SPD of a commercially pure aluminum (AA1050) through Multi-Directional Forging (MDF) at Low-Temperature (LTMDF) and Room-Temperature (RTMDF) is investigated for different strains. Multi-directionally forged (MDFed) samples were annealed at 150, 250, 350, and 450 °C for 1 h, and some samples were stored at room temperature for periods up to 1 year. Results show that the hardness values and flow stress of LTMDFed aluminum are higher than those of RTMDFed ones. The ratio of yield strength to hardness for LTMDF is similar to that for RTMDF. Surprisingly,...

Microstructrual evolution of aluminum 6061 alloy through tube channel pressing

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Vol. 615 , 2014 , pp. 139-147 ; ISSN: 09215093 Farshidi, M. H ; Kazeminezhad, M ; Miyamoto, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The evolution of microstructure and the mechanical properties of an aluminum 6061 alloy tube subjected to a novel severe plastic deformation process called tube channel pressing were studied. Results show that the tube channel pressing causes an impressive grain refinement and strengthening of the material. As an illustration, mostly ultrafine grained tube (D-=760nm) bearing the yield strength of 352. MPa can be obtained after 5 passes of tube channel pressing. Additionally, the tube channel pressing causes the heterogeneous grain refinement resulting in a bimodal distribution of size of grains after 7th pass. Therefore, it can be inferred that the main microstructure refining mechanism...

Accumulative roll bonding and post-deformation annealing of Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy

    , Article Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance ; Vol. 23, issue. 12 , 2014 , pp. 4429-4435 ; ISSN: 1544-1024 Moghaddam, A. O ; Ketabchi, M ; Afrasiabi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Accumulative roll bonding is a severe plastic deformation process used for Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of grain refinement of Cu-9.5Al-8.2Mn (in wt.%) shape memory alloy using accumulative roll bonding and post-deformation annealing. The alloy was successfully subjected to 5 passes of accumulative roll bonding at 600 °C. The microstructure, properties as well as post-deformation annealing of this alloy were investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimeter, and bend and tensile testing. The results showed that after 5 passes of ARB at 600 °C, specimens...

On the natural aging behavior of Aluminum 6061 alloy after severe plastic deformation

    Abstract
Natural aging behavior of the aluminum 6061 alloy after a novel Severe Plastic Deformation process called Tube Channel Pressing (TCP) was studied. For this purpose, Vickers microhardness test was used to investigate the changes of mechanical properties while TEM and XRD observations were utilized in order to characterize microstructural evolution during natural aging. Results show that Si-enriched precipitates appear and coarsen rapidly in the first few days of natural aging of TCPed aluminum 6061 alloy which causes consecutive increase and decrease of Vickers microhardness, respectively. Similarly, other alloying elements such as Cu and Fe lead to formation of coarse precipitates during...

Deformation behavior of severely deformed al and related mechanisms through warm tensile test

    Abstract
Flow stress and ductility behaviors of the annealed and severely deformed Al were investigated at warm deformation temperatures. Constrained groove pressing (CGP) method as a severe plastic deformation process was used. The tensile test was carried out at the temperature range of the 298-573 K and strain rate range of 0.001-0.1 s−1 to present the elevated temperature deformation behavior utilizing hyperbolic sine constitutive equation. The flow stress of the CGPed sample is increased with the number of CGP passes and decreased with temperature. Dynamic recovery and strain softening are found as main restoration mechanisms. Flow stress amounts are not remarkably affected by the strain rate....

    Abstract
An aluminum-magnesium alloy was friction-stir processed in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles which were pre-placed in a groove on the surface to produce a composite. Field emission-scanning and transmission electron microscopy studies show that solid state chemical reactions occur between the Al-Mg matrix and the ceramic particles upon the severe plastic deformation process. The microstructure of the aluminum alloy consists of a coarse grain structure, large complex (Fe,Mn,Cr)3SiAl12 particles, and small Mg2Si precipitates. After friction stir processing, a deformed grain structure containing rod-like Al-Fe-Mn-Si precipitates is attained, along...
