Total tearing energy of two layers determined separately by single tensile test is equal to tearing energy of bilayer sheet. It means that the bond between two layers has no effect on tearing energy

The influence of roll bonding parameters on the bond strength of Al-3003/Zn soldering sheets

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 487, Issue 1-2 , 25 July , 2008 , Pages 417-423 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Movahedi, M ; Madaah Hosseini, H. R ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Al-3003/Zn bi-layer soldering sheets were produced using roll bonding process at different reductions in both cold and hot conditions. The bond strengths of the bi-layer sheets were measured by peel test before and after supplemental annealing treatment. The peeled surfaces were examined using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that by increasing the reduction in thickness during rolling and/or the annealing treatment the bond strength improves. Additionally, the decrease of initial sheet thickness and increase of rolling temperature can effectively improve the bond strength. Microscopic examinations show that the fracture type of Al-3003/Zn sheets is...

    Abstract
Global warming and other adverse environmental effects of fossil fuels have forced humans to consider clean and renewable energy resources. In this context, hydrogen production from water splitting reaction is a key approach. In order to reduce required overpotential for water oxidation reaction, it is necessary to use low cost and earth abundant electrocatalysts like Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn nanostructures. Herein, cobalt nanostructures on steel-mesh substrate were applied. Electrochemical method was used for growth of Co nanoflakes because of its simplicity and scalability for commercial approach. On the other hand, using carbonaceous support layers including nanomaterials such as...

    Abstract
We study two-dimensional (2D) hole arrays drilled into a perfect conductor slab covered with a graphene sheet. Such arrays support the extraordinary transmission of electromagnetic waves and allow tunability via graphene properties. We investigate the effect of graphene on transmission spectra by proposing an accurate analytical circuit model for the structure, where the graphene contributes an admittance component at the interface. The model demonstrates how extraordinary transmission can be tuned via the graphene conductivity. We study the free-standing structure, where the hole array is covered by a graphene sheet on both sides of the conductor slab, and a substrate-bound hole array...

    Abstract
In this study, graphene oxide fibers are introduced as new graphene oxide (GO) membranes with the capability of ion selectivity. Graphene oxide fibers, like other macro structured membranes, are always associated with cavities and defects. To solve this problem, a 50% combination of graphene oxide suspension including small sheets with an average size of ~ 0.5 µm2 and large sheets with an area of more than 10 µm2 was used. According to the morphological results of scanning electron microscopy, as well as the amount of ionic transport through the fiber, reduction of cavities and its defects were confirmed. Moreover, it was found that ionic current through fibers consist of large and small GO...

    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of annealing temperature and time on mechanical properties and bond strength of aluminum clad steel sheet are evaluated. The results indicate that there exist an optimum annealing temperature and time for achieving a suitable formability and bonding strength between the clad layer and base metal. At this annealing time and temperature, the brittle intermetallic layer at the intimate interface of the layers is minimized. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Correlation between Luder strain and retained austenite in TRIP-assisted cold rolled steel sheets

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 447, Issue 1-2 , 2007 , Pages 174-179 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Emadoddin, E ; Akbarzadeh, A ; Daneshi, G. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
In developed multiphase high strength, high formability TRIP-aided steel, Luders bands are observed similar to conventional low carbon steels. Retained austenite as the most effective constituent in TRIP steels, is responsible for Luders band formation as well as other properties such as formability, physical and mechanical properties. In the present study, a correlation between the Luders strain and the retained austenite characterization is proposed and verified by experimental evidences of the work carried out on two types of TRIP steel sheets. Intercritical annealing of cold rolled TRIP steels at different temperatures change the volume fraction of the retained austenite as well as the...

The effects of annealing phenomena on the energy absorption of roll-bonded Al-steel sheets during wedge tearing

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 527, Issue 27-28 , 2010 , Pages 7329-7333 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Beygi, R ; Kazeminezhad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of annealing phenomena on the energy absorption of Al-steel bilayer sheets, bonded by cold rolling, through wedge tearing. Tearing by wedge is a dissipating energy system that includes three components: cutting, friction and plastic deformation due to bending. In order to find the bonding and annealing effects on energy absorption, the non-bonded bilayer sheets are prepared in the same condition of bonded ones. The results show that energy absorption of bonded sheets is larger than that of non-bonded ones. This is due to different plastic bending moment of bonded and non-bonded bilayer sheets. Whenever the bond is improved by heat...

Butt joining of Al-Cu bilayer sheet through friction stir welding

    , Article Transactions of Nonferrous Metals Society of China (English Edition) ; Volume 22, Issue 12 , 2012 , Pages 2925-2929 ; 10036326 (ISSN) Beygi, R ; Kazeminezhad, M ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Butt joining of Al-Cu bilayer sheet produced by cold roll bonding was studied through friction stir welding (FSW). A defect free joint was obtained. Flow patterns and mixing of two layers during FSW were investigated. Microstructural investigations and hardness profile measurements were carried out. It is shown that material flow in stir zone leads to the formation of banding structure in Cu layer at advancing side. Traces of Al particles along with Al-Cu intermetallic compounds exist in the fined grain region of this banding structure which leads to higher hardness values

The effects of intermediate and post-annealing phenomena on the mechanical properties and microstructure of constrained groove pressed copper sheet

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 515, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 162-168 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Rafizadeh, E ; Mani, A ; Kazeminezhad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Commercial purity copper sheets were subjected to a severe plastic deformation technique known as constrained groove pressing (CGP). The effect of pass number, intermediate and post-annealing on the yield strength, hardness and final microstructure of the copper specimens were investigated. The initial pass increases the strength much more than the subsequent passes. Intermediate and post-annealing up to 300 °C cannot change the mechanical properties significantly and even in some cases improve the strength and hardness while reduce the hardness inhomogeneity. Microstructure after post-annealing at elevated temperatures shows abnormal grain growth. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Investigate the Formation of Metal Sheets by Damage Mechanics

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amirshekari, Yaser (Author) ; Asempoor, Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the oldest and most used methods in shaping metals is the formation of metal sheets. In designing the process of printing, it's important to know how much the strain on the sheet prior to slipping is. In order to predict the permissible strains in the two-axis stretch of the sheet, they introduced an empirical diagram called the shape-forming diagram. There are various methods for analyzing the formation of metallic sheets, which can be referred to by M-K method, GTN method, continuous damage mechanics method (CDM). In this research, we have tried to obtain the shape of a metal sheet in various strain paths by studying the method of CDM and modeling the mechanical behavior of the...

Estimation of Springback in Sheet Metal Stamping Using Inverse Finite Element Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Marzban, Bahador (Author) ; Asempour, Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This work presents a quick method in estimation of spring back effect in sheet metal forming. In this method, the so called Inverse Finite Element Method (IFEM) has been adopted for compution of strains and also blank shape. Although the of element used is membrane, the effect of bending/ unbendiing is considered by addition of some extra forces as the bending forces to the nodal forces. The results of strain distribution obtained by IFEM are applied to another algorithm developed for computation of the spring back . this algorithm has been developed for the sections with plane starin assumption. Therefore, spring back of longitudinal parts, can be estimated by this method in a short time....

Experimental Study of Liquid Sheet Breakup in Cross Flow

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Olyaei, Ghader (Author) ; Kebriaee, Azadeh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Injecting liquid fuel into the cross flow of air provides high penetration of the liquid, rapid mixing with air, and increased efficiency. This method has widespread applications in the propulsion systems of gas turbines, scramjets, turbine blade cooling, and fuel injection for engine afterburners. One of the design strategies for future aircraft engines is to reduce pollutants using fuel spray into the cross flow instead of direct jet fuel injection and using renewable energy sources. The applications of cross flows include injecting fluid through rotating pressure injectors in exhaust flows, injecting fluid through pressure-rotating injectors in radial injectors, and using slinger...

Forming limit diagrams of ground St14 steel sheets with different thicknesses

    , Article SAE International Journal of Materials and Manufacturing ; Volume 5, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 60-64 ; 19463979 (ISSN) Hashemi, R ; Ghazanfari, A ; Abrinia, K ; Assempour, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The influence of sheet thickness on sheet metal forming limits is a controversial issue; while some investigations indicate the considerable influence of thickness on forming limit diagrams (FLDs), others suggest that it is of negligible importance. In the present work, it has been demonstrated that if the thickness-reduction process is chosen so as not to alter the micro structure of the material, the forming limits do not change with variations of thickness. A material which has extensive usage in sheet metal forming processes of automotive industry (St14) has been provided. The initial thickness of the sheet is 1.5mm and using grinding process (which does not alter the microstructure) the...

Mechanical Properties of the Carbon Graphene Sheets with FEM

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moshrefzde Sani, Hadi (Author) ; Hosseini Kordkheili, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, molecular structural mechanics method is employed to calculate the Young’s modules of a two-layered carbon graphene sheet. For this purpose, covalent bonds are modeled using non-linear beam elements and van der Waals interactions are replaced by nonlinear truss elements. Morse potential and Lennard-Jones potential equations are used to simulate the covalent bonds and van der Waals interactions, respectively. For each atom, van der Waals forces are considered from all other atoms located in its cut-off radius. Young’s modulus, bending modules and Poisson’s ratio of single and two-layered graphene sheets were calculated and the results revealed that Young’s modulus decreases...

    Abstract
The amount of rippling in graphene sheets is related to the interactions with the substrate or with the suspending structure. Here, we report on an irreversibility in the response to forces that act on suspended graphene sheets. This may explain why one always observes a ripple structure on suspended graphene. We show that a compression-relaxation mechanism produces static ripples on graphene sheets and determine a peculiar temperature Tc, such that for T

A comparison of low carbon steel and Al-Mg alloy sheets in quasi-static tearing collisions

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 30, Issue 4 , 2009 , Pages 1333-1336 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Kazeminezhad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Through tearing test, the absorbed energy of a low carbon steel and an Al-Mg alloy sheets are compared. The tests are carried out quasi-statically using the wedge tools with different angles. Also, the effects of the inclination angle of sheet to vertical and angle between normal to sheet and edge of wedge are investigated on the energy absorption of both the steel and aluminum alloy. The results show that with increasing the later angles, the absorbed energy is decreased and with increasing the wedge angle, the energy is increased. Comparing the absorbed energy of the sheets with the same thicknesses, it is found that the energy absorption of the steel is higher than that of the aluminum...
