Dynamics of general relativistic spherically symmetric dust thick shells

    , Article General Relativity and Gravitation ; Volume 34, Issue 11 , 2002 , Pages 1847-1853 ; 00017701 (ISSN) Khakshournia, S ; Mansouri, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We consider a spherical thick shell immersed in two different spherically symmetric space-times. Using the fact that the boundaries of the thick shell with two embedding space-times must be nonsingular hypersurfaces, we develop a scheme to obtain the underlying equation of motion for the thick shell in general. As a simple example, the equation of motion of a spherical dustlike shell in vacuum is obtained. To compare our formalism with the thin shell one, the dynamical equation of motion of the thick shell is then expanded to the first order of its thickness. It is easily seen that the thin shell limit of our dynamical equation is exactly that given in the literature for the dynamics of a...

    , Article Thin-Walled Structures ; Vol. 85, issue , December , 2014 , p. 350-358 Shakouri, M ; Kouchakzadeh, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Natural frequencies and mode shapes of two joined isotropic conical shells are presented in this study. The joined conical shells can be considered as the general case for joined cylindrical-conical shells, joined cylinder-plates or cone-plates, conical and cylindrical shells with stepped thicknesses and also annular plates. Governing equations are obtained using thin-walled shallow shell theory of Donnell and Hamilton's principle. The continuity conditions at the joining section of the cones are appropriate expressions among stress resultants and deformations. The equations are solved assuming trigonometric response in circumferential and series solution in meridional directions and all...

    Abstract
In this study, the buckling of two joined isotropic conical shells under axial compression and simply supported boundary conditions is investigated. The governing equations are obtained using thin-walled shallow shell theory of Donnell-type and theorem of minimum potential energy. The continuity conditions at the joining section of the cones are appropriate expressions among stress resultants and deformations. The equations are solved by assuming trigonometric response in circumferential and series solution in meridional direction. The results are validated in comparison with the available results in the literature. Effects of semi-vertex angles and meridional lengths on the buckling load...

Heat transfer enhancement in shell-and-tube heat exchangers using porous media

    , Article Heat Transfer Engineering ; Volume 36, Issue 3 , 2015 , Pages 262-277 ; 01457632 (ISSN) Esmaeili Rad, S ; Afshin, H ; Farhanieh, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A numerical simulation has been carried out to investigate the heat transfer enhancement in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger using a porous medium inside its shell and tubes, separately. A three-dimensional geometry with k-ε turbulent model is used to predict the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the flow. The effects of porosity and dimensions of these media on the heat exchanger's thermal performance and pressure drop are analyzed. Inside the shell, the entire tube bundle is wrapped by the porous medium, whereas inside the tubes the porous media are located in two different ways: (1) at the center of the tubes, and (2) attached to the inner wall of the tubes. The results...

Vibration, buckling and dynamic stability of cracked cylindrical shells

    , Article Thin-Walled Structures ; Volume 42, Issue 1 , 2004 , Pages 79-99 ; 02638231 (ISSN) Javidruzi, M ; Vafai, A ; Chen, J. F ; Chilton, J. C ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
The presence of cracks in a structure can considerably affect its behaviour. This paper presents a finite element study on the vibration, buckling and dynamic stability behaviour of a cracked cylindrical shell with fixed supports and subject to an in plane compressive/tensile periodic edge load. The effects of crack length and orientation are analysed. Under tension load, the results show that the frequency of the shell initially increases with the load, but then decreases as the load further increases leading to buckling due to tension load. The size and the orientation of the crack and the loading parameter can all have a significant effect on the dynamic stability behaviour of the shell...

    Abstract
A low gel content poly (styrene-ran-butadiene)/poly (methyl methacrylate) (SBR/PMMA) core/shell particles dispersed in a good solvent for the shell was wet spun into a coagulation bath at room temperature. The SEM micrographs of as spun fibers showed various surface topographies and fiber diameters, ranging from 4.2 up to 20 μm depend upon the draw ratio. The osmium tetroxide stained cross-section of fibers observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM), indicated a heterogeneous morphology consisting of dark cores and fairly light shells, which is a result of self-stratification to an overall core/shell morphology in fiber cross-section. The inner core consisted of higher concentration...

    Abstract
There are hundreds models of reticulated structures including the squared reticulated cylindrical shells. It is considered as comprising of a number of circumferential and longitudinal rods. Analytical governing equation for natural frequencies has been derived for this type of structures and to verify the validity of solutions, Finite Element Method (FEM) is used. The comparison of results demonstrate close agreement between analytical and FE solutions. Also a comparison is preformed between a reticulated and equivalent solid hollow cylinder shell. The equivalent solid hollow cylinder has equal weight, length and outer diameter with the squared reticulated cylindrical shell. This comparison...

    Abstract
In this study, the authors present an analytical approach to find the axisymmetric buckling load of two joined isotropic conical shells under axial compression. The problem of two joined conical shells may be considered as the generalized form of joined cylindrical and conical shells with constant or stepped thicknesses. Thickness of each cone is constant; however it may be different from the thickness of the other cone. The boundary conditions are assumed to be simply supported with rigid rings. The governing equations for the conical shells are obtained and solved with an analytical approach. A simple closed-form expression is obtained for the buckling load of two joined truncated conical...

    Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the free vibration of a rotating joined cylindrical-conical shell in the presence of the centrifugal and Coriolis forces as well as the initial hoop tension resulting from rotation of the shell. Based on the equations of general rotating shells of revolution, the equations of motion of rotating cylindrical and rotating conical shells are derived, and then these governing equations were solved by employing the power series method. For validation and comparison purposes, the results of the special cases of the studied problem were compared with the results reported in the literatures. Another comparison study was also conducted by the results of finite...

    , Article European Journal of Mechanics, A/Solids ; Volume 62 , 2017 , Pages 110-120 ; 09977538 (ISSN) Sarkheil, S ; Foumani, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, an improved formulation has been presented to study the vibrations of a truncated conical shell under rotating condition. This formulation considers the Coriolis and centrifugal forces and the initial hoop tension resulting from rotation. The conical shell discussed in this paper is the shell of revolution modeled by the Novoshilov theory. The equations which have been derived in the present paper differ from and are more complete than the equations in the existing papers published on the vibrations of conical shells under rotating condition. For validation, first, the solution method used in this paper was evaluated and then the conditions that highlight the difference...

Structural similitude in free vibration of orthogonally stiffened cylindrical shells

    , Article Thin-Walled Structures ; Volume 47, Issue 11 , 2009 , Pages 1316-1330 ; 02638231 (ISSN) Torkamani, Sh ; Navazi, H. M ; Jafari, A. A ; Bagheri, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, the necessary similarity conditions, or scaling laws, for free vibrations of orthogonally stiffened cylindrical shells are developed using the similitude theory. The Donnell-type nonlinear strain-displacement relations along with the smearing theory are used to model the structure. Then the principle of virtual work is used to analyze the free vibration of the stiffened shell. After non-dimensionalizing the derived formulations, the scaling laws are developed, using the similitude theory. Then, different examples are solved to validate the scaling laws numerically and experimentally. The obtained results show the effectiveness of the derived formulations. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd....

Dispute in photocatalytic and photoluminescence behavior in ZnO/graphene oxide core-shell nanoparticles

    , Article Materials Letters ; Volume 240 , 2019 , Pages 117-120 ; 0167577X (ISSN) Haghshenas, S. S. P ; Nemati, A ; Simchi, A ; Kim, C. U ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
ZnO/graphene oxide core-shell nanoparticles (ZGNPs) were prepared by via in-situ chemical synthesis and electrolysis. This report addresses the disagreement in the photocatalytic and photoluminescence behavior in this system. XRD, Raman, HRTEM, PL and UV–Vis were able to confirm ZnO nanoparticles and core-shell structures formation at various temperatures. A little shift was observed in Raman for ZGNPs after conjugating. PL showed a few peaks that were not related to the graphene, which depends on the synthesis route and defects. After conjugating between ZnO and Graphene, two mechanisms are suggested. The first is band structure modification in the boundary of core and shell. The second one...

    Abstract
Modern Latticed composite materials whose high specific strength and stiffness are utilized in spacecraft and rocket structures to a sufficiently high extent are now widely used in primary airframe structures. An analytical equation is derived for natural frequency of square latticed composite shells. The first fifth modes are taken to be compared. The analytical and FEM results are shown and compared to each other. Also, as discussed, the squared lattice cylinder shell reaches to their natural frequencies easily than the...

    Abstract
The elastic behavior of an edge dislocation placed in the shell of a free-standing core-shell nanowire is considered within the theory of surface/interface elasticity. Using the method of complex potential functions the expressions for the stress field of the dislocation, image forces on the dislocation, and the dislocation strain energy are derived and studied in detail. A special attention is paid to non-classical effects revealed within the surface/interface elasticity approach where a characteristic length parameter referred to as surface/interface modulus is introduced. These effects are (i) the stress oscillations along the shell surface and core-shell interface for negative values of...

    Abstract
We report high-efficiency CdTe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals synthesized in water by epitaxially growing CdS shells on aqueous CdTe cores at room temperature, enabled by the controlled release of S species under low-intensity ultraviolet (UV) light illumination. The resulting photo-induced dissociation of S2O32− ions conveniently triggers the formation of critical two-dimensional CdS epitaxy on the CdTe surface at room temperature, as opposed to initiating the growth of individual CdS core-only nanocrystals. This controlled colloidal hetero-epitaxy leads to a substantial increase in the photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) of the shelled nanocrystals in water...
