Investigation of the Performance of Microbial Fuel Cell Based on Shewanella Bacteria with the Aim of Nanostructured Materials
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Yaghmaei, Soheila (Supervisor) ; Sanaee, Zeinab (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
The development of clean, renewable and alternative sources of fossil fuels has increased in recent years due to various factors such as environmental pollution, reduced fossil fuel resources and increased energy consumption. The application of microbial fuel cells is one of the clean energy production methods using renewable sources such as municipal sewage. The microbial fuel cell converts the chemical energy stored in organic materials into electrical energy and simultaneously purifies the sewage. Increasing current density and power density are the most important challenges for microbial fuel cells. In this study, the two biocatalysts of Shewanella Oneidensis MR1 and Escherichia coli...
The Fabrication of the Coupled Microfluidic Microbial Electrochemical Cells for Oxalate Biodegradation
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Yaghmaei, Soheila (Supervisor) ; Mardanpour, Mohammad Mahdi (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
This study invewstigates the performance of a coupled microfluidic microbial fuel cell-microbial electrolysis cell producing biohydrogen in presence of shewanella oneidensis MR-1 from excreted oxalate of human metabolic processes. The effect of different parameters such as cell geometry including spiral and straight microchannels, precipitation of nano-particles on anode surface, substrate flowrate and the number of microfluidic microbial fuel cell supporting required power for microbial electrolysis cell were assessed. By anode modification, the maximum current density of 428 W m-3 was obtained which is less than 6-fold of the maximum power density in the cell fabricated by zinc foil. The...

Abstract
Bacterial transport parameters play a fundamental role in microbial population dynamics, biofilm formation and bacteria dispersion. In this study, the novel model was extended based on the capability of microsized microbial fuel cells (MFCs) as amperometric biosensors to predict the cells' chemotactic and bioelectrochemical properties. The model prediction results coincide with the experimental data of Shewanella oneidensis and chemotaxis mutant of P. aeruginosa bdlA and pilT strains, indicating the complementary role of numerical predictions for bioscreening applications of microsized MFCs. Considering the general mechanisms for electron transfer, substrate biodegradation, microbial growth...

Abstract
Environmental pollutions with heavy metals pose serious health and ecological risks. Sabzevar in the northeast of Iran has natural chromic mines and then chromium-polluted soils and groundwater. In the present work, the metal-tolerant bacterial strain KR2 was identified as Shewanella sp. following 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis. Bioremediation ability of isolated bacterial from agricultural soils that irrigated by groundwater, Shewanella sp., was evaluated for uptaking of chromium with varying Cr(VI) concentrations from 50 to 500 ppm in aerobic conditions (pH 7.0, 37 °C). The Shewanella sp. strain KR2 showed an obvious heavy metal tolerant in the wide range of heavy metals including: Cr6+,...
