    Abstract
The effect of mold hardness on the microstructure of ductile iron and the contraction porosity was investigated. Molds with different hardnesses (0.41, 0.48, 0.55, 0.62 MPa) and a sand mold prepared by Co2 method were used. The influence of silicon content on the induced expansion pressure owing to the formation of graphite was also investigated. The contraction during solidification can be compensated by an induced expansion owing to the graphite relief when the hardness of mold increases; therefore, the possibility of achieving a sound product without using any riser increases

Effect of Grain Refining, Cooling Rate and Modification on Shrinkage Porosities in A356 Aluminum Alloy

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hajizadeh Bidgoli, Ali (Author) ; Varahram, Naser (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, the influence of eutectic modification, grain refining and cooling rate on amount of shrinkage porosity in aluminium A356 alloy were investigated. Modification process for changing the morphology of eutectic silicon from needle like to fibrous like, use in aluminium – silicon alloys. This process often leads to increasing porosity in melt and affect harmfully on mechanical properties. For studying shrinkage porosity, the melt degassed completely to minimizing amount of gas in the melt. For modification, strontium in Al-10Sr master alloy and sodium in NaF salt used and for grain refining Al-10Ti and Al-5Ti-1B master alloys used. To study the effect of cooling rate, three mold...

Effective Factors on the Shrinkage Porosity Defect of Ductile Iron in Centrifugal Casting

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Maghsoudi, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Varahram, Naser (Supervisor) ; Davami, Parviz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The present work has been planned to elaborately investigate the key parameters which affect the formation of shrinkage porosities during centrifugal casting of ductile cast iron pipes. The porosity defects can be mostly found in the Hot Mould centrifugal casting products and adversely affect the final mechanical properties of ductile iron pipes namely Ultimate Tensile Strength and Elongation.
In the first point of view, the created defects were detected through microstructural observations and the corresponding responsible mechanisms were also discussed. The results showed that the inner porosity is produced because solidification occurs from both the inner and outer surfaces...
