, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yaghoubi, Amin (Author) ; Akbari, Javad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Hydrocephalus is a desease which causes by unnatural accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain ventricles. One of the most convenient ways to treat hydrocephalus disease is to use a brain shunt which consists of ventricular catheter, valve and distal catheter. Ventricular catheter obstruction is the main reason for shunt replacement in the human brain. This project attempts to remove obstruction of the ventricular catheter by mechanical forces. For this purpose, a magnet and a variable magnetic field suggested to apply mechanical force on a brush sliding on the shunt. On the inner surface of the ring-shaped magnet, brushes have been embedded and the magnet is placed on the outer...

    Abstract
This paper presents a newr control strategy for the shunt active filter in three-phase three-wire svstems with zero sequence voltages. An extended method based on instantaneous power theory in a rotating reference frame is developed for extracting the compensating signals for highlv/randomly varying loads. Since voltages at the point of common coupling contain low frequency interharmonics, conventional methods can not be used for dc voltage regulation. Therefore, a new method is introduced for this purpose. A three-phase electric arc furnace model is used to showT power quality improvement through reactive power and harmonic compensation by a shunt active fi'lter using the proposed method....

    Abstract
We propose an unprecedented transmit-array configuration which can mold the incident beam by modulating phase and amplitude wavefronts. The transmit-array is composed of patterned graphene metasurfaces as shunt admittance sheets. Thanks to the exceptional features of graphene such as tunability, thinness, low loss, and high confinement of graphene plasmons, the proposed subwavelength structure passes strict touchstones for nano-photonic and optoelectronic applications. Two flat-optics functionalities, i.e., focusing and splitting, are realized by means of the proposed configuration

    Abstract
This paper presents an investigation of power quality problems arising from electric arc furnace (EAF) operation, and the required compensating system capabilities. It also proposes a compensation system using a shunt active filter and a series inductor. A shunt active filter compensates for the reactive power and the current harmonics of the highly varying load. Reference signals for the compensation logic are obtained from the instantaneous current vector components on a rotating reference frame. Due to noninteger harmonics on voltages at the point of common coupling, conventional methods for the inverter dc bus voltage regulation fail to perform properly. Hence, a new method is introduced...

    Abstract
An assessment study of two different shunt FACTS devices for compensating disturbances due to voltage variation in power systems is presented in this paper. Namely, Static Compensator (STATCOM) and Static Var Compensator (SVC) are Considered in this study. Eigen Value analysis and nonlinear time domain simulations for starting motor, motor in load varying state and short circuit on motor terminals show that STATCOM DC Voltage regulation has a better performance Compared to that of SVC. The result that will be presented in the paper will prove the superiorly of STATCOM over SVC in increasing motor speeding up and improving system voltage profile particularly at starting. © 2005 IEEE

    Abstract
Electric networks often consist of remote cities or villages with low population densities, which consume a considerably small amount of energy. This can be in the order of a few megawatts for places that are up to 100 km away from the source. Typical uncompensated primary distribution lines are not an effective option for these situations, since line loadability drastically decreases as the line length is increased. Increasing the voltage level, on the other hand, is not cost effective. This paper investigates different reactive compensation techniques for increasing the loadability of these lines. Effect of series capacitors, shunt capacitors and voltage regulating transformers in such...

    Abstract
This paper presents an analytical model to design a class-E power amplifier under only zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) term with the MOSFET nonlinear drain-source shunt parasitic capacitance that is named as the subnominal operation. The presented analysis is performed under any grading coefficient m of MOSFET body junction diode and any duty ratio D. The grading coefficient m along with the switching duty ratio D are implemented as tuning variables to satisfy design specifications and ZVS term simultaneously. The restriction of selecting the value of m and D for the subnominal operation has a major effect on simultaneously satisfying of load-resistance, operating frequency, and junction...

    Abstract
By taking a new sight into the system dynamic equations, the controllers are designed based on the simplification and converting higher order dynamics to the first order systems. This issue not only simplifies controller design but also stabilize system in all operational points. Moreover, proposed controllers are applied to the parallel Active Power Filters (APFs) because of the new trends in modularizing of APFs. On the other hand, the IEEE-1459 standard has proposed new definitions for the power in unbalanced and non-sinusoidal conditions and it stimulated researchers to use this standard for controlling APF directly. However, the proposed definitions are based on RMS values and...

The new definitions have resulted in new methods of power quality enhancement technique. IEEE-1459 Std. proposes definitions for electric power in sinusoidal, nonsinusoidal, balanced and unbalanced conditions which can be used for compensation of nonsinusoidal and unbalanced systems. This reaserch introduces a new method to obtain shunt active filter reference signal. This...

Effect Analysis of Arrangement, Sequence and Plate Thickness of Spot Welding on Residual Stress and Fatigue Life of The Joint

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Minaei, Mohammad (Author) ; Farrahi, Gholamhosein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There are about 5,000 spot welds in the car body. Simulation of this number of spot welds to optimize the body of the car is practically impossible. In researches done in order to model and optimize the spot weld, standard spot weld sample with a nugget have been always used. Electrical current in spot welding process turns to heat according to the Ohm ratio, and causes the melting of the pieces and bonding. So amount of the electrical resistance, especially at the contact surface of the two pieces, is very important. In order to investigate the residual stresses induced in the connection of a three-sheet spot weld sample and its effect on fatigue life, first, a spot weld sample with...

    Abstract
Increase of nonlinear loads has led to the rise of harmonic currents, voltage distortion and imbalance in power systems. IEEE Std. 1459 proposes new definitions for electric power in sinusoidal, nonsinusoidal, balanced and unbalanced conditions which can be used for compensation of nonsinusoidal and unbalanced systems. Among different definitions, IEEE Std. 1459 proposes the new concept of effective apparent power and power factor which is more related to the real losses in a power system. In this paper, by expansion of definitions of IEEE Std. 1459, instantaneous forms of effective parameters are defined. Then, a new control strategy for a Shunt Active Power Filters (SAPFs) is defined based...

    Abstract
Frequency shift of the spectrum of an incident optical pulse by an intense THz pulse inducing cross-phase modulation (XPM) in a nonlinear dielectric slab is analyzed. The effect is predicted with a high degree of accuracy using the well-known transmission line matrix (TLM) technique. In this research, to model the THz-induced temporal and spatial variation of the dielectric permittivity of the nonlinear dielectric slab, the transmission lines of the TLM method are loaded with open shunt stubs. The parameters of the stubs are modified in accordance with the refractive index variation of the dielectric slab, here ZnTe, induced by the strong THz pulse. The obtained numerical results are...

    Abstract
This paper gives the design and analysis approaches for the class-E power amplifier with a shunt inductor under the nominal conditions, i.e., zero-current switching (ZCS) and zero-current derivative switching (ZCDS), with taking into account the MOSFET nonlinear output parasitic capacitance at any duty ratio. Although, the class-E ZCS/ZCDS conditions obtained high-efficiency, but the switch-current waveform affected by the slope of the voltage across the MOSFET nonlinear drain-to-source parasitic capacitance during the switch-off state, which restricted the operating frequency. On the other hand, the duty ratio is an adjustment parameter to obtain high-frequency operation. Therefore, the...

    Abstract
Organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells have attracted considerable interest due to their high efficiency and low fabrication cost. Au and Ag are usually used as the back contact metals but have limitations such as Au is too expensive and Ag is unstable. Here, Pt, Au, Ni, Cu, Cr and Ag were studied as the back contact electrodes for perovskite solar cells. We looked at how the work function of metals can affect their photovoltaic characteristics. The compositional and electrical characterizations were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The general trend observed was that the shunt resistance and open-circuit voltage...

    Abstract
Reactive power dispatch in power systems is a complex combinatorial optimization problem involving nonlinear functions with multiple local minima and nonlinear constraints. In an open electricity market reactive power support is an ancillary service for real power transportation. From the viewpoint of ISO, this paper provides a dispatching reactive power model, based on optimal power flow, by which both the cost of procuring reactive power as auxiliary service and the losses of active power are minimized. In this paper the cost of reactive power support consists of two components: reactive power cost of generators and shunt capacitors. In addition an extremely powerful differential evolution...

    Abstract
This paper discusses the application of unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) for improving power quality of a system supplying an electric arc furnace (EAF). The UPQC includes combined series and shunt active filters sharing a common DC link. It is used to mitigate voltage disturbances and compensate for reactive power, harmonics and interharmonics. A novel control strategy for the UPQC is presented. As voltages at the point of common coupling contain low-frequency interharmonics, conventional methods cannot be used for extracting voltage reference signals. In the proposed method, voltage references are extracted using a phase-locked loop to generate sinusoidal waveforms. Current...
