    Abstract
Presented within this paper is the identification of impact force acting on a simply supported beam. The force identification is an inverse problem in which the measured response of the structure is used to determine the applied force. The identification problem is formulated as an optimization problem and genetic algorithm is utilized to solve the optimization problem. The objective function is calculated on the difference between analytical and measured responses and the decision variables are the location and magnitude of the applied force. The results from simulation show the effectiveness of the approach and its robustness to the measurement noise and sensor location

    Abstract
This paper develops a trend line-based algorithm for signal decomposition in which the adjusted Savitzky–Golay filter is utilized to initiate the decomposition process. In this line, the proposed algorithm determines some special trend lines, mainly composed of the natural frequency of a bridge. An easy-to-implement algorithm is then provided to formulate this process and to decompose the given signal into its components in a systematic way. Additionally, a residual signal is generated by the proposed algorithm to store the detected noise and to reconstruct the original signal. To verify the proposed algorithm in the field of bridge health monitoring, a set of numerical and experimental...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jafari, Ali (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor) ; Navayi Neya, Bahram (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The importance of transversely isotropic and functionally graded materials and also plates in industry necessitates studies on these kinds of structures. This study works on the buckling of simply supported rectangular transversely isotropic FGM plates subjected to in-plane uniaxial or biaxial static loads. For this purpose, discretization method is applied and the aforesaid inhomogeneous plate is divided into arbitrary number of sublayers parametrically (N). With the help of displacement potential functions, coupled different equations for each sublayer are simplified to two uncoupled different equations in terms of the potential functions. These governing equations for transversely...

    , Article Journal of Vibration and Acoustics, Transactions of the ASME ; Vol. 136, issue. 5 , Jul , 2014 Firouz-Abadi, R. D ; Rahmanian, M ; Amabili, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The present study considers the free vibration analysis of moderately thick conical shells based on the Novozhilov theory. The higher order governing equations of motion and the associate boundary conditions are obtained for the first time. Using the Frobenius method, exact base solutions are obtained in the form of power series via general recursive relations which can be applied for any arbitrary boundary conditions. The obtained results are compared with the literature and very good agreement (up to 4%) is achieved. A comprehensive parametric study is performed to provide an insight into the variation of the natural frequencies with respect to thickness, semivertex angle, circumferential...

    Abstract
The buckling analysis of cross-ply laminated conical shell panels with simply supported boundary conditions at all edges and subjected to axial compression is studied. The conical shell panel is a very interesting problem as it can be considered as the general case for conical shells when the subtended angle is set to 2π and also cylindrical panels and shells when the semi-vertex angle is equal to zero. Equations were derived using classical shell theory of Donnell type and solved using generalized differential quadrature method. The results are compared and validated with the known results in the literature. The effects of subtended angle, semi-vertex angle, length, thickness and radius of...

    , Article Proceedings of the ASME Design Engineering Technical Conference ; Volume 5 , 2012 , Pages 67-73 ; 9780791845042 (ISBN) Tajalli, S. A ; Kahrobaiyan, M. H ; Rahaeifard, M ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Akbari, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In this paper, a size-dependent formulation is developed for Timoshenko beams made of functionally graded materials (FGM). The developed formulation is based on the strain gradient theory;a non-classical continuum theory able to capture the size-effect in micro-scaled structures. Considering the material length scale parameters of the FG beams vary through the thickness, the new equivalent length scale parameters are proposed as functions of the constituents' length scale parameters to describe the size-dependent static and dynamic behavior of FG microbeams. The governing differential equations of equilibrium and both classical and nonclassical sets of boundary conditions are derived for the...

    , Article ASME 2011 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, IMECE 2011 ; Volume 8 , 2011 , Pages 583-590 ; 9780791854945 (ISBN) Nabian, M ; Ahmadian, M. T ; ASME ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, two physical properties of simply supported hollow cylinders made of functionally graded materials are investigated. These two properties are mass and first natural frequency which is desirable to be minimized and maximized respectively in mechanical applications. The functionally graded material properties are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness of the cylinder. In this multi-objective optimization problem the first natural frequency of the FGM cylinders as well as its mass are formulated in terms of the volume fraction of the constituents, then by using Genetic algorithm optimization method the continuous volume fraction function of the constituents has been...

Nonlinear vibration of beams under nonideal boundary conditions

    , Article Acta Mechanica ; Volume 218, Issue 3-4 , 2011 , Pages 259-267 ; 00015970 (ISSN) Kamali Eigoli, A ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we investigate the influence of nonideal boundary conditions on the nonlinear vibration of damped Euler-Bernoulli beams subjected to harmonic loads. These nonidealities allow for small deflections and/or moments at the supports of the beam. Using the iteration perturbation method, analytical expressions for the case of simply supported beams with immovable end conditions are provided. The results reveal that the first order of approximation obtained by the proposed method is more accurate than the perturbation solutions. Moreover, compared with the previous studies, some interesting phenomenon is predicted. We have shown that in some special combinations of the nonidealities...

    Abstract
In this paper, a thorough investigation of response of a composite Timoshenko simply-supported beam with actuating layers, under the motion of a partially distributed mass is studied and a control system based on the feedback of beam's deflection velocity is applied to alleviate and suppress the vibration of the beam in either case when the mass is still traveling on the beam or departed the beam. The actuating layers are made up of Terfenol-D smart material which are sensitive to magnetic field (magnetostrictive materials) and this trait makes them very suitable to be used for vibration control. They introduce damping to the system through which the energy of system dissipates. The response...

    , Article Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology ; Volume 26, Issue 2 , 2012 , Pages 563-573 ; 1738494X (ISSN) Firouz Abadi, R. D ; Fotouhi, M. M ; Permoon, M. R ; Haddadpour, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The small-scale effect on the natural frequencies and buckling of pressurized nanotubes is investigated in this study. Based on the firstorder shear deformable shell theory, the nonlocal theory of elasticity is used to account for the small-scale effect and the governing equations of motion are obtained. Applying modal analysis technique and based on Galerkin's method a procedure is proposed to obtain natural frequencies of vibrations. For the case of nanotubes with simply supported boundary conditions, explicit expressions are obtained which establish the dependency of the natural frequencies and buckling loads of the nanotube on the small-scale parameter and natural frequencies obtained by...

    Abstract
The governing differential equation of motion of a thin rectangular plate excited by a moving mass is considered. The moving mass is traversing on the plate's surface at arbitrary trajectories. Abstract
In this paper, simple analytical expressions are presented for geometrically non-linear vibration analysis of thin nanobeams with both simply supported and clamped boundary conditions. Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity together with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is used to obtain the governing equations of motions of the nanobeam with surface effects consideration. The governing nonlinear partial differential equation is reduced to a single nonlinear ordinary differential equation using Galerkin technique. He's variational approach is employed to obtain analytical solution for the resulted nonlinear governing equation. The effects of different parameters such as vibration amplitude, boundary...

Free vibration of generally laminated plates with various shapes

    , Article Polymer Composites ; Volume 32, Issue 3 , FEB , 2011 , Pages 445-454 ; 02728397 (ISSN) Yousefi, P ; Kargarnovin, M. H ; Hosseini Hashemi, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This article is focused on a simple approach for determining the natural frequency and mode shape of laminated angle-ply plates with various shapes by rectangular orthotropy. Since the boundary of the domain for all shapes are not natural to the material coordinate axes it seems appropriate to express the plate displacement amplitude in terms of a polynomial and a general shape function multiplication in the x and y coordinates. The boundary conditions considered are clamped and simply supported edges. The effect of the fiber orientation, layer number, and lamination sequence on the natural frequencies of plates is also considered. The natural frequency determinant has been generated using...

    Abstract
Dynamic analysis of nanotube structures under excitation of a moving nanoparticle is carried out using nonlocal continuum theory of Eringen. To this end, the nanotube structure is modeled by an equivalent continuum structure (ECS) according to the nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli, Timoshenko and higher order beam theories. The nondimensional equations of motion of the nonlocal beams acted upon by a moving nanoparticle are then established. Analytical solutions of the problem are presented for simply supported boundary conditions. The explicit expressions of the critical velocities of the nonlocal beams are derived. Furthermore, the capabilities of various nonlocal beam models in predicting the...

    Abstract
Analytical and molecular dynamics simulation approaches are used in this paper to study free-vibration behavior of multilayer graphene-based nanoresonators considering interlayer shear effect. According to experimental observations, the weak interlayer van der Waals interaction cannot maintain the integrity of carbon atoms in the adjacent layers. Hence, it is vital that the interlayer shear effect is taken into account to design and analyze multilayer graphene-based nanoresonators. The differential equation of motion and the general form of boundary conditions are first derived for multilayer graphene sheets with rectangular shape using the Hamilton’s principle. Then, by pursuing an...

    Abstract
Based on classical plate theory (CLPT), free vibration analysis of a circular plate composed of functionally graded material (FGM) with its upper and lower surfaces bounded by two piezoelectric layers was performed. Assuming that the material properties vary in a power law manner within the thickness of the plate the governing differential equations are derived. The distribution of electric potential along the thickness direction in piezoelectric layers is considered to vary quadratically such that the Maxwell static electricity equation is satisfied. Then these equations are solved analytically for two different boundary conditions, namely clamped and simply supported edges. The validity of...
