Abstract
The effect of combined electromagnetic-ultrasonic fields evaluated on grain refinement. Cavitation induced by the combination of technologies suggested as major mechanism for grain refinement. A numerical simulation performed predicting the cavitation regions in the molten AA5754 aluminum alloy. It was concluded that the cavitation phenomenon occurs near the electromagnetic and ultrasonic sources. The observed acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic horn is more intensive than the electromagnetic one. The ultrasonic streaming could transport small bubbles into the bulk rapidly. These micro-bubbles collapsed due to acoustic vibrations where the resulting micro-jets were strong enough to...

Abstract
An integrated fuzzy logic-neural network methodology is presented as a mean to improve the reconstruction of the performance map of axial compressors and fans. The learning capability of artificial neural network technique is integrated to the knowledge aspect of fuzzy inference system to offer enhanced prediction capabilities compared to using a single methodology independently. The proposed technique incorporates information of experimental data on surge, operating, and choke lines at any arbitrary but fixed rotational speed. A comparison of the predicted results with experimental data reveals a very good agreement. The proposed technique has the capability to model the nonlinear surge...

Abstract
In this research, multi-level optimization of the profile of the splitter blades of a turbocharger compressor is performed using genetic algorithm in order to improve its performance. Successive corrections of the profile at hub, mid-span, and shroud of the splitter blades, with the objective of decreasing the incidence losses at the leading edge and adjustment of the blade loading at the shroud, result in an impeller having improved splitter blades. The impeller flow field analysis shows that the optimization has been successful in reducing the flow leakage at the shroud region as well as the losses in the leading edge region. Although numerical simulations predict a decrease by 0.5% in...
Predicting hourly air pollutant levels using artificial neural networks coupled with uncertainty analysis by Monte Carlo simulations

Abstract
Recent progress in developing artificial neural network (ANN) metamodels has paved the way for reliable use of these models in the prediction of air pollutant concentrations in urban atmosphere. However, improvement of prediction performance, proper selection of input parameters and model architecture, and quantification of model uncertainties remain key challenges to their practical use. This study has three main objectives: to select an ensemble of input parameters for ANN metamodels consisting of meteorological variables that are predictable by conventional weather forecast models and variables that properly describe the complex nature of pollutant source conditions in a major city, to...
