    , Article Applied Mechanics and Materials ; Vol. 527 , 2014 , Pages 146-151 ; ISSN: 16609336 Ganjiazad, R ; Kazemipour, A ; Afshin, H ; Farhanieh, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, the influence of volumetric flow rate and inclination angle of air jet is evaluated on the performance of a Saccardo ventilation system in a straight rectangular tunnel in case of fire. Simultaneous effects of volumetric flow rate and inclination angle of jet exiting the Saccardo nozzle on the behavior of smoke plume is considered by studying the structure of velocity profile before the fire source. It is found that this factor has a remarkable influence on the behavior of smoke plume and therefore, on the temperatures experienced near the fire. Besides, the influence of tunnel slope on the performance of the Saccardo system to sweep the plume is investigated. It is shown that...

Notch-texture strengthening mechanism in commercially pure titanium thin sheets

    , Article Materials and Design ; Vol. 55, issue , March , 2014 , p. 683-689 Nasiri-Abarbekoh, H ; Abbasi, R ; Ekrami, A ; Ziaei-Moayyed, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Simultaneous effects of notch and texture on strengthening mechanisms of rolled thin sheets of commercially pure titanium were investigated. The presence of notch led to the restriction of deformation systems and different fracture behaviors compared to un-notched specimens. The loss of material's ability to accommodate plastic deformation at the notch tip with increase in rolling reductions changed the notch strengthening phenomenon to the notch weakening one. At medium levels of deformation, due to the simultaneous development of a triaxial stress state and strong basal texture at the notch tip, a new strengthening mechanism which is called "notch-texture strengthening mechanism" led to a...

    Abstract
This study provides a stability analysis of flexible rotating pipes taking into account the simultaneous effects of internal and external fluid loading. Using the Euler-Bernoulli beam assumptions, governing equations for flexural vibrations of rotating pipes are obtained. The internal flow characteristics and the double gyroscopic effect are taken into account when deriving the structural equations coupled with the internal flow. External fluid loading is determined by a special linearization of the Navier-Stokes equations. Considering the circular wall of the pipe as an impermeable boundary to the flow, fluid-induced forcing functions are obtained and then applied to the structural...

    Nanofluidic transport inside carbon nanotubes

    , Article Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics ; Volume 47, Issue 6 , 12 February , 2014 ; ISSN: 00223727 Moghimi Kheirabadi, A ; Moosavi, A ; Akbarzadeh, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the effects of nanotube size, mean flow velocity, ion concentration and temperature of an electrolyte water solution on shearing stress and nominal viscosity. It is shown that the distributed electric field arising from the electrolyte water solution has significant influences on fluid properties. Also, the temperature of the solution, which causes thermal movement, affects nanofluidic transport in nanoenvironments. The nominal viscosity and shearing stress increases as the tube diameter increases. When the temperature of solution increases or ion concentration decreases, the shearing stress and nominal viscosity increase....

    Abstract
This article investigates the simultaneous effect of extrusion ratio and T6 heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of in-situ Al-15wt.%Mg2Si composite. his composite has already been introduced as a new class of light materials but the brittle structure of the primary Mg2Si which is formed during solidification limits its application. As-cast composite was directly extruded as rod by using three different dies. After T6 heat treatment on extruded samples, microstructure was studied by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Results demonstrated that extruded and heat treated composite possesses considerably higher strength and enhanced ductility in comparison with the...

Experimental investigation of the effect of solar collecting area on the performance of active solar stills with different brine depths

    , Article Desalination ; Volume 358 , 2015 , Pages 76-83 ; 00119164 (ISSN) Taghvaei, H ; Taghvaei, H ; Jafarpur, K ; Feilizadeh, M ; Karimi Estahbanati, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Solar collecting area is one of the most important operating parameters of active solar stills. No experimental work has been performed to investigate the effect of this parameter to date. Furthermore in all of previous theoretical studies the effect of solar collecting area was examined during only the first 24-hour period of the operation of stills with one specified brine depth. However the present work experimentally studies the long-term simultaneous effects of collector area and brine depth on the performance of active solar stills. For this purpose four parallel active solar stills with different collector areas were fabricated and experiments were conducted for 5 consecutive days...

    Abstract
The state of solids mixing can be considered as a key factor in accomplishment of high efficiency and a uniform product in gas-solid fluidized-beds operating with several different particle sizes. In the present work, coupled DEM-CFD approach was used to carefully investigate the mixing process of binary particles in flat-bottom spouted beds. In this regard, simultaneous effects of particle specifications, operating conditions, and bed dimensions on the equilibrium mixing state of solid mixture were evaluated in detail. Moreover, taking into account the contribution of various parameters, the obtained simulation results were used to draw a correlation for predicting the equilibrium mixing...

    Abstract
For modeling the electromechanical behavior of nano-bridge structures with slender narrow-width beam elements, not only the simultaneous effects of surface layer and size dependency should be taken into account but also corrected force models should be considered. In this paper, the instability of a narrow-width nano-bridge is studied based on strain gradient theory and Gurtin–Murdoch surface elasticity. The mid-plane stretching is incorporated in the governing equation as well as corrected force distribution. Using Rayleigh–Ritz method, a parametric analysis is conducted to examine the impacts of surface layer, size dependence, dispersion forces and structural damping on static and dynamic...

    Abstract
With the development of Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) technologies in recent years, several studies suggest using them as an alternative for SRAMs in on-chip caches. One of the main challenges in replacing SRAMs with NVMs is limited endurance of NVMs (i.e. the maximum allowed number of write operations in an NVM cell). The endurance of NVM caches is directly affected not only by workload behaviors, but also by process variations (PVs). Several studies characterized the endurance of NVM caches but they do not consider the simultaneous effects of the PVs and the workloads. In this paper, we propose a high-level framework to investigate the endurance of NVM caches affected by the per-cell endurance...

    Abstract
Human error is one of the leading causes of accidents. Distraction, fatigue, poor visibility, speeding, and other such errors made by drivers can cause accidents. With the rapid advancements in automation technologies, transportation planners have strived to use Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to minimize human error. In this study, the effect of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) on the number of potential conflicts at two unsignalized intersections is investigated by using a microsimulation model in PTV Vissim software. For human-driven cars, the factor that is considered for calibration is driver distraction mainly caused by reading or writing text messages on a cellphone while driving....

Tribological characteristics of self-lubricating nanostructured aluminum reinforced with multi-wall CNTs processed by flake powder metallurgy and hot pressing method

    , Article Diamond and Related Materials ; Volume 90 , 2018 , Pages 93-100 ; 09259635 (ISSN) Akbarpour, M. R ; Alipour, S ; Najafi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
Ultrafine-grained Al-CNT (2 and 4 vol%) composites were successfully fabricated using the flake powder metallurgy and hot pressing route, and the microstructure and tribological properties of the produced composites were studied. The results showed that the coefficient of friction and the wear rate of Al decrease with the addition of the CNT reinforcement. A carbon-rich film formed on the worn surfaces during wear test, which prevented the Al oxidation and yielded the self-lubricating effect for the composites. This improvement in the wear behavior of the composites can be attributed to the simultaneous effects of the ultrafine-grained matrix and strengthening and self-lubricating properties...

    Abstract
The simultaneous effect of electrospun scaffold alignment and polymer composition on chondrogenic differentiation of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMMSC) is investigated. Aligned and randomly oriented polycaprolactone/poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) hybrid electrospun scaffolds with two different ratios are fabricated by electrospinning. It is found that aligned nanofibrous scaffolds support higher chondrogenic differentiation of hBMMSCs compared to random ones. The aligned scaffolds show a higher expression level of chondrogenic markers such as type II collagen and aggrecan. It is concluded that the aligned nanofibrous scaffold with higher PLGA ratio could significantly...

    Abstract
One of the major challenges in the manufacturing parts, especially metals, is turning with good/excellent surface quality, which has a significant effect on the fatigue strength of the industrial components. Selecting incorrect or unsuitable values of machining parameters leads to vibration instability in the cutting tool and as a result, excessive roughness is created on the product’s surface. Therefore, one of the ways to reduce the roughness factor and increase the product fatigue life is to control the relative slip and vibration between the cutting tool and the workpiece. To achieve this goal, the authors attempted to investigate the simultaneous effects of tool overhang and cutting...
