, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tahmasebian Dehkordi, Sepehr (Author) ; Borghei, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Moslehi Moslehabadi, Parivash (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of ultrasound waves on sludge reduction in MBBR bioreactor for industrial wastewater. The experiments were performed using two identical 20L MBBR bioreactor under same operational conditions. In MBBR with return sludge, sludge was collected from clarifier and after being sonicated, returned to the system by pump.
For determining optimum intensity and time duration of ultrasound, 0.3lit of MBBR sludge was sonicated with intensities of 20, 30, 60, 120, 150, 250 w/cm2 and time duration of 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 min. Afterward, these two parameters were optimized with Energy Efficiency Index. As the results shown, intensity of 120...

Performance of Activated Sludge System at Different Weather and Solution for Upgrading

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hazrati, Hossein (Author) ; Shaygan Salek, Jalaloddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Over 90 percent of the wastewater treatment systems use activated sludge which, yields to increase in organic loadings, these systems do not have appropriate performance. For upgrading of these systems a UASB reactor has been used prior to the activated sludge system, to improve the system performance and also reduce the excess sludge production. A membrane was also used instead of the sedimentation tank, to betterment the effluent quality. COD influent concentration was about 600 to 2400 mg/l, up to 98 percent of COD reduction obtain in this system. Also excess sludge reduction was over 90%. Such a system upgrading will increase treatment capacity by factor of 5. As it was shown, for UASBR,...

    Abstract
Sludge handling is a common issue in all biological wastewater treatment methods. In this study, sonication technique as a state-of-the-art technology has been applied to a continuous MBBR system with the aim of sludge reduction. A novel configuration of MBBR with an additional recycle stream of sonicated sludge was used as the experimental setup. Based on exposed energy and sludge disruption performance, optimized sonication density and exposure time were obtained 1.5 W/mL and 15 min, respectively. This condition provided 42.2% increase in soluble COD as a result of sludge disintegration. Our results revealed that the performance of MBBR and excess sludge reduction were affected by...

    Abstract
Most of 200 Activated Sludge Plant in Iran are overloaded and as a result, their efficiency is low. In this work, a pilot plant is manufactured and put into operation in one of the wastewater treatment plants in the west of Tehran. Instead of conventional activated sludge, a membrane bioreactor and an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor used as a pretreatment unit in this pilot. For the sake of data accuracy and precision, an enriched municipal wastewater was opted as an influent to the pilot. Based on the attained result, the optimum retention time in this system was 4. h, and the overall COD removal efficiency was 98%. As a whole, the application of this retrofit would increase the...
