    Artificial emotions for artificial systems

    , Article 2008 AAAI Spring Symposium, Stanford, CA, 26 March 2008 through 28 March 2008 ; Volume SS-08-04 , 2008 , Pages 46-49 ; 9781577353607 (ISBN) Harati Zadeh, S ; Bagheri Shouraki, S ; Halavati, R ; Sharif University of Technology
To produce emotional artificial systems in AI domain, usually a subset of human emotional states are imported to the target domain and the major differences between natural and artificial domains are often ignored. In this paper we will discuss about why such an approach is not useful for all possible applications of emotions and we will show how it is necessary and possible to produce artificial emotion systems based on the target systems goals, abilities and needs

Finding feasible timetables with particle swarm optimization

, Article Innovations'07: 4th International Conference on Innovations in Information Technology, IIT, Dubai, 18 November 2007 through 20 November 2007 ; 2007 , Pages 387-391 ; 9781424418411 (ISBN) Qarouni Fard, D ; Najafi Ardabifi, A ; Moeinzadeh, M. A Timetabling problem is usually defined as assigning a set of events to a number of rooms and timeslots such that they satisfy a number of constraints. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a stochastic, population-based computer problem-solving algorithm; it is a kind of swarm intelligence that is based on social-psychological principles and provides insights into social behavior, as well as contributing to engineering applications. This paper applies the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm to the classic Timetabling problem. This is inspired by similar attempts belonging to the evolutionary paradigm in which the metaheuristic involved is tweaked to suit the grouping nature of problems...

The sources of stigma and the impacts on Afghan refugees with substance abuse disorders: A qualitative study in Iran

    , Article Journal of Ethnicity in Substance Abuse ; Volume 19, Issue 4 , 2020 , Pages 610-622 Deilamizade, A ; Moghanibashi Mansourieh, A ; Mohammadian, A ; Puyan, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    Routledge  2020
Iran is the fourth refugee-hosting country and Afghanistan is the second refugee-source country in the world. This research is qualitative and conducted with content analysis method. Twenty-seven individuals participated in the study. They were recruited from two midterm residential drug treatment centers in Tehran. Afghan refugees who use drugs felt and experienced stigma in five areas: family, friends, workplace, neighborhood, and treatment center. The consequences include frequent treatment failure, family relationship disruption, superficial conformity with the host society, and self-stigma. It is necessary to design interventions to reduce stigma and discrimination attached to refugees....

Sustainable transport indicators: Definition and integration

    , Article International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology ; Volume 2, Issue 1 , 2005 , Pages 83-96 ; 17351472 (ISSN) Rassafi, A. A ; Vaziri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    CEERS  2005
In this paper, a different interpretation of sustainable transportation, is introduced, in which sustainability with respect to transportation sector for the selected countries is evaluated. This interpretation characterizes "sustainable development" through "harmonic development". It means sustainable development with special focus on transportation can be measured by the degree of conformity between environment, economy, and social aspects on one hand, and transportation on the other hand. The best indicator to perform such a measurement is elasticity. The database used for the study encompasses a series of national indicators for each country Seventy nine countries were initially selected...

Analysis of complex gamma-ray spectra using particle swarm optimization

, Article Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment ; Volume 911 , 2018 , Pages 123-130 ; 01689002 (ISSN) Shahabinejad, H ; Vosoughi, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2018
Analysis of gamma-ray spectra is an important step for identification and quantification of radionuclides in a sample. In this paper a new gamma-ray spectra analysis algorithm based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is developed to identify different isotopes of a mixed gamma-ray source and determine their fractional abundances. PSO is an iterative algorithm that imitates the social behaviors observed in nature to solve complex optimization problems. The PSO method is used for complex fitting to the response of a 3 [Formula presented] 3 inch NaI (Tl) scintillation detector and the fitting process is controlled by a test for significance of abundance and computation of Theil coefficient....

Distribution system efficiency improvement by reconfiguration and capacitor placement using a modified particle swarm optimization algorithm

, Article EPEC 2010 - IEEE Electrical Power and Energy Conference: "Sustainable Energy for an Intelligent Grid", 25 August 2010 through 27 August 2010 ; August , 2010 ; 9781424481880 (ISBN) Rezaei, P ; Vakilian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Capacitor placement/setting is one of the main means for loss reduction and voltage profile improvement in distribution systems. If capacitor placement is meant, the objective function will be the cost of energy losses besides the capacitors costs in a specified period of time. Here, reconfiguration can be used as a strategy to reform the base configuration of the distribution network in order to place the capacitors more efficiently with lower costs. On the other hand, if capacitors are already available in a network, optimum capacitors setting and network reconfiguration should be performed for power loss minimization. In this paper both power loss minimization and capacitor placement cost...
