    Abstract
A suction-controlled ring device has been developed to continuously measure the coefficient of lateral soil pressure in deformable unsaturated soil samples from the at-rest to the active condition under application of increasing vertical pressure and controlled matric suction. The device incorporates a thin aluminum specimen ring equipped with horizontal strain gages for recording the lateral soil strains. In addition, a sensor recording water volume changes is utilized to continuously monitor the degree of saturation of the soil sample during tests. The matric suction within the soil texture is controlled using the axis translation technique. In order to verify the performance of the ring...

Study of the behavior of pile groups during lateral spreading in medium dense sands by large scale shake table test

    , Article International Journal of Civil Engineering ; Vol. 12, Issue. 3 , 2014 , pp. 374-391 ; ISSN: 17350522 Kavand, A ; Haeri, S. M ; Asefzadeh, A ; Rahmani, I ; Ghalandarzadeh, A ; Bakhshi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, different aspects of the behavior of 2×2 pile groups under liquefaction-induced lateral spreading in a 3-layer soil profile is investigated using large scale 1g shake table test. Different parameters of the response of soil and piles including time-histories of accelerations, pore water pressures, displacements and bending moments are presented and discussed in the paper. In addition, distribution of lateral forces due to lateral spreading on individual piles of the groups is investigated in detail. The results show that total lateral forces on the piles are influenced by the shadow effect as well as the superstructure mass attached to the pile cap. It was also found that...

A new approach for estimating the seismic soil pressure on retaining walls

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 17, Issue 4 A , Aug , 2010 , Pages 273-284 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Maleki, S ; Mahjoubi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a simple finite element model for seismic analysis of retaining walls is introduced. The model incorporates nonlinearity in the behavior of near wall soil, wall flexibility and elastic free field soil response. This model can be employed in nonlinear modeling of retaining walls and bridge abutments. The advantages of this model are simplicity and flexibility in addition to acceptable precision. Using this finite element model, an analytical study is conducted on several soil-wall systems using nonlinear time-history analysis by applying real earthquake records. Based on the results of these analyses, new seismic soil pressure distributions are proposed for different soil and...

Physical Modeling of Group Pile Response to Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Spreading by Shaking Table Tests

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asefzadeh, Arian (Author) ; Haeri, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent earthquakes piles have been severely damaged due to liquefaction-induced lateral spreading. Liquefaction causes lateral spreading in gently sloped saturated soft granular soils, leading to significant damage in structures and deep foundations. Although in recent years many studies have focused on different aspects of this phenomenon, the complex nature of the dynamic interaction between piles and liquefied soil is not yet fully understood. Thus more studies in this regard is inevitable. The present research focuses on the discussion and analysis of two large scale shaking table tests of 2x2 and 3x3 group piles. A three layer soil profile was used for the model, consisting of one...

E ectiveness of a vertical micropile system in mitigating the liquefaction-induced lateral spreading e ects on pile foundations: 1 g large-scale shake table tests

    Abstract
Liquefaction-induced lateral spreading caused severe damages to pile foundations during past earthquakes. Micropiles can be used as a mitigation strategy against lateral spreading e ects on pile foundations. However, the available knowledge about the possible efficiency of this strategy is quite limited. In this regard, the present study aims to evaluate the e ectiveness of a vertical micropile system as a lateral spreading countermeasure using large-scale 1 g shake table tests on 3 x 3 pile groups. The results showed that the micropile system was not able to e ectively reduce the bending moments in piles; however, it considerably reduced the lateral soil pressures exerted on the upslope...

Response of a group of piles to liquefaction-induced lateral spreading by large scale shake table testing

    Abstract
Liquefaction-induced lateral spreading has imposed severe damages to many important structures supported on pile foundations during past earthquakes. As a result, evaluation of pile response to lateral spreading is an important step towards safe and resistant design of pile foundations against this destructive phenomenon. Current paper aims to study the response of a group of piles subjected to liquefaction-induced lateral spreading using a large scale 1-g shake table test. General test results including time-histories of accelerations, pore water pressures, displacements and bending moments are presented and discussed in this paper. In addition, distribution of lateral soil pressure on...

    Abstract
Surface waves generated during vibration of machine foundations are sometimes troublemaking and cause some damages to the nearby sensitive structures or people. Considering the function of the machines located on the foundations the dynamic loading could be harmonic or impact type. The main part of the generated energy is transferred to the ground by Rayleigh surface waves. One of the most reliable and economic methods for reduction of the effects of these generated waves is using open trenches around the dynamic sources, so called active isolation in literature. In this paper applicability and affecting parameters of the open trenches around the impact dynamic source is studied using...
