    Abstract
A heat transfer rate was determined for polypropylene tubes in solar water heaters for the Reynolds number range 800-5600. Experiments were conducted in ambient temperatures of 34 to 37°C. Data were correlated in the form of Nusselt numbers as: Nu=0.0015 Re0.75 Pr1/3 with correlation coefficient of 0.95. Such data can be used to predict heat transfer rates in a polypropylene solar heater in Tehran where the experiments were performed. An application of the results is shown in an example. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Abstract
Nowadays, radical increase in energy consumption guides humankind to find and harvest some alternative energy resources. Between the energy resources that have ever been known, Solar Energy is the most traditional one and Solar Water Heaters (SWHs) are the most ancient tools that have been used to store this energy up to now. Regarding this issue, many researches have been done to investigate different aspects of SWHs and the most conventional type was Thermosyphon SWH system. In this study, our aim is to investigate the influence of Pulsating Heat Pipes (PHPs) application as a heat transfer tool to convey absorbed solar energy to hot water reservoir of a SWH. In order to do this research,...

    Abstract
Limitations of fossil energy resources and environmental factors such as gas emission and global warming, forces human being to tend to apply renewable energies especially solar energy resource. Iran, which is located in yellow belt of the earth, has a high potential to be benefited from solar energy. Since more than 40 percent of energy resources are consumed in the building section, using solar energy I buildings can help the country to reduce the energy consumption. Space Cooling and heating and water heating are some examples of solar energy applications in buildings. Because, there are various types of climates in the world, there is not a unified code and guideline to design and...

Political-cultural-social issues, economic issues, financial support, geographic location, infrastructure, and interactions were assessed as the independent variables of the study. AMOS was used to implement the processes and design the research questionnaire. According to SEM, the dependent variable “interaction” via “economic...

Development of Integrated Model of the Wastewater and Organic Solid Waste Flows to Minimize Environmental Impacts and Maximize Energy Recovery for a Residential Building

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hadi, Hamid (Author) ; Avami, Akram (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowdays much of the organic solid waste and wastewater is buried using centralized and traditional methods. This leads to many problems, including groundwater pollution, methane emissions into the atmosphere and rapid transmission of disease. In order to avoid these problems, using a decentralized approach can be a good solution. In this study, recovery of organic waste and wastewater of residential buildings using anaerobic digester as a decentralized way, have been examined. Using experiments, the optimum mass ratio of organic solid waste and wastewater is obtained as 80% and 20% respectively. Biogas production model is developed using mass balance and Balance of electrons in redox...

The developed system consists of a photovoltaic panel, a cooling water system establishing a uniform surface temperature, and a solar water heater. According to the proposed system characteristics, the setup is constructed based on a single mono-crystalline solar panel to absorb more solar radiation intensity and generate more electrical energy per area in compare to a poly-crystalline panel. The preheated water produced by absorbed heat from the photovoltaic is conducted to a solar water heater to satisfy...

    Abstract
In this paper we report experimental results for the performance and rate of heat transfer in copper tubes in solar water heaters with thermosyphonic flow in continuation of experimental data reported in previous publications (Solar Energy, 2003, vol. 74, pp. 441-445, and Energy Sources, 1997, vol. 19, pp. 147-152). We also show a comparison between performances of three kinds of tubes: copper, polypropylene and steel under similar conditions. An analytical relation for calculation of rate of heat transfer in copper tubes is also presented in terms of Nusselt versus Reynolds and Prantdl numbers. A comparison of experimental data showed that performance of copper tubes is slightly better than...

    Abstract
In this paper, a new strategy for control of tubular heat exchanger system has been presented. The proposed approach is realized using generalized predictive control (GPC) scheme and multiple models method. By using the multiple models approach, different operating environments of the system are first modeled. Then in each instant of time, the best model of the system is identified by a fuzzy decision mechanism. Finally, the best control input is chosen appropriately. For demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed approach, simulations are done and the results are compared with those obtained using the single model predictive controller approach. The results can verify the validity of...

    Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop a predictive method for heat transfer coefficients in solar water heaters and their performance evaluation of such heaters with different materials used as heat collectors. Two approaches have been used: conventional method and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to predict the performance of solar water heaters and to compare these two approaches. This performance is measured in terms of outlet temperature by using a set of conventional feed forward multi-layer neural networks. The actual experimental data which were used as our network's input gathered from published literature (for polypropylene tubes) and from the experiments carried out recently using...

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 29, Issue 2-3 , 2009 , Pages 290-299 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Mohagheghi, M ; Shayegan, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) is one of the few equipments that are custom made for combined cycle power plants, and any change in its design affects all performance parameters of a steam cycle directly. Thus providing an optimization tool to optimize its design parameters and the layout of its heat exchangers is of great importance. A new method is introduced for modeling a steam cycle in advanced combined cycles by organizing non-linear equations and their simultaneous solutions by use of the hybrid Newton methods in this article. Thereafter, optimal thermodynamic performance conditions for HRSGs are calculated with the help of the genetic algorithm. In the conclusion, the...
