Precipitate strengthening of pyramidal slip in Mg–Zn alloys

    Abstract
The mechanical properties of Mg-4wt.% Zn alloy single crystals along the [0001] orientation were measured through micropillar compression at 23 °C and 100 °C. Basal slip was dominant in the solution treated alloy, while pyramidal slip occurred in the precipitation hardened alloy. Pyramidal dislocations pass the precipitates by forming Orowan loops, leading to homogeneous deformation and to a strong hardening. The predictions of the yield stress based on the Orowan model were in reasonable agreement with the experimental data. The presence of rod-shape precipitates perpendicular to the basal plane leads to a strong reduction in the plastic anisotropy of Mg. © 2020 Elsevier B.V

Aging behaviors of Al 6061 and Al 6061/ SiCp composite

    , Article Advanced Materials Research ; Volume 410 , 2012 , Pages 240-244 ; 10226680 (ISSN) ; 9783037853160 (ISBN) Ourang, S. M. R ; Ekrami, A ; Seyed Reihani, S. M ; Mousavi Abarghouie, S. M. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In the present research the aging behavior of Al6061 alloy and Al6061/SiCp composite fabricated by powder metallurgy method was investigated. The solution treatment of the samples were carried out at 527°C for 2, 3and 4 h followed by aging at 180°C for different aging times between 1 and 10 h. The existence of SiC particles led to increasing the peak hardness of the composite. The peak hardness of the composite took place at shorter times than that of the 6061 alloy for the samples solution treated for 3and 4 h, but took place at longer times for the samples solution treated for 2 h. The optimum solution treating time was about 3 h for both the composite and the 6061 alloy that led to the...

    Abstract
In the present research work the 2024 aluminum alloy was reinforced with SiC particles via powder metallurgy method. The effect of heat treatment conditions on artificial aging kinetics was investigated. The solution treatment of the composite sample and the unreinforced alloy was carried out at 495 °C for 1, 2 and 3 h followed by aging at 191 °C for various aging times between 1 and 10 h. The existence of SiC particles led to increasing the peak hardness of the alloy. The peak hardness of the composite sample took place at shorter times than that of the unreinforced alloy for the samples solution treated for 2 and 3 h, but took place at longer times for the samples solution treated for 1 h....

Recrystallization behavior of multi-directionally forged over-aged and solution treated Al-Cu-Mg alloy during non-isothermal annealing

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 132 , 2017 , Pages 250-256 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Khani Moghanaki, S ; Kazeminezhad, M ; Logé, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The recrystallization behavior of an Al-Cu-Mg alloy is investigated in multi-directionally forged over-aged and solution treated alloys, during non-isothermal annealing. Deformation and non-isothermal annealing are performed with a Gleeble 3800 thermo-mechanical simulator. The hardness measurements show that there is a thermal stability in mechanical properties during non-isothermal annealing up to 250 °C with heating rate of 10 K·min− 1. Differential scanning calorimetry curves of deformed over-aged and solution treated alloys describe the related precipitation phenomena. EBSD maps demonstrate that partially recrystallized and fully recrystallized microstructures appear in deformed...

Mechanical behavior and texture development of over-aged and solution treated Al-Cu-Mg alloy during multi-directional forging

    , Article Materials Characterization ; Volume 135 , 2018 , Pages 221-227 ; 10445803 (ISSN) Khani Moghanaki, S ; Kazeminezhad, M ; Logé, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The effects of initial heat treatments, i.e. solution treating and over ageing, on deformation behavior of an age hardenable Al-Cu-Mg alloy, including mechanical properties and texture evolution, during multi-directional forging (MDF) are investigated. Hardness measurements, electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD) maps, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are carried out. Mechanical behaviors of the alloy in terms of compressive stress and hardness test after MDF are investigated. In both solution treated and over-aged alloys, the compressive stress during MDF shows an increase up to the second pass, and by further straining the flow stress is decreased. However, shear and...

    Abstract
In order to optimize the aging treatment of Mg-1.8Zn-0.7Si-0.4Ca alloy, different times and temperatures of solid solution and age hardening were applied to the alloy specimens. Microstructures and mechanical properties of the specimens were investigated using the optical microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with an energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer, x-ray diffraction, hardness, and shear punch tests. The lowest hardness and strength were achieved by solution treating of the alloy at 500 °C for 8 h, presenting the optimal condition for solution treatment of the alloy. The microstructural examinations revealed three different precipitates consisting of CaMgSi,...
