Infeasibility proof and information state in network information theory

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Information Theory ; Vol. 60, Issue. 10 , 2014 , Pages 5992-6004 ; ISSN: 00189448 Gohari, A ; Anantharam, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we revisit the structure of infeasibility results in network information theory, based on a notion of information state. We also discuss ideas for generalizing a known outer bound for lossless transmission of independent sources over a network to one of lossy transmission of dependent sources over the same network. To concretely demonstrate this, we apply our ideas and prove new results for lossy transmission of dependent sources by generalizing: 1) the cut-set bound; 2) the best known outer bound on the capacity region of a general broadcast channel; and 3) the outer bound part of the result of Maric, Yates, and Kramer on strong interference channels with a common message

A distortion outer bound for communicating correlated gaussian sources over a gaussian MAC

    , Article IEEE Communications Letters ; Volume 21, Issue 7 , 2017 , Pages 1457-1460 ; 10897798 (ISSN) Setayesh, M ; Behroozi, H ; Khalaj, B. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this letter, we consider two problems of sending a bivariate Gaussian source through a two-user Gaussian non-orthogonal multiple-access channel. We provide a new distortion outer bound for the considered joint source-channel coding problems, which significantly reduces the gap between inner and outer bounds of the distortion for correlation coefficients below a threshold. Furthermore, numerical results show, that under some conditions, our proposed outer bound matches with the inner bound obtained via the separate source-channel coding scheme, which proves the optimality of this scheme. © 1997-2012 IEEE

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider reliable transmission of a discrete memoryless source over multi-relay networks with correlated Side Information (SI) available at the relay nodes and the final receiver. We obtain a necessary condition for reliable source transmission over a multi-terminal network with SI, which results in a necessary condition for a multi-relay network with SI, as a special case. We also propose a separate source-channel coding scheme, and based on it, a sufficient condition for a multi-relay network with SI is derived. Based on a partitioning method and the nature of a degraded relay network, we propose another coding scheme which results in a sufficient condition for a degraded...

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider lossy source transmission over a Multiple Access WireTap Channel (MAC-WT). In this model, there are two correlated sources, each of them is available at the corresponding encoder. The receiver tries to reconstruct both sources with desired distortions. The sources should be kept secret from an eavesdropper. We propose a joint source-channel scheme for the MAC-WT. In this scheme, each source sequence is mapped to common and private codewords. The common codeword can be decoded by the eavesdropper. The private codeword needs to be kept secret from the eavesdropper by using Wyner's wiretap coding. We also discuss some special cases of the proposed scheme

    Abstract
In this thesis we consider transmitting an analog Gaussian source over an AWGN channel in the presence of an interference completely known at the transmitter intwo cases: 1) Compression bandwidth with interference uncorrelated with the sourceand 2) Matched bandwidth channel in the presence of interference correlated withthe source to be transmitted. We study joint source-channel coding schemes basedon hybrid digital-analog (HDA) codes. After providng a brief review, we will proposetwo new schemes for the ?rst case and one novel scheme for the second case. Aswe will see both schemes for the ?rst case achieve the optimal mean-squared error(MSE) distortion. The proposed HDA schemes can...

Application of Artificial Intelligence for Encoding and Decoding in the Internet of Things Communication

    Abstract
One of the important issues in the field of telecommunications is the optimization of coding algorithms. Especially, in the field of the Internet of Things (IoT) due to the low processing power and the limitation in the energy storage of devices, the needs for such optimized algorithms are more essential. One effective method to improve coding algorithms in the transmission of messages is obtained by paying more attention to the amount of information contained in each part of the message and transmit information accordingly. Some coding methods have addressed this issue indirectly, but they do not pay enough attention to this practical issue. Based on the simple but practical idea mentioned...

    Abstract
In this paper, we investigate reliable transmission of three correlated discrete memoryless sources over a two-relay network. In our considered model, one of the sources is available at the sender whereas, the other two sources are known to the first and the second relay. We present both joint and separate source-channel coding schemes, and derive the corresponding sets of sufficient conditions for reliable sources transmission. The manner of cooperation in both schemes is Decode-and-Forward strategy. In the joint approach, we generalize the correlation preserving mapping technique to our model using nested backward decoding. Our proposed separate approach is based on Slepian-Wolf source...

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider the problem of transmitting a Bi-variate Gaussian source S = (S1, S2) over an average-power-limited additive White Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The receiver wants to estimate both S1 and S2. We propose a new Hybrid Digital Analog (HDA) joint source-channel coding scheme and obtain its achievable distortion region. For comparison, we also obtain an outer bound for the set of all achievable distortion pairs

    Abstract
We study hybrid digital-analog (HDA) joint source-channel coding schemes in transmitting an analog Gaussian source over an AWGN channel in the presence of an interference, correlated with the source. We analyze these schemes to obtain achievable (mean-squared error) distortion-power tradeoffs. For comparison, we also obtain two outer bounds for the achievable distortion-power tradeoff; those are two necessary conditions under which (D,P) is achievable. Using numerical examples, we demonstrate that, a two-layered coding scheme consisting of analog and Costa coding performs well compared to other provided HDA schemes

    One-shot achievability via fidelity

    Abstract
This paper provides a universal framework for establishing one-shot achievability results for coordination and secrecy problems. The framework is built on our previous framework [Yassaee et al. 13] for proving one-shot achievability results in the context of source and channel coding problems. In the coordination and secrecy problems, one needs to compare an induced distribution by encoding/decoding with an ideal distribution (satisfying some desirable properties) using a suitable criterion. In this paper, we use fidelity as a criterion for measuring the closeness of induced distribution with the ideal distribution. The framework exploits the stochastic mutual information coders at the...

    Abstract
In this paper, we address the stability problem of a noiseless linear time invariant control system over parallel Gaussian channels with feedback. It is shown that the eigenvalues-rate condition which has been proved as a necessary condition, is also sufficient for stability over parallel Gaussian channels. In fact, it is proved that for stabilizing a control system over the parallel Gaussian channels, it suffices that the Shannon channel capacity obtained by the water filling technique is greater than the sum of the logarithm of the unstable eigenvalues magnitude. In order to prove this sufficient condition, we propose a new nonlinear joint source channel coding for parallel Gaussian...

Transmitting Correlated Gaussian Sources over a Gaussian Multiple-Access Channel

    Abstract
This thesis considers the problem of communicating correlated Gaussian sources through a Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC). A well known application of these problems is a sensor network. In a distributed sensor network, sensors measure the required parameters from the environment, encode and transmit them to a fusion center through a multiple-access channel. Then, the fusion center makes a decision about the environmental measured parameters by data processing on the received data from sensors. In these networks, one of the main concerns is the power limitation at sensors. As a result, we usually look for an encoding method that is not only simple but also has a nearly optimal...

Joint SourceChannel Coding in Video Transmission Using Deep Learning

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghayoumi Ghamsari, Moein (Author) ; Behroozi, Hamid (Supervisor) ; Hossein Khalaj, Babak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the signal transmission cycle in a telecommunication network, there are two coding blocks, which can be realized in two ways. In the traditional way, source coding is first used to remove redundancies and compress information. Then, channel coding is used to transmit on the telecommunication channel and deal with noise and other destructive factors of the channel. In other words, source coding and channel coding are done separately. In contrast, signal transmission can be done by joint source¬channel coding. According to Shannon separation theorem and with the fulfillment of the conditions mentioned in the theorem, the method of separation of source and channel coding in a point to point...

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a modified joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme on the transmission of an analog Gaussian source over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel in the presence of an interference, correlated with the source. This setting naturally generalizes the problem of sending a single Gaussian source over an AWGN channel, in the case of bandwidth-matched, and with uncorrelated interference in which separation-based scheme with Costa coding is optimal. We analyze the modifeied scheme to obtain achievable (mean-squared error) distortion-power tradeoff. For comparison, we also obtain a new outer bound for the achievable distortion-power tradeoff. Using numerical...

    Abstract
We study transmission of a memoryless Laplacian source over an average-power limited additive white Laplacian noise (AWLN) channel under bandwidth compression in two cases: 1) matched signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), 2) mismatched SNR. A hybrid digital-analog (HDA) joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme is proposed and show that this scheme can achieve a distortion very close to the lower bound on mean-absolute error (MAE) distortion under matched SNR conditions

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider the reliable transmission of correlated sources over the relay channel. The destination wishes to find a lossless reconstruction of both sources. We find the sufficient conditions under which the relay can partially cooperate with the sender to transmit the sources to the destination. The achievability scheme is based on regular encoding/backward decoding strategy. The proposed region includes the known region for multiple-access channel with correlated sources and the achievable rate of relay channel with partial decode-and-forward strategy, as special cases. A class of deterministic relay channels is considered. It is shown that the error-free transmission of...

    Abstract
In this study, the authors study lossy communication of correlated sources over a multiple-access wiretap channel (MAC-WT). Consider a system with two transmitters, a receiver and an eavesdropper. There are two correlated sources where each of them is observed by the corresponding transmitter, separately. Each transmitter wishes to describe its source sequence to the receiver with a desired distortion. The sources need to be kept secret from the eavesdropper. They find an achievable region for the MAC-WT with correlated sources by separation. A joint source-channel coding scheme for the MAC-WT is also proposed. They consider lossy communication of a bivariate Gaussian source over Gaussian...

On the optimal performance in asymmetric gaussian wireless sensor networks with fading

    Abstract
We study the estimation of a Gaussian source by a Gaussian wireless sensor network (WSN) where L distributed sensors transmit noisy observations of the source through a fading Gaussian multiple access channel to a fusion center. In a recent work Gastpar, [ "Uncoded transmission is exactly optimal for a Simple Gaussian Sensor Network", IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 54, no. 11, pp. 52475251, Nov. 2008] showed that for a symmetric Gaussian WSN with no fading, uncoded (analog) transmission achieves the optimal performance theoretically attainable (OPTA). In this correspondence, we consider an asymmetric fading WSN in which the sensors have differing noise and transmission powers. We first...

    Abstract
In this letter, we study the joint source-channel coding problem of communicating the linear functions of correlated Gaussian sources over a Gaussian multiple access channel. In this setup, each transmitter observes one of two correlated sources. The receiver aims to reconstruct a linear combination of both correlated Gaussian sources within an average distortion level. For this setup, we first obtain a new lower bound on the achievable distortion and then, we propose a novel lattice-based hybrid transmission scheme and its achievable distortion is derived. We show that our proposed scheme can achieve the optimal distortion under some conditions

Joint source-channel coding using finite state integer arithmetic codes

    Abstract
Inserting redundancy to arithmetic codes is a common strategy to add error detection capability to this well-known family of source codes. By using this strategy error correction is possible through some decoding algorithms such as Viterbi decoder. In this paper a system has proposed that uses finite state integer arithmetic codes (FSAC) as a joint source-channel code in combination with a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) and a List Viterbi decoder. The proposed scheme has shown better performance than previous ones. © 2009 IEEE
