    Abstract
Sports video analysis and camera calibration are important applications which rely on accurate homography computation as a challenging task. Homography refinement is an important step in the task of accurate homography computation and homography tracking. Also, in certain applications (such as homography tracking) the process speed is of great importance. A robust and fast method for accurate refinement of highly inaccurate homographies in soccer video frames is proposed in this paper. To achieve that goal, a new homography model fitting method named the point-line (PL) method is proposed. It uses point-line correspondences to compute the homography, rather than point correspondences or line...

    Abstract
Purpose: A basketball match is characterized by intermittent high-intensity activities, thereby relying extensively on both aerobic and anaerobic metabolic pathways. Here, we aimed to compare the metabolic fluctuations between the four 10-min quarters of high-level basketball games using metabolomics analyses. Methods: 70 male basketball players with at least 3 years of experience in the Iran national top-league participated. Before and after each quarter, saliva samples were taken for subsequent untargeted metabolomics analyses, where Principal component analysis (PCA) and Partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were employed for statistical analysis. Results: Quarters 1 and 3...

Design and Prototypingof a Fast Acting Anti Roll Over System for SUVs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Balaghi Enalou, Hossein (Author) ; Durali, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
SUVs are susceptible to rollover in high speed due to their shape and high center of mass. This causes numerous limitations for this class of vehicles thus preventing their rollover is a prime issue. In this study, two flywheels with high angular momentum have been used to provide stabilizing momentum on the onset of rollover. However, if these flywheels keep rotating during the normal driving, they will cause maneuvering limitations for the car. The idea of using flywheels is completed by bringing them to speed in a few hundredth of a second when the vehicle is suspicious to rollover. To achieve this, dynamics of the car before and after lift off of one side is investigated. Also the dynamic...

A hybrid PSO-SA algorithm for the travelling tournament problem

    , Article European Journal of Industrial Engineering ; Volume 6, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 2-25 ; 17515254 (ISSN) Tajbakhsh, A ; Eshghi, K ; Shamsi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Sports scheduling has become an important area of applied operations research in recent years, since satisfying fans and teams' requests and revenues of a sports league and TV networks may be affected by quality of the league schedule. While this type of scheduling problem can be solved by mathematical methods and exact solutions are accessible, it computationally leads to hard problems. The travelling tournament problem (TTP) is defined as minimising total travelling distance for all teams in a league. In this study, a new mathematical model for the TTP with the no-repeater constraint is presented. In addition, a very fast hybrid metaheuristic algorithm is proposed, which combines particle...

Design and Prototyping of a Fast Acting Gyroscopic Actuator for Vehicle Stability Applications

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Samani, Armin (Author) ; Durali, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Cars with high center of gravity, such as SUV-Sport Utility Vehicles- have high tendency to roll over in high speeds and rapid maneuvers. An idea formerly proposed is to use a high speed rotating disc like a gyroscope on the onset of the rollover to exert a high stabilizing moment on the vehicle, and consequently prevent rollovers. Also using two counter rotating discs with opposite nutation will prevent interference with the car other degrees of freedom. To reduce the interference of the spinning discs with the vehicle dynamics, the discs are to be brought to speed by the action of a high accelerating mechanism during the rollover process(similar to the action of an airbag). This project...

Investigation of safety attitude on passenger vehicle type choice: An integrated choice and latent variable (ICLV) approach

    , Article IATSS Research ; Volume 45, Issue 3 , 2021 , Pages 336-346 ; 03861112 (ISSN) Mohammadi, A ; Kermanshah, M ; Moeinaddini, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2021
    Abstract
Passenger Vehicle Type Choice (PVTC) has an undeniable impact on crash severity and costs. To estimate that, one must carefully consider subjective factors as well as objective ones. Ignoring the role of subjective variables can cause bias in the estimation of the effective variables' coefficients. The present paper investigates the impact of safety attitude, transportation attitude, and lifestyle on PVTC in a bi-level structure. To do so, we used the data from 633 face-to-face interviews conducted in Iran. The passenger vehicles investigated in this study are divided into five categories according to their weight and safety performance: mini, compact, medium, large, and sport utility...

Real-time Graphical Elements Addition to Live and Instant Replays of Broadcast Soccer Videos

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fouladighaleh, Sajjad (Author) ; Kasaei, Shohreh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
During live broadcast of sports events (such as soccer matches), it is usually useful to provide more information to the audience by adding graphical elements to the video feed; elements such as offside line, distance to goal, and virtual advertisement. This requires to extract information about the camera; for instance, camera position, rotation, and focal length. Hence, we need a method to find the camera calibration data from the image. Previous works have focused on extracting this information based on the points on the pitch. But, that led to insufficient data for projecting 3D points which can be located outside of the pitch. In this thesis, in the preprocessing stage of the first...

Minimizing the Number of Breaks in Double Round Robin Tournaments with Different Permutation of Rounds in 2nd Half Season

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yektamaram, Ali Reza (Author) ; Salmasi, Nasser (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Sports scheduling with its interesting theory and application has been the subject of many research recently. Different problems arise from different league structures with different objectives. Inspired by the structure of soccer leagues in Britain and Netherlands, we study structures in which a different permutation of first half-season rounds is played during second half-season. Some leagues like Premier league in addition to this structure have a special property in which two teams may do not play against each other in the first half-season and play twice in the second half-season. Therefore, we study both structures separately. We present a mathematical model to cover both structures....

Confinement dynamics of a semiflexible chain inside nano-spheres

    , Article Journal of Chemical Physics ; Volume 139, Issue 4 , 2013 ; 00219606 (ISSN) Fathizadeh, A ; Heidari, M ; Eslami Mossallam, B ; Ejtehadi, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
We study the conformations of a semiflexible chain, confined in nano-scaled spherical cavities, under two distinct processes of confinement. Radial contraction and packaging are employed as two confining procedures. The former method is performed by gradually decreasing the diameter of a spherical shell which envelopes a confined chain. The latter procedure is carried out by injecting the chain inside a spherical shell through a hole on the shell surface. The chain is modeled with a rigid body molecular dynamics simulation and its parameters are adjusted to DNA base-pair elasticity. Directional order parameter is employed to analyze and compare the confined chain and the conformations of the...

    Abstract
Sport video shot classification is a basic step in the sport video processing. For many purposes such as event detection and summarization, shot classification is needed for content filtering. In this paper, we present a new method for soccer video shot classification. At first, in-field and out-of-field frames are separated. In in-field frames three features based on number of connected components and shirt color percent in vertical and horizontal strips are extracted. The features are all new and showed excellent discrimination in the feature space. These features are given to SVM for classifying long, medium and close-up shots. One of the advantages of our method is that, close-ups can be...

    Abstract
Fully automatic algorithm for estimating the 3D human pose from multiple uncalibrated cameras is presented. Unlike the state-of-the-art methods which use the estimated pose of previous frames to restrict the candidates of current frame, the proposed method uses the viewpoint of previous frame in order to obtain an accurate pose. This paper also introduces a method to incorporate pose estimation results of several cameras without using the calibration information. The algorithm employs a rich descriptor for matching purposes. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated on a soccer database which is captured by multiple cameras. The dataset of silhouettes, in which the related 3D...
