    Control oriented modeling of a radial turbine for a turbocharged gasoline engine

    Abstract
    This paper presents a control oriented model for predicting turbine major variables in a turbocharged spark ignition engine. The turbine is simulated as a two-nozzle chamber where the pressure ratio over the two nozzles is not the same. A convex nonlinear estimation algorithm is formulated to determine the relation between these pressure ratios. The new model is experimentally validated with transient and steady state data collected from a 1.7 liter gasoline engine. The results show the new model can predict the turbine mass flow with an average error of 1.4%.     Abstract
    In many cases, multiple-fault diagnosis of plant-wide systems based on steady-state data is impossible. To solve this problem, a new diagnosis strategy based on neural networks has been proposed. In the suggested framework, the neural network is used as the diagnoser trained by a hybrid set of steady and dynamic characteristic data of the system. The dynamic characteristic data include overshoot and undershoot values of measured variables and their corresponding occurrence times. To evaluate its performance, the proposed scheme was used in the diagnosis of the concurrent faults of the Tennessee Eastman (TE) process.     Abstract
    A series of low speed wind tunnel tests were conducted to study the unsteady aerodynamic behavior of an airfoil sinusoidally oscillating in plunge. The experiments included measuring the surface pressure distribution over a range of reduced frequencies, k = 0.03 - 0.06. In addition, steady state data were acquired and were used to furnish a baseline for further analysis and comparison. The model was oscillated with amplitude of ±15 cm and at three different mean angles of attack of 0, 10° and 18°.
