    Abstract
The substantial presence of different uncertainties in energy systems highlights the need for probabilistic analysis of operational and planning studies. Motivated by this fact, a new stochastic planning framework for energy hubs (EHs) is presented in this study based on the probability transformation concept. In the proposed framework, a measure of relative-likelihood impact is developed to estimate the importance of uncertainty sources in the studies, which, in turn, can remarkably reduce the overall complexity of stochastic problems. Step-by-step algorithm for implementation of the proposed framework on planning studies of an EH is also addressed in this study. Three different case...

Long-term planning of integrated local energy systems using deep learning algorithms

    Abstract
Optimal investment and operations of integrated local energy systems (ILESs) require medium to long-term prediction of energy consumption. To forecast load profiles, deep recurrent neural networks (DRNNs) are becoming increasingly useful due to their capability of learning uncertainty and high variability of load profiles. However, to explore and choose a DRNN model, out of conceivably numerous configurations, depends entirely on the performing task. In this regard, we tune and compare seven DRNN variants on the task of medium and long-term predictions for heating and electricity consumption. The ultimate DRNN model outperforms two state-of-the-art machine learning techniques, namely...

Assessing operational flexibility of microgrids considering electrical and thermal energy resources

    Abstract
With high growth rate of demand for energy in different societies, the need for energy resources has been increased significantly. This has resulted in introduction of new energy resources, i. e. renewable energy resources in generation sector of energy systems. However, the intrinsic features of these energy resources call for higher flexibility in different sectors of energy systems. Flexibility in a comprehensive sense tries to cover the amount of imbalance between production and demand in energy systems. This paper has attempted to introduce the concept of operational flexibility in microgrids and it also has presented a step-by-step algorithm to assess this operational index based on a...

Innovative method in seismic design of slab-on-girder steel bridges

    , Article Journal of Constructional Steel Research ; Volume 64, Issue 12 , 2008 , Pages 1420-1435 ; 0143974X (ISSN) Lotfollahi, M ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Most slab-on-girder steel bridges have been designed and constructed without seismic resistance consideration; as a result, their members, connections, and more commonly their substructure are not sized and detailed to provide the required ductile response needed during major earthquakes. A ductile seismic retrofit solution proposed in this investigation consist of converting of existing end diaphragms into ductile end diaphragms and replacing the end cross-frames and the lower lateral-braced panels adjacent to the supports by special ductile diaphragms. Consequently, this creates ductile fuses to protect the rest of the super- and substructure. This paper illustrates the typical seismic...
