    Abstract
Today's manufacturing enterprises struggle to adopt cost-effective manufacturing systems. Overview of the recent manufacturing enterprises shows that successful global manufacturing enterprises have distributed their manufacturing capabilities over the globe. The successes of global manufacturing enterprises depend upon the entire worldwide integration of their product development processes and manufacturing operations that are distributed over the globe. Distributed manufacturing agents' collaboration and manufacturing data integrity play a major role in global manufacturing enterprises' success. There are number of works, conducted to enable the distributed manufacturing agents to...

    , Article International Journal of Computer Integrated Manufacturing ; Volume 25, Issue 6 , 2012 , Pages 473-487 ; 0951192X (ISSN) Houshmand, M ; Valilai, O. F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Nowadays, companies strive to survive in a competitive global environment. Reduction of product development cycle plays a major role in market penetration and cost reduction. To speed up product development/modifications, it is suggested to adopt a collaborative product development approach. Collaborative design and manufacture requires an integrated platform to support related CAx product data models. To integrate CAx product data, a number of solutions are proposed. The most successful solution is adopting the STandard for Exchange of Product Data (STEP). In the course of the STEP standard structure and procedure development, two approaches can be recognised: classical and modular. The...

C-MAN: a Novel Manufacturing Platform Based on Cloud Manufacturing Paradigm

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Fatahi Valilai, Omid (Author) ; Houshmand, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The synergy of fundamental factors like changes in governmental policies, global expansions of the manufacturing industries and improvements in technology related to reliability of manufacturing information flow have created the global manufacturing revolution in the first years of the twenty-first century. The concept of global manufacturing enterprise potentially brings up benefits and opportunities for today’s manufacturing enterprises like reduction of manufacturing costs by utilizing low labor-cost countries, reduction of business risks and introduction of new markets as a new source for enterprise growth. However, it enforces enterprise to endure costs to adopt the global...

    Abstract
Integrated design includes CAD, process planning and CNC code generation based on an integrated data structure. To enable different CAD/CAM software solutions to be interoperable, it is required to support data exchange in manufacturing enterprises. To realize interoperability there are two basic approaches: i. to focus on STEP standard to support data exchange between CAD systems as well as CAPP/CAM and CNC machining systems; the use of STEP standard ensures the data integration based on STEP standard. ii. utilizing a platform consists of structures and procedures to enable exchange of data between different CAD/CAM/CAPP software applications seamlessly. In this article, the important...

A layered and modular platform to enable distributed CAx collaboration and support product data integration based on STEP standard

    , Article International Journal of Computer Integrated Manufacturing ; Volume 26, Issue 8 , 2013 , Pages 731-750 ; 0951192X (ISSN) Houshmand, M ; Valilai, O. F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Exploitation of distributed resources spread in diverse enterprises is a new and critical issue in the course of product development cycles. Although the development of IT technology has provided a base for realisation of this paradigm and assisted different CAx agents, such as designers and engineers, to exchange their ideas and design information, but still many CAx software agents are working separately and locally in manufacturing environments and most of the current CAx software suites have been known to be inconvenient for enabling collaboration among manufacturing agents in distributed manufacturing enterprises. The distributed CAx collaboration and data integrity play a major role in...

Machining precedence of 21/2D interacting features in a feature-based data model

    , Article Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing ; Volume 22, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 145-161 ; 09565515 (ISSN) Mokhtar, A ; Xu, X ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In process planning, determining feature's machining precedence is an essential step. The task becomes more difficult if features interact with each other, in which case the feature precedence information may suggest multiple machining sequences of the features. This paper considers interacting features in a feature-based model for process planning tasks. For each feature, precedence information is generated considering both roughing and finishing operations. A rule-based system is developed and implemented based on the information about machining precedence of the interacting features. The STEP-NC data model is used as the underlying data model. This model is object-oriented and compliant...

A Novel Framework to Enable STEP-NC Extension of Tool Library Based on Cloud Manufacturing Paradigm

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alavian, Pooya (Author) ; Houshmand, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
ISO 10303 Standard also known as STEP, is an standard in the domain of mechanical manufacturing that describes data relating to drawings, design, machining, process planning, engineering and other aspects of product which all together can describe the entire life cycle of products. However, as this standard is newly born and developing these data models are expensive and time consuming, so far, no data model for description of cutting tools is developed. In this project we study the STEP parts and protocols to understand how data is stored. We study EXPRESS Modeling language, the language developed as part of the STEP standard which is the official language of data modeling in STEP. And use...

A Novel System to Enable Interoperability Among Distributed CAM Software Packages and CNC Machining Post Processors

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Ali (Author) ; Houshmand, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today’s businesses strategies are changing from traditional point of view to globalization and distributed enterprise. Companies have to consider flexibility in term of quantity and variety. They have to manage and organize the product development chain where low cost resources are available. Therefore, enterprises and companies should facilitate the flow of information and increase the interoperability between distributed agents. The main information flow occurs in CAD/CAM/CNC chain. Information flow at the end of the chain has always been the main obstacle to enable interoperability. Old Standards for programming CNC machine tools are the main problem to exchange data and facilitate...

Integration of Design and Manufacturing Systems Using Neutral Data Structure

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mokhtar, Alireza (Author) ; Hooshmand, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In competitive environment of quick market changes, developing an interoperable manufacturing system is a necessity. Process planning as a connection link between design and manufacturing, has never been able to integrate these up/down stream activities and in spite of employing computer systems, CAPP’s information has been managed in an isolated manner. To realize interoperability, the exchange of part and product data must be independent of their platforms. There are two basic approaches for this purpose: i) Utilizing interface and ii) Utilizing neutral formats. STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product data) plays a significant role as a neutral data model to integrate design,...
