    Abstract
Background: Stomach cancer is a major health problem in many countries. Understanding the current burden of stomach cancer and the differential trends across various locations is essential for formulating effective preventive strategies. We report on the incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to stomach cancer in 195 countries and territories from 21 regions between 1990 and 2017. Methods: Estimates from GBD 2017 were used to analyse the incidence, mortality, and DALYs due to stomach cancer at the global, regional, and national levels. The rates were standardised to the GBD world population and reported per 100 000 population as age-standardised incidence rates,...

Preparation and evaluation of bioactive and compatible starch based superabsorbent for oral drug delivery systems

    , Article Journal of Drug Delivery Science and Technology ; Volume 23, Issue 5 , 2013 , Pages 511-517 ; 17732247 (ISSN) Pourjavadi, A ; Ebrahimi, A. A ; Barzegar, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Novel types of highly swelling hydrogels (superabsorbent) were prepared by grafting crosslinked poly acrylic acid-co-2-hydroxyethylmetacrylate (PAA-co-HEMA) chains onto starch through a free radical polymerization method. The effect of grafting variables (i.e., concentration of methylenebisacrylamide (MBA), acrylic acid/2-hydroxy methymetacrylate (AA/HEMA) weight ratio, ammonium persulfate (APS), starch, neutralization percent, were systematically optimized to achieve a hydrogel with a maximum swelling capacity. The superabsorbent (SAP) formation was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The controlled-release behavior of...

Environmental study on discharged wastewater of Albourz Industrial City

    Abstract
The treatment facility of Albourz Industrial City was established in 1999 at the southeast of Albourz Mountain with an area of 200,000 square meters. Currently, 40,000 cubic meters of industrial wastes are treated daily utilizing biological method of activated sludge up to the second phase without chlorination in this treatment facility. Then, the discharged wastes are directed toward the lower agricultural lands. The environmental status of the region was investigated by testing the impact of wastewater and agricultural products in four tries. In two tries, the levels of COD and BOD were higher than the environmental standards, but there was no trace of heavy metal contamination in any of...

    Abstract
Importance: Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting have been identified as major obstacles in achieving these goals. All of these have in common that they require information on the local cancer epidemiology. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study is uniquely poised to provide these crucial data....

Optimization of alginate-whey protein isolate microcapsules for survivability and release behavior of probiotic bacteria

    , Article Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology ; Volume 190, Issue 1 , 2020 , Pages 182-196 Sajadi Dehkordi, S ; Alemzadeh, I ; Vaziri, A. S ; Vossoughi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2020
    Abstract
The present study aimed to improve the survivability of L. acidophilus encapsulated in alginate-whey protein isolate (AL-WPI) biocomposite under simulated gastric juice (SGJ) and simulated intestinal juice (SIJ). Microcapsules were prepared based on emulsification/internal gelation technique. Optimal compositions of AL and WPI and their ratio in the aqueous phase were evaluated based on minimizing mean diameter (MD) of the microcapsules and maximizing encapsulation efficiency (EE), survivability of cells under SGJ (Viability), and release of viable cells under SIJ (Release) using Box-Behnken experimental design. Optimal composition comprising 4.54% (w/v) AL, 10% (w/v) WPI, and 10% (v/v)...

Preparation and biological evaluation of radiolabeled-folate embedded superparamagnetic nanoparticles in wild-type rats

    , Article Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry ; Volume 287, Issue 1 , January , 2011 , Pages 119-127 ; 02365731 (ISSN) Jalilian, A. R ; Hosseini Salekdeh, S. L ; Mahmoudi, M ; Yousefnia, H ; Majdabadi, A ; Pouladian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this study, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) embedded by folic acid (SPION-folate) were prepared by a modified co-precipitation method. The structure, size, morphology, magnetic property and relaxivity of the SPION-folate were characterized systematically by means of XRD, VSM, HRSEM and TEM and the interaction between folate and iron oxide (Fe3O 4) was characterized by FT-IR. The particle size was shown to be ≈5-10 nm. To ensure biocompatibility, the interaction of these SPION with mouse connective tissue cells (adhesive) was investigated using an MTT assay. Consequently, gallium-67 labeled nanoparticles ([67Ga]-SPION-folate) were prepared using 67Ga with a high labeling...

An extended algorithm for autonomous grasping of soft tissues during robotic surgery

    , Article International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery ; Volume 16, Issue 5 , 2020 , Pages 1-15 Amirkhani, G ; Farahmand, F ; Yazdian, S. M ; Mirbagheri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Background: Autonomous grasping of soft tissues can facilitate the robotic surgery procedures. The previous attempts for implementing auto-grasping have been based on a simplistic representation of the actual surgery maneuvers. Method: A generalized three-zone grasp model was introduced to consider the effect of the pull force angulation on the grasp mode, that is, damage, slip, or safe grasp. Also, an extended auto-grasping algorithm was proposed in which the trigger force is automatically controlled against the pull force magnitude and direction, to achieve a safe and secure grasp. Results: The autonomous grasping experiments against a varying pull force in a phantom study indicated a good...
