    , Article International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering ; Volume 52, Issue 5-6 , 2001 , Pages 489-501 ; 00295981 (ISSN) Lewis, R. W ; Khoei, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
It is well known that strain localization and indeed displacement discontinuity can arise in materials exhibiting plastic behaviour. Indeed such localization is almost certain to occur if strain softening or non-associated behaviour exists, though it can be triggered even when ideal plasticity is assumed. This study is concerned mainly with the manner in which the numerical discretization process has to be devised so as to capture the localization phenomenon. In this paper, a method is presented for applying the mixed formulation to study the prediction of localization phenomenon in powder-forming processes. This study is focused on the performance of mixed u - π triangular elements to study...

XFEM, strong discontinuities and second-order work in shear band modeling of saturated porous media

    , Article Acta Geotechnica ; Volume 13, Issue 6 , 2018 , Pages 1249-1264 ; 18611125 (ISSN) Mikaeili, E ; Schrefler, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We investigate shear band initiation and propagation in fully saturated porous media by means of a combination of strong discontinuities (discontinuities in the displacement field) and XFEM. As a constitutive behavior of the solid phase, a Drucker–Prager model is used within a framework of non-associated plasticity to account for dilation of the sample. Strong discontinuities circumvent the difficulties which appear when trying to model shear band formation in the context of classical nonlinear continuum mechanics and when trying to resolve them with classical numerical methods like the finite element method. XFEM, on the other hand, is well suited to deal with problems where a discontinuity...

Determination of Forming Limit Diagrams by Strain Gradient Theory

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Movaffaghi, Sanli (Author) ; Asempour, Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent decades, the importance of theoretical and experimental researches on sheet metal forming has been revealed due to its wide-spreading applications. The purpose of these researches is to optimize the forming processes and minimize the existing imperfections. Since classical theories don’t include parameters for describing the dependence of metals behavior on size effects or inhomogeneous plastic deformation effects, gradient theories are considered in many researches. In gradient theories, this dependence is considered by changing the constitutive equations and the existence of higher order of strain gradient in zones with inhomogeneous deformation. By considering the localized and...

Role of 3D-paired pentagon-heptagon defects in electronic and transport properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons

    , Article Applied Physics A: Materials Science and Processing ; Volume 116, Issue 1 , July , 2014 , Pages 295-301 ; ISSN: 09478396 Fotoohi, S ; Moravvej Farshi, M. K ; Faez, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Electronic and transport properties of 11 zigzag graphene nanoribbons (11-z-GNRs) with two types of 3D-paired pentagon-heptagon defects (3D-PPHDs) are studied using density functional theory combined with non-equilibrium Green's function method. The C ad-dimers that have been introduced to z-GNRs to form these 3D-PPHDs have induced local strains forcing the C-bonds in the ad-dimers to hybridize in sp3-like rather than sp2-like orbitals. Such transformations that cause extra electrons to accumulate around the 3D-PPHDs are responsible for the variations in the electronic and transport properties of the defected z-GNRs. Density of states (DOS) for 11-z-GNRs containing either type of 3D-PPHDs,...

Error estimation, adaptivity and data transfer in enriched plasticity continua to analysis of shear band localization

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Volume 31, Issue 6 , 2007 , Pages 983-1000 ; 0307904X (ISSN) Khoei, A. R ; Asil Gharebaghi, S ; Tabarraie, A. R ; Riahi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
In this paper, an adaptive FE analysis is presented based on error estimation, adaptive mesh refinement and data transfer for enriched plasticity continua in the modelling of strain localization. As the classical continuum models suffer from pathological mesh-dependence in the strain softening models, the governing equations are regularized by adding rotational degrees-of-freedom to the conventional degrees-of-freedom. Adaptive strategy using element elongation is applied to compute the distribution of required element size using the estimated error distribution. Once a new mesh is generated, state variables and history-dependent variables are mapped from the old finite element mesh to the...

    , Article Finite Elements in Analysis and Design ; Volume 41, Issue 14 , 2005 , Pages 1384-1400 ; 0168874X (ISSN) Khoei, A. R ; Bakhshiani, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
In this paper, a hypoelasto-viscoplastic endochronic model is developed to capture the strain localization phenomena. The elastic response is stated in terms of hypoelastic model and endochronic constitutive equations are stated in unrotated frame of reference. The infinitesimal theory of endochronic plasticity is extended to large strain range on the basis of the additive decomposition of the strain rate tensor and hypoelasticity. Constitutive equations are stated in unrotated frame of reference that greatly simplifies endochronic constitutive relations in finite plasticity and yields the efficiency of the presented algorithm by total uncoupling material and geometrical nonlinearities. An...

Effect of Local Buckling on Deformation Capacity of Steel Pipe Braces

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sedehi, Omid (Author) ; Moghaddam, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, finite element (FE) models were developed to study hysteresis behavior of pipe braces subjected to cyclic loading. Thus steel braces previously tested by other investigators are used. The results of the analysis are in good agreement with the experiments. Besides, the FE analysis could also simulate both the overall and local buckling. As a result, a sharp growth in plastic strains is followed by geometric changes at the mid-span due to local buckling. The sharp growth of plastic strains is entitled as strain rises. In fact, the local buckling triggers rupture of braces at the mid-span. The local buckling initiation is identified by the sharp growth in plastic strains....

Modeling Shear Band Propagation in Saturated Porous Media Using eXtended Finite Element Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mikaeili, Ehsan (Author) ; Kazemi, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Shear band is more relevant in porous medias rather than continuum media. Shear band is a narrow region of solid experiencing intense shearing. After initiation of shear band, the sliding on two sides of the band occurs. The area inside the shear band undergoes extreme plastic deformation, while experiences elastic unloading outside of the band. In porous materials, the direction of slip and discontinuity in displacement field is not same, as a result of dilation. In fact dilation requires an increase in the volume of the shear band zone. The main difficulty in modeling the shear band is that the width of shear band in contrast to the dimension of the media, is too small. Consequently, the...

Evaluation of Deformation and Formability Behaviors of the Ferritic-Pearlitic Steel Sheets by Employing the Experimental Approaches and Micromechanical Modeling

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Isavand, Samaneh (Author) ; Assempour, Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A broad range of plain carbon steels have ferrite-pearlite microstructures, which are used in many industrial applications due to the good strength and formability provided by the typical combination of ferrite grains and pearlite colonies. The mechanical behavior of ferrite-pearlite steels inherently originates from the configurations of ferrite grains and pearlite colonies, which comprised alternating lamellae of cementite with randomly distributed orientations in a ferrite matrix. In this thesis, three different experimental-numerical approaches were employed to investigate the deformation behavior, damage mechanisms, and formability of the ferrite-pearlite steels. At the first step, two...

Electronic and transport properties of monolayer graphene defected by one and two carbon ad-dimers

    , Article Applied Physics A: Materials Science and Processing ; Vol. 116, issue. 4 , 2014 , p. 2057-2063 Fotoohi, S ; Moravvej-Farshi, M. K ; Faez, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Using density functional theory combined with non-equilibrium Green's function method, we have investigated the electronic and transport properties of graphenes defected by one and two carbon ad-dimers (CADs), placed parallel to the graphene lattice. Addition of these CADs to graphenes creates 3D paired pentagon-heptagon defects (3D-PPHDs). The band structure, density of states (DOS), quantum conductance, projected DOS, as well as the current-voltage characteristic per graphene super-cells containing each type of 3D-PPHD are calculated. The local strain introduced to graphene by 3D-PPHDs forces the C-bonds in the dimers to hybridize in sp 3-like rather than sp 2-like orbitals, creating...

    Abstract
In this paper the effect of strain and impurity on the quantum conductance of semiconducting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been studied by ab-initio calculations. The effect of strain and impurity on the CNT conducting behavior and physical characteristics, like density of states (DOS), band structure, and atomic local density of state (LDOS), is considered and discussed separately and simultaneously. Our results show that the quantum conductance of semiconductor CNTs is increased by compression strain, elongation strain, and replacing nitrogen and boron doping in its structure. The amount of increasing in the conductance depends on the type of strain and impurity. Conductance of CNT can be...

    Abstract
The main objective of this study is to predict the deformation behavior, strain localization, and forming limits of ferrite-pearlite steels by incorporating the contributions of the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of the underlying microstructure. A realistic microstructure-based micromechanical approach in the framework of the crystal plasticity (CP) model was carried out using the periodic representative volume element (RVE) generated from the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image. The homogenized stress–strain curve of the realistic RVE was validated with the experimental data with an error of less than 6.71% at large strains. Afterward, the initial...

Phase field theory for fracture at large strains including surface stresses

    , Article International Journal of Engineering Science ; Volume 178 , 2022 ; 00207225 (ISSN) Jafarzadeh, H ; Farrahi, G. H ; Levitas, V. I ; Javanbakht, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Phase field theory for fracture is developed at large strains with an emphasis on a correct introduction of surface stresses at nanoscale. This is achieved by multiplying the cohesion and gradient energies by the local ratio of the crack surface areas in the deformed and undeformed configurations and with the gradient energy in terms of the gradient of the order parameter in the reference configuration. This results in an expression for the surface stresses which is consistent with the sharp surface approach. Namely, the structural part of the Cauchy surface stress represents an isotropic biaxial tension, with the magnitude of a force per unit length equal to the surface energy. The surface...

Hot workability of cast and wrought Ni–42Cu alloy through hot tensile and compression tests

    , Article Transactions of Nonferrous Metals Society of China (English Edition) ; Volume 26, Issue 6 , 2016 , Pages 1589-1597 ; 10036326 (ISSN) Arjmand, M ; Abbasi, S. M ; Karimi Taheri, A ; Momeni, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Nonferrous Metals Society of China
    Abstract
In order to analyze the flow behavior and workability of Ni–42Cu in cast and wrought conditions, hot deformation tests were performed at temperatures and strain rates within the ranges of 900–1150 °C and 0.001–1 s−1, respectively. Tensile tests showed a “hot ductility trough” at 950 °C for both alloys. The drop in hot ductility was more considerable in the cast alloy because of the sluggish dynamic recrystallization. The hot ductility drop and grain boundary cracking, particularly in the cast alloy, were attributed to the segregation of detrimental atoms to the boundaries. It was shown that the hot ductility of the wrought alloy could be improved with increasing strain rate. It was...

    Abstract
The heat-affected zone (HAZ)softening is considered one of the most significant challenges during welding of ferrite–martensite dual-phase (DP) steels. In fact, the strain localization in the softened area results in a premature fracture that degrades the mechanical properties of the joint. Herein, the objective is to investigate the effectiveness of improved cooling using a high thermal diffusivity backing plate (BP) to reduce HAZ softening and enhance the mechanical properties of friction stir-welded DP700 steel. Accordingly, friction stir butt welding of DP700 steel was conducted using copper and mild steel BPs. The findings show that the replacement of steel BP with copper significantly...
