    , Article Journal of Materials & Design ; December 2013, Volume 52, Pages 881–887 Akbarpour, M. R ; Salahi, E ; Alikhani Hesari, F ; Kim, H. S ; Simchi, A. (Abdolreza) ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, the microstructural and mechanical features of monolithic pure Cu and Cu matrix nanocomposites reinforced with three different fractions (2, 4, and 6 vol%) of SiC nanoparticles (n-SiC) fabricated via a combination of high energy mechanical milling and hot pressing techniques were investigated. The fabricated composites exhibited homogeneous distribution of the n-SiC with few porosities. It was found that the grain refinement, the planar features within the grains, and the lattice strains increase with increase in the n-SiC content. The yield and compressive strengths of the nanocomposites were significantly improved with increases in the n-SiC content up to 4 vol%; then they...

    Abstract
The effect of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at different temperatures (room temperature, 120, 150 and 180 °C) on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-7075 solid solution alloy was investigated. Microstructure of the specimens was examined using orientation imaging microscopy, transmission electron microscopy as well as X-ray diffractometer, and mechanical properties were measured by Vickers microhardness and tensile tests. Microstructural investigations showed that after 3 or 4 passes of ECAP, fine grains with average grain sizes in range of 300-1000 nm could be obtained at different ECAP temperatures. Increasing ECAP temperature from 120 to 180 °C caused a decrease in...

Notch-texture strengthening mechanism in commercially pure titanium thin sheets

    , Article Materials and Design ; Vol. 55, issue , March , 2014 , p. 683-689 Nasiri-Abarbekoh, H ; Abbasi, R ; Ekrami, A ; Ziaei-Moayyed, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Simultaneous effects of notch and texture on strengthening mechanisms of rolled thin sheets of commercially pure titanium were investigated. The presence of notch led to the restriction of deformation systems and different fracture behaviors compared to un-notched specimens. The loss of material's ability to accommodate plastic deformation at the notch tip with increase in rolling reductions changed the notch strengthening phenomenon to the notch weakening one. At medium levels of deformation, due to the simultaneous development of a triaxial stress state and strong basal texture at the notch tip, a new strengthening mechanism which is called "notch-texture strengthening mechanism" led to a...

    Abstract
In the present work, accumulative roll bonding (ARB) was used as an effective method for manufacturing nanoparticle/Al composite filler metals of tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. After welding, the distribution of ceramic nanoparticles and mechanical properties of welds were investigated. By applying ARB, ceramic nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed in the composite filler metals. Consequently, the welds produced by these filler metals had a uniform dispersion of ceramic nanoparticles in their compositions. The test results showed that the yield strength of welds was greatly increased when using the nanoparticle/Al composite filler metals. The improvement in the yield strength was...

Study on static strain aging of 6082 aluminium alloy

    , Article Materials Science and Technology ; Volume 26, Issue 2 , Jul , 2010 , Pages 169-175 ; 02670836 (ISSN) Dadbakhsh, S ; Karimi Taheri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this study both the quench aging and static strain aging kinetics of a 6082 Al alloy were investigated at a temperature range of 130-200°C using the Vickers hardness and tensile test. The activation energy and dislocation density were determined at different stages of the aging phenomenon. The former was used to analyse the kinetics of aging and the latter to interpret the competition of strengthening and recovery mechanisms during aging. It is shown that different activation energies are achieved depending on the aging time and temperature relating to formation of appropriate precipitates at different stages of aging. Moreover, it is revealed that prestrain reduces the activation energy....

    Abstract
Nanocrystalline Al-5vol%Al2O3 nanocomposite was synthesised by mechanical milling of a mixture containing nanometric alumina with an average particle size of 35 nm. Morphology of as-synthesised powder was investigated by SEM while crystallite size of Al matrix was determined by XRD analysis. The results confirmed formation of nanocrystalline Al matrix induced by severe plastic deformation during mechanical milling. Nanocomposite bars were produced by hot powder extrusion route. TEM investigation of as-extruded nanocomposite revealed formation of elongated grains along the extrusion direction decorated by alumina nanoparticles. Tensile and compressive properties of as-extruded nanocomposite...

Dissimilar gas tungsten arc weld-brazing of Al/steel using Al-Si filler metal: microstructure and strengthening mechanisms

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 749 , 15 June , 2018 , Pages 121-127 ; 09258388 (ISSN) Pouranvari, M ; Abbasi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
In this paper gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) was applied to dissimilar lap joining of Al6061 and Zn-coated galvanized low carbon steels using Al-5 wt% Si filler metal. The joining mechanism was based on a hybrid brazing/welding mechanism. Three factors contributed to the joint strength including (i) low heat input rate of GTAW process which reduce the intermetallic compound layer growth during joining, (ii) the special role of Si in the filler metal which was able to change the nature of reaction layer from predominantly η-Al5Fe2 phase to predominately less brittle Al-Fe-Si phase and (iii) the flux-like action of Zn-coating which ensures complete wetting of steel surface by Al melt. It was...

    Abstract
Transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steel resistance spot welds are delicate to low-energy interfacial failure via crack propagation through martensitic fusion zone during cross-tension (CT) loading. This paper addresses the effect of three different types of in situ postweld heat treatment (PWHT) on the mechanical properties of TRIP steel resistance spot welds. Depending on the post weld second pulse current level, three different strengthening mechanisms were found including (i) martensite tempering with reduced hardness, (ii) refining of martensite packets with improved toughness and (iii) nugget re-melting/enlargement combined with possible reduction of grain boundary impurity...

    Abstract
Governing equilibrium equations of thick-walled spherical vessels made of material following linear strain hardening and subjected to a steady-state radial temperature gradient using elasto-plastic analysis are derived. By considering a maximum plastic radius and using the concept of thermal autofrettage for the strengthening mechanism, the optimum wall thickness of the vessel for a given temperature gradient across the wall thickness is obtained. Finally, in the case of thermal loading on a vessel, the effect of convective heat transfer on the optimum thickness is studied and a general formula for the optimum wall thickness and design graphs for several different cases are presented. © 2008...

Strengthening and ductilization mechanisms of friction stir processed cast Mg–Al–Zn alloy

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 781 , 2020 Jiryaei Sharahi, H ; Pouranvari, M ; Movahedi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
AZ91 alloy, the most widely used Mg casting alloy, exhibits low strength/ductility and weak energy absorption, which is a function of its large grain size and the presence of a coarse and continuous network of β-Mg17Al12 intermetallic compounds. This work demonstrated that friction stir processing (FSP) enables enhancement of strength and energy absorption capability of AZ91 alloy. The influence of FSP treatment on various potential strengthening mechanisms, including grain boundary, solid solution, and sub-micron particle strengthening mechanisms, was studied. It is identified that the grain boundary strengthening plays a significant contribution to the strength of the FSP treated AZ91. FSP...

    Abstract
Effects of Fe particle volume percent (from 0 to 5%) and changing the tool rotation direction in each pass were studied on the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of the in situ Al/intermetallic composites produced by three passes friction stir processing (FSP) with ∼10 µm Fe particles. Optical and scanning electron microscopes were used for the investigation of the composite homogeneity, formation of Al–Fe intermetallic compounds, and fracture surfaces. Tensile and microhardness tests were also carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of the composites. Solid-state reactions between the aluminum matrix and Fe particles led to in situ formation of Al3Fe and Al5Fe2...
