CodedSketch: A coding scheme for distributed computation of approximated matrix multiplication

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose CodedSketch, as a distributed straggler-resistant scheme to compute an approximation of the multiplication of two massive matrices. The objective is to reduce the recovery threshold, defined as the total number of worker nodes that the master node needs to wait for to be able to recover the final result. To exploit the fact that only an approximated result is required, in reducing the recovery threshold, some sorts of pre-compression are required. However, compression inherently involves some randomness that would lose the structure of the matrices. On the other hand, considering the structure of the matrices is crucial to reduce the recovery threshold. In...

Cryptanalysis of McEliece cryptosystem variants based on quasi-cyclic low-density parity check codes

    Abstract
One of the approaches to modify the McEliece cryptosystem to overcome its large key size is replacing binary Goppa codes with a new structured code. However, this modification makes such cryptosystems encounter some new attacks. There are a few modified McEliece cryptosystem variants which are known to be secure. One of them is the cryptosystem introduced by Baldi et al. which uses quasi-cyclic low-density parity check (QC-LDPC) codes. This cryptosystem is still unbroken as no efficient attack has been reported against it since 2008. In this study, an attack has been applied to this cryptosystem which is feasible when the code length is a multiple of a power of 2. Also an important weakness...

Investigation of shear lag effect on tension members fillet-welded connections consisting of single and double channel sections

    Abstract
Shear lag phenomenon has long been taken into consideration in various structural codes; however, the AISC provisions have not proposed any specific equation to calculate the shear lag ratio in some cases such as fillet-welded connections of front-to-front double channel sections. Moreover, those equations and formulas proposed by structural codes are based on the studies that were conducted on riveted and bolted connections, and can be applied to single channel sections whilst using them for fillet-welded double channels would be extremely conservative due to the symmetrical shape and the fact that bending moments will not develop in the gusset plate, resulting in less stress concentration....

Endurance time method for multi-component analysis of steel elastic moment frames

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 2 A , 2011 , Pages 139-149 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Valamanesh, V ; Estekanchi, H. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The Endurance Time (ET) method is a time history-based dynamic analysis procedure which uses special intensifying acceleration functions for evaluation of the seismic response of structures. One of the potential applications of the ET method is in the three-dimensional analysis of buildings under multidirectional excitations. In this paper, considering horizontal components of excitation, an algorithm for the multi-component analysis of building structures by the ET method is proposed, and results of the ET method for various steel moment frames with 1 to 7 stories are compared with results from time history analysis with real earthquakes. Results show that based on recommendations of...
