Reliability study of HV substations equipped with the fault current limiter

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 27, issue. 2 , 2012 , p. 610-617 ; ISSN: 8858977 Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Rahmati, I ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Of particular interest to restrict the short-circuit level of interconnected power systems is to exploit fault current limiter (FCL) technologies. FCLs let the system planners devise new reliable and rather economical substation configurations and provide the possibility of proposing a promising cost-effective and prompt solution to the fault current over duty problem in the existing substations. This paper attempts to assess reliability of substation architectures accommodating the FCL operation and, besides, numerically investigates the FCL's impacts on the substation reliability indices. In order to clarify the proposed approach, two case studies with and without FCL are analyzed and...

Availability comparison of various power substation automation architectures

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 28, Issue 2 , 2013 , Pages 566-574 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Hajian Hoseinabadi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This study aims at quantitatively assessing the availability indices of various substation automation systems. In order to illustrate the proposed technique, first, nine types of substation automation architectures are reviewed. The reliability block diagrams of various substation automation architectures are then developed. Subsequently, comparative studies are performed to demonstrate the most reliable architectures in comparison with the others. The results obtained by the proposed approach show the impact of repair on availability indices of the automation system. Finally, different sensitivity analyses are conducted for all architectures, where the impact of varying availability of all...

Reliability evaluation of HV substations in the presence of Fault Current Limiter

    , Article 2009 IEEE Bucharest PowerTech: Innovative Ideas Toward the Electrical Grid of the Future, 28 June 2009 through 2 July 2009 ; 28 June-2 July , 2009 ; 9781424422357 (ISBN) Rahmati, I ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Short circuit current is one of the major threats for power system stability. Power system should have the ability to detect and clear these faults within a specified time. The protection system can clear the faults only if the interruption capability of the circuit breakers is higher than the fault level. Expansion of the grid and installation of new power on the scale that is envisaged will require practical solutions to a number of technical challenges. One of the technical challenges is fault level management as system expansion often results in increased fault levels beyond the design limits of the existing switchgears. Replacing the old equipments particularly circuit breakers with the...

Evaluation of substation reliability indices and outage cost based on fuzzy arithmetic

    Abstract
Substations and switching stations are critical segments in an electric power system. Their impacts on system operation and the consequential effects of their components failure are usually more dominant in overall power system reliability. There is always a degree of uncertainty in the practical input data used in reliability analysis. This paper presents a conceptual possibilistic approach using fuzzy set theory to manage the uncertainties in the reliability input data such as failure rate, repair time and operation of protective devices. Suitable fuzzy numbers are proposed for components reliability data. Load of feeders are also represented by fuzzy numbers and their impact on ENS...
