    Empirical study on effect of surface texture and grain size on displacement measurement of optical flow sensors

    Abstract
    Although, the optical flow sensors which are used in optical mouse have high resolution in measuring displacement, their error refrain us from a precise and reliable measurement. Besides, these sensors require calibration based on the surface. Their error has different sources and the most important is surface texture in micro level. In this research, we have worked to find surface conditions on which sensor measurement is more precise. For this aim, we used an 800 DPI low cost optical flow sensor.     In this research, the effect of various surface treatments including laser processing, grit blasting and anodizing on chemical structure, surface topography, and bioactivity of Ti-6Al-4V was investigated. Six groups of samples were prepared by a combination of two alternative laser processes, grit blasting and anodizing. Selected samples were first evaluated using microanalysis techniques and contact roughness testing and were then exposed to in vitro environment.     Abstract
    A new analytical model based on the shear-lag theory is developed for stress analysis and steady state creep deformation of short fiber composites subjected to an applied axial load. A perfect fiber/matrix interface is assumed and an exponential law is considered for describing the steady state creep behavior of the matrix material. The matrix stress field components obtained from the proposed analytical solution satisfies the equilibrium and constitutive creep equations.     Abstract
    In this study, we simulate rarefied gas flow through a confined nano-impinging jet using direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. The effects of geometrical parameters, pressure ratio, and wall conditions on the heat transfer from a hot surface are examined. Hot surface modeled via diffusive constant wall temperature. Various inlet/confining surface conditions such as specular, adiabatic, and constant temperature are implemented and the effects of them on the wall heat flux rates are studied.     Today, passenger and racing boats increasingly utilize surface-piercing propellers. This type of propeller operates in two distinct phases of water and air simultaneously. As a result, this propeller type has additional characteristics that must be investigated separately from conventional propellers.     A modified two-surface critical state plasticity model for saturated and unsaturated soil is presented in this study. The key modification in new model is inclusion of an alternative yield surface used to simulate the behavior of unsaturated soils in addition to corresponding saturated conditions. Moreover, a numerical technique is used to obtain an incremental stress–strain response from loading curves. Modification is applied continuously in each incremental step to return the final stress states and hardening parameters to the yield surface.     Abstract
    The effect of a plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) pre-treatment on joining of AA 5052 aluminium alloy and polypropylene by friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is investigated using lap tensile shear tests. Two surface conditions of the AA 5052 alloy are compared, one with a PEO pre-treatment in a silicate-based electrolyte, another without any pre-treatment. The resultant specimens are examined by high resolution scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and attenuated total reflectance-infrared spectroscopy.
