    Stiffness of knee-spanning external fixation systems for traumatic knee dislocations: A biomechanical study

    Abstract
    Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the relative stiffness of four common external fixation (XF) configurations used to span and stabilize the knee after knee dislocation. Methods: Synthetic composite femora and tibiae connected with cords were used to simulate a knee. Four configurations of external fixation were tested: anterior femoral pins with monotube (XF1), anterolateral femoral pins with monotube (XF2), anterolateral femoral pins with two connecting rods (XF3), and hinged ring fixator (XF4).     Abstract
    Over the past few years, visual prostheses (namely, Argus II retinal implant) and gene therapy have obtained FDA approval in treating blindness resulting from retinitis pigmentosa. Compared to gene therapy; Argus II is less costly with a demonstrated favorable outcome, though the vision is yet artificial. To obtain better results, expectation counseling and preoperative retinal assessment are critical. The global experience with Argus II has enrolled no more than 300 cases so far. The first Argus II retinal prosthesis in Iran was successfully implanted in Shiraz (October 2017). To date, Argus II artificial retina is implanted in four patients in Iran.     Abstract
    Spine musculoskeletal (MS) models make simplifying assumptions on the intervertebral joint degrees-of-freedom (rotational and/or translational), representation (spherical or beam-like joints), and properties (linear or nonlinear). They also generally neglect the realistic structure of the joints with disc nuclei/annuli, facets, and ligaments. We aim to develop a novel MS model where trunk muscles are incorporated into a detailed finite element (FE) model of the ligamentous T12-S1 spine thus constructing a gold standard coupled MS-FE model.
