    Abstract
In this research, the handling behavior of an intermediate class passenger car has been optimized by altering its front suspension parameters. For this purpose, a validated virtual model of the car, constructed by Adams/Car software, has been used. The utilized objective function is a combination of eight criteria indicating handling characteristics of the car. To reduce the amount of optimization parameters, a sensitivity analysis has been done by implementing the Design of Experiments method capabilities. Optimization has been done using the Response Surface Method. The obtained optimization results show a considerable improvement in the system response. Copyright © 2006 SAE International

Direct controller order reduction by identification in closed loop

    , Article Automatica ; Volume 37, Issue 11 , 2001 , Pages 1689-1702 ; 00051098 (ISSN) Landau, I. D ; Karimi, A ; Constantinescu, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2001
    Abstract
The paper addresses the problem of directly estimating the parameters of a reduced order digital controller using a closed loop type identification algorithm. The algorithm minimizes the closed loop plant input error between the nominal closed loop system and the closed loop system using the reduced order controller. It is assumed that a plant model (if necessary validated in closed loop with the nominal controller) is available. One of the original features of this approach is that it can use either simulated or real data. The frequency bias distribution of the parameter estimates shows that the reduced order controller maintains the critical performance of the nominal closed loop system. A...

    Abstract
The front double wishbone suspension parameters are related as a multi-body model. By replacing the new suspension and steering hard points, the performance of the suspension system is studied using CATIA and MSC ADAMS software for modeling and analyzing, respectively. In this case two tests were done, steady state circular test in ADAMS/View and parallel wheel travel in ADAMS/Car. The strut position is directly related to Kingpin inclination angle and scrub radius. The increase the amount of these two parameters has an effect on steering performance in low speed and negative displacement, such as camber, caster and Kingpin inclination angles in negative displacement of wheels. Moreover, the...

    Abstract
Mixing of solid nanoparticles in viscous fluids is a key stage in synthesis of nanocomposites and can affect their final properties. A multi-step preparatory mixing is developed to synthesize the nanocomposites of layered silicate in thermosetting polymers. This study aims to investigate the influences of mixing conditions and steps taken to process the thermosetting nanocomposites on the viscoelastic properties of suspensions. We also examine subsequent influences of mixing on the microstructure and dispersion state of cured hybrids of organically modified clays in a polyester resin. The nanocomposites were prepared in a sequential mixing process developed for the model nanocomposites of...

    Abstract
We present an application of a new controller order reduction technique with stability and performance preservation based on linear matrix inequality optimization to an active suspension system. In this technique, the rank of the residue matrix of a proper rational approximation of a high-order H ∞ controller subject to the H∞ norm of a frequency-weighted error between the approximated controller and high-order H∞ controller is minimized. However, since solving this matrix rank minimization problem is very difficult, the rank objective function is replaced with the nuclear-norm that can be reduced to a semidefinite program, so that it can be solved efficiently. Application to the active...

    Abstract
An optimal preview control of a vehicle suspension system traveling on a rough road is studied. A three-dimensional seven degree-of-freedom car-riding model and several descriptions of the road surface roughness heights, including haversine (hole/bump) and stochastic filtered white noise models, are used in the analysis. It is assumed that contact-less sensors affixed to the vehicle front bumper measure the road surface height at some distances in the front of the car. The suspension systems are optimized with respect to ride comfort and road holding preferences including accelerations of the sprung mass, tire deflection, suspension rattle space and control force. The performance and power...

    Abstract
Advent of passenger cars has caused people to use them for more efficiency in their performance and wasting less time. Problems, however, still exist in them. For instance, since people travel with cars, their human bodies undergo in fatigue, restlessness, and sometimes health problems. Human body reaction under external vibration depends on the amplitude, frequency, and acceleration of the applied external excitation. These limitations which are usually announced by the bureau of standards imply the necessity of control of amplitude, vibration, frequency, and acceleration received by human body due to cars passing humps and bumps. In this paper, a quarter car model with active suspension...

    Abstract
Magneto-rheological (MR) fluids consist of magnetic particles in carrying fluid. One of the drawbacks in using MR dampers in laboratory work is their price. At present, there is a compelling need for the production of the laboratory scale of MR fluids to lower their production cost. In this study, to show that the MR fluid is an applicable prototyped laboratory scale of single ended and mono-tube, MR dampers with a prototyped MR fluid are presented. The main features of produced MR fluid and dampers are simplifying in constructing and their low cost. These dampers are useful for laboratory research work. To illustrate the validity of the MR fluids, using this fluid, four MR dampers are made...

    Abstract
An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the effect of silica nanoparticle halos on the stability of the zirconia aqueous suspension. The results of turbidity measurements showed that addition of nanoparticles to the suspension increases the stability of the zirconia suspension for all pH values. The achieved stability refers to the formation of nanoparticle halos around the microparticles that can be observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging. The best stabilization is achievable when zirconia microparticles are at the isoelectric point. The minimum stabilization occurs when microparticles have relatively high zeta potential and the force between micro and...

    Abstract
The steering system is very important in controlling the car. This requires to turning wheels at certain angles. These angles ideally follow the Ackerman geometry. But there is a difference between the real steering angle and the ideal geometry, which caused to steering error. This error depends on two factors, the steering mechanism and the vehicle suspension. Reducing steering error causes to reducing tire wear and increasing vehicle maneuverability at low speeds. In addition, the stability of the vehicle increases when crossing straight line and uneven roads. So far, mechanisms have been designed in accordance with the Ackerman geometry, but in these mechanisms used cam profile. Also...
