Navigating towards sustainable development: A system dynamics approach

    , Article Futures ; Volume 38, Issue 1 , 2006 , Pages 74-92 ; 00163287 (ISSN) Hjorth, P ; Bagheri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Traditional fragmented and mechanistic science is unable to cope with issues about sustainability, as these are often related to complex, self-organizing systems. In the paper, sustainable development is seen as an unending process defined neither by fixed goals nor by specific means of achieving them. It is argued that, in order to understand the sources of and the solutions to modern problems, linear and mechanistic thinking must give way to non-linear and organic thinking, more commonly referred to as systems thinking. System Dynamics, which operates in a whole-system fashion, is put forward as a powerful methodology to deal with issues of sustainability. Examples of successful...

There's a significant growth in sustainability reporting among top companies around the world in which based on KPMG report in 2017, 93 percent of 250 world's top companies have released their annual report in this field and this much attention to the reporting is a sign of special importance for and emphasizes on the necessity of corporate social responsibility in organizations. Since before doing the thesis there was no official statistics of sustainability reporting among Iranian companies, the research gap has been determined and by studying 100 Iranian top companies based on Industrial Management Institute ranking in 2017, we understood only 6 percent of these companies have already...

Application of coupled lattice boltzmann and Phase-field methods for multiphase flow simulations

, Article ASME 2013 Heat Transfer Summer Conf. Collocated with the ASME 2013 7th Int. Conf. on Energy Sustainability and the ASME 2013 11th Int. Conf. on Fuel Cell Science, Engineering and Technology, HT 2013 ; 2013 ; ISBN: 9780791855492 Premnath, K. N ; Patil, D. V ; Banerjee, S ; Sharif University Of Technology
    Abstract
Coupling of lattice Boltzmann (LB) and phase-field (PF) methods is discussed for simulation of a range of multiphase flow problems. The local relaxation and shifting operators make the LB method an attractive candidate for the simulation of the single-phase as well as multiphase flows. For simulating interface dynamics, LB methods require to be coupled with an appropriate scheme representing interfacial dynamics. To this end, we have used a model based on the order parameter, which could be either an index function or a phase-field variable, and coupled it with a LB solver for the simulation of various classes of complex multi-physics and multiphase flows. The LB method is used to compute...

Toward equitable investment in transport infrastructures: Providing a comparative framework based on theories of justice

    , Article Middle - East Journal of Scientific Research ; Vol. 19, issue. 9 , 2014 , pp. 1215-1225 ; ISSN: 19909233 Behbahani, H ; Nazari, S ; Jahromi, H. N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Equity in distribution is one of the most controversial and essential concepts which for a long time has been the central concern of political philosophers when considering planning concerns of the societies. Transport is a key field by which politicians and decision-makers impose their intention on societies. Although there have been studies discussing equity in transport, yet there is no clear mathematical framework to utilize the equity concept in transportation planning. This study has reviewed equity in transportation, as well as in human science studies to investigate and determine how transportation advantages should be equitably distributed among society members. This review has led...

An alternative definition of sustainable development using stability and chaos theories

    , Article Sustainable Development ; Volume 14, Issue 1 , 2006 , Pages 62-71 ; 09680802 (ISSN) Rassafi, A. A ; Poorzahedy, H ; Vaziri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
This paper is an endeavour to give an alternative definition for sustainable development (SD). It reviews the previous works in this area, and finds common grounds of these works, namely dynamism and quantification of the system. The paper then discusses dynamic stability and relates it to the concept of sustainability. It constructs an analogy between sustainability objectives and dynamic stability. The discussion continues to introduce chaos as one inherent characteristic of socio-economic systems because of their nonlinear behaviour. A new definition of SD is then proposed. It is applied to the dynamic models that describe the inter-relationships of environmental, economic and social...

    Abstract
The aim of this study is to quantify the water-energy-emissions nexus in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). At first, energy auditing is done for two real WWTPs to find out the energy consumption of different plant stages and the energy-saving potentials. The power plant and carbon capture units are taken into account to assess the energy-emission nexus based on emergy flows. Then, the emergy analysis is applied to evaluate the environmental, economic and technical aspects. An emergy performance index (EmIGHG) is presented by the means of emergy flow diagram of the WWTP beside a power plant (considering the electricity production emergy cost) and carbon capture unit (considering the CO2...

    Abstract
Corticosteroids have been the mainstay of uveitis therapy. When intraocular inflammation is unresponsive to steroids, or steroid related side effects become a concern, steroid-sparing medications may be administered which can be classified into immunosuppressive and immunomodulatory agents. Uveitis treatment can be delivered systemically, topically, periocularly or intraocularly. All of the above mentioned medications can entail significant systemic side effects, particularly if administered for prolonged durations, which may become treatment-limiting. Some medications, particularly hydrophobic compounds, may poorly cross the blood-retinal barrier. Topical medications, which have the least...

    Abstract
In the post-recession period, the business environment in developing countries is still relatively undesirable. Based on the reports published, the number of closed entrepreneurs are significantly more than the number of those newly established. These statistics also reflect that the development of entrepreneurship faces several challenges. However, a strategic management program must be accurately conducted to effectively control entrepreneurial challenges based on the limitation of time and financial resources. On the other hand, the program should provide an appropriate opportunity for competitiveness by producing better quality goods and services successfully marketed to consumers. The...

    Abstract
Medical waste management (MWM) is an important and necessary problem in the COVID-19 situation for treatment staff. When the number of infectious patients grows up, the amount of MWMs increases day by day. We present medical waste chain network design (MWCND) that contains health center (HC), waste segregation (WS), waste purchase contractor (WPC), and landfill. We propose to locate WS to decrease waste and recover them and send them to the WPC. Recovering medical waste like metal and plastic can help the environment and return to the production cycle. Therefore, we proposed a novel viable MWCND by a novel two-stage robust stochastic programming that considers resiliency (flexibility and...
