Synchronization Analysis of EEG-Based Brain Functional Network

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alamfard, Vahid (Author) ; Manzuri, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
It is believed that the synchronized activity of different brain areas, is the main cause of information binding inside the brain. Tis is definitely one of the most exciting challenges in modelling modern complex systems. Brain disorders such as schizophrenia,Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, autism and Parkinson’s disease are associated with abnormal synchronization abilities of neural networks. Functional connections can be assessed indirectly by measuring the electrophysiological criteria of ynchronization.Traditionally, in the study of neurophysiological, synchronizations are assessed by analyzing the coherence of frequency-domain characteristics of time series in standard methods for...

Role of Synchronous Sub-network in the Propagation of Synchronization to the Neuronal Population

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Naderi, Amir Mohammad (Author) ; Moghimi Araghi, Saman (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Epilepsy is one of the most common non-communicable neurological disorders, characterized by recurrent seizure symptoms. Although much progress has been made in the diagnosis, control, and treatment of epilepsy in recent years, the exact mechanism of seizures, the specific method for early diagnosis of epilepsy and related syndromes, and definitive treatment for all patients are not yet known. In a type of seizure known as focal seizure, the electrical activity of neurons at the epilepsy focus synchronizes abnormally, and this synchronization can propagate to other regions of the brain in a process called secondary generalization, which finding a method for its prevention is our essential goal...

Geometric Analysis of Synchronization in Neuronal Networks with Coupling Delays

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ramezanzadeh Barki, Sanaz (Author) ; Fotouhi Firouzabad, Morteza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
We study synaptically coupled neuronal networks to identify the role of coupling delays in network synchronized behavior. Identifying the effect of delay is important for understanding information processing functions in the brain and Many studies have been done on the effects of delays on networks where the synapses are exclusively excitatory or inhibitory, but few address networks with both. Thus we focus on this case. In this thesis, we consider a network of excitable, relaxation oscillator neurons where two distinct populations, one excitatory and one inhibitory are coupled with time-delayed synapses. Using singular perturbation analysis, we will study the dynamic behavior of the network...

    Abstract
Temporal synchronization of neuronal activity plays an important role in various brain functions such as binding, cognition, information processing, and computation. Patients suffering from disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease or schizophrenia show abnormality in the synchronization patterns. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a cheap, non-invasive, and easy-to-use method with fine temporal resolution. Modern multichannel EEG data are increasingly being used in brain studies. Traditional approaches for identifying synchronous activity in EEG are through univariate techniques such as power spectral density or bivariate techniques such as coherence. In this paper, we review two methods for...
