Development of an Integrated Solar Energy System for a Typical Educational Building

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Motavaselian, Ali Mohammad (Author) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present thesis, A Computer software has been developed to evaluate technical and economic aspects of photovoltaic systems, off-grid and on-grid configuration, in urban areas where the electricity grid is accessible. As a case study the building of Energy Engineering faculty with annual demand of electricity in lighting section equals to 80048 kWh was considered. Regarding incident radiation and PV system characteristics with the aid of utilizability concept, a technical evaluation has been performed then life-cycle saving index was considered as a criterion for choosing an optimum nominal size of the system. Results show that for current electricity tariff of educational buildings ...

Economic and environmental assessment of a solar-assisted ground source heat pump system in a heating-dominated climate

    , Article International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology ; 2018 , Pages 1-8 ; 17351472 (ISSN) Biglarian, H ; Saidi, M. H ; Abbaspour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Center for Environmental and Energy Research and Studies  2018
    Abstract
In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the use of renewable energy sources in building sector. The ground source heat pumps are a promising alternative for heating and cooling applications. Despite the high coefficients of performance and significant environmental benefits, their performance may deteriorate over the long-term operation if the annual ground loads are not well balanced. An appropriate solution is the use of hybrid ground source heat pump system through which some portion of the thermal loads can be offset by supplemental components. The aim of this study is to assess the feasibility of a solar-assisted ground source heat pump system for heating a detached house...

Configuration design in scalable reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS); a case of single-product flow line (SPFL)

    , Article International Journal of Production Research ; Volume 56, Issue 11 , 2018 , Pages 3932-3954 ; 00207543 (ISSN) Moghaddam, S. K ; Houshmand, M ; Fatahi Valilai, O ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2018
    Abstract
The dynamic nature of today’s manufacturing industry, which is caused by the intense global competition and constant technological advancements, requires systems that are highly adaptive and responsive to demand fluctuations. Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) enable such responsiveness through their main characteristics. This paper addresses the problem of RMS configuration design, where the demand of a single product varies throughout its production life cycle, and the system configuration must change accordingly to satisfy the required demand with minimum cost. A two-phased method is developed to handle the primary system configuration design and the necessary system...

A comprehensive comparative investigation on solar heating and cooling technologies from a thermo-economic viewpoint—A dynamic simulation

    , Article Energy Science and Engineering ; Volume 9, Issue 5 , 2021 , Pages 724-742 ; 20500505 (ISSN) Jafari Mosleh, H ; Behnam, P ; Abbasi Kamazani, M ; Mohammadi, O ; Kavian, S ; Ahmadi, P ; Rosen, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The yearly thermo-economic performance is dynamically investigated for three solar heating and cooling systems: solar heating and absorption cooling (SHAC), solar heating and ejector cooling (SHEC), and heating and solar vapor compression cooling (HSVC). First, the effects of important design parameters on the thermo-economic performance of the systems to supply the heating and cooling loads of the building are evaluated. The systems are parametrically analyzed with the weather conditions of Tehran, Iran. The results show that the life cycle costs (LCC) of the SHAC and HSVC systems are alike and much lower than those of the SHEC system. The HSVC system exhibits the best performance from...

A comparative study on the environmental impact of greenhouses: A probabilistic approach

    , Article Science of the Total Environment ; Volume 675 , 2019 , Pages 560-569 ; 00489697 (ISSN) Golzar, F ; Heeren, N ; Hellweg, S ; Roshandel, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2019
    Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the most important drivers of environmental impacts and identify the influence of parameters on the uncertainty of the environmental impacts in various climate zones and future climate scenarios. We couple a combined greenhouse energy demand-yield simulation tool with a life cycle assessment to identify the drivers for greenhouse energy, water and CO2 demand as well as yield production. Environmental impacts are evaluated using the methods of IPPC for assessing climate change and available water remaining (AWARE) for water scarcity impacts. Furthermore, we compare the results for all five main climate world regions. With a global sensitivity analysis,...

Paths of technological capability building in complex capital goods: the case of hydro electricity generation systems in Iran

    , Article Technological Forecasting and Social Change ; Volume 122 , 2017 , Pages 215-230 ; 00401625 (ISSN) Kiamehr, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper investigates the accumulation of technological capability in latecomer suppliers of complex capital goods by exploring the issue in an Iranian supplier of large hydro electricity generation systems. The findings suggest that, contrary to the conventional paths of catch-up in Asian and Latin American mass-producing electronics firms, and instead of starting from early stages of product lifecycle, the technological capabilities in this case were acquired through a non-linear movement within the stages of designing and installing complex capital goods in projects: starting from the middle stage (engineering and realisation of complex goods in projects), moving to the last stage...
