    Abstract
The current study is aimed at comparison of adsorption behaviors of silica-supported Cu nanoparticles (Si-N-Cu) and micrometric copper powder (Mi-Cu) for uptake of iodine vapor. The Si-N-Cu was synthesized by the decomposition of aqueous Cu(NO3)2 solution at supercritical condition, followed by reduction of the sample by H 2-N2 mixture. The Si-N-Cu sample with 29.4 nm Cu particles adsorbed 95% of I2 at partial pressure 10-5 bar in 1 h, while the 1 μm Mi-Cu adsorbed 51% of iodine in 6 h, indicating higher yield and faster kinetics of the nanometric sample. Theoretical analysis revealed the existence of a strong thermodynamic size effect in the Cu-I2 reaction system, so that molar |ΔG| for 2...

Quantum renormalization group for ground-state fidelity

    , Article New Journal of Physics ; Volume 14 , 2012 ; 13672630 (ISSN) Langari, A ; Rezakhani, A. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Ground-state fidelity (GSF) and quantum renormalization group (QRG) theory have proven to be useful tools in the study of quantum critical systems. Here we lay out a general, unified formalism of GSF and QRG; specifically, we propose a method for calculating GSF through QRG, obviating the need for calculating or approximating ground states. This method thus enhances the characterization of quantum criticality as well as scaling analysis of relevant properties with system size. We illustrate the formalism in the one-dimensional Ising model in a transverse field (ITF) and the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg (XXZ) model. Explicitly, we find the scaling behavior of the GSF for the ITF model in...

Compare numerical modeling and improved understanding of dynamic sessile drop contact angle analysis in Liquid-Solid-Gas system

    Abstract
Dynamic contact angle measurement; as a standard method for surface wettability analysis, is usually conducted through the analysis of sessile drops formed following the low rate injection of fluid from beneath through a drilled hole via an injection needle. However, understanding/characterizing the changes of drop contact angle from the point where the flat solid surface begins is not well discussed yet. Moreover, during the evaluation of size-dependent behavior of contact angle of millimeter-scale drops, the effect of the drilled hole is ignored. In this regard, in the current study, the experimental and thermodynamic characterizations of the sessile drop advancing contact angle...

Investigation of the atomic-scale hysteresis in NC-AFM using atomistic dynamics

    Abstract
In this paper, the hysteresis in the tipsample interaction force in noncontact force microscopy (NC-AFM) is measured with the aid of atomistic dynamics simulations. The observed hysteresis in the interaction force and displacement of the system atoms leads to the loss of energy during imaging of the sample surface. Using molecular dynamics simulations it is shown that the mechanism of the energy dissipation occurs due to bistabilities caused by atomic jumps of the surface and tip atoms in the contact region. The conducted simulations demonstrate that when a gold coated nano-probe is brought close to the Au(0 0 1) surface, the tip apex atom jumps to the surface, and instantaneously, four...
