    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Volume 38, Issue 3 , 1 February , 2014 , Pages 1176-1186 ; ISSN: 0307904X Baghani, M ; Mazaheri, H ; Salarieh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present efficient and accurate analytical expressions for large amplitude free vibration analysis of single and double tapered beams on elastic foundation. Geometric nonlinearity is considered using the condition of inextensibility of neutral axis. Moreover, the elastic foundation consists of a linear and cubic nonlinear parts together with a shearing layer. The nonlinear governing equation is solved by employing the variational iteration method (VIM). This study shows that the second-order approximation of the VIM leads to highly accurate solutions which are valid for a wide range of vibration amplitudes. The effects of different parameters on the nonlinear...

    Abstract
In this study, the homotopy analysis method is used to obtain an accurate analytical solution for fundamental non-linear natural frequency and corresponding displacement of tapered beams. Comparison between the obtained results and numerical solutions shows that the first-order approximation of present study leads to accurate solutions with a maximum relative error less than 0.5%

Nonlinear bending of functionally graded tapered beams subjected to thermal and mechanical loading

    , Article International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics ; Vol. 65, issue , October , 2014 , p. 141-147 Niknam, H ; Fallah, A ; Aghdam, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Non-linear bending analysis of tapered functionally graded (FG) beam subjected to thermal and mechanical load with general boundary condition is studied. The governing equations are derived and a discussion is made about the possibility of obtaining analytical solution. In the case of no axial force along the beam, a closed form solution is presented for the problem. For the general case with axial force, the Galerkin technique is employed to overcome the shortcoming of the analytical solution. Moreover, the Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) method is also implemented to discretize and solve the governing equations in the general form and validate the results obtained from two other...

Thermal buckling behavior of two-dimensional imperfect functionally graded microscale-tapered porous beam

    , Article Journal of Thermal Stresses ; Volume 40, Issue 10 , 2017 , Pages 1201-1214 ; 01495739 (ISSN) Mirjavadi, S. S ; Matin, A ; Shafiei, N ; Rabby, S ; Mohasel Afshari, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This article presents a study on the thermal buckling behavior of two-dimensional functionally graded microbeams made of porous materials. The material composition varies along thickness and length of the microbeam based on the power law distribution. The microbeam is modeled within the framework of Euler–Bernoulli beam theory. The microbeam is considered having variable material composition along thickness. The equations are derived using the modified couple stress theory and the solving process is based on the generalized differential quadrature method. The validity of the results is shown through comparison of the results with the results of other published research. © 2017 Taylor &...

Buckling analysis of tapered composite beams using a higher order finite element formulation

    , Article Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites ; Volume 29, Issue 17 , 2010 , Pages 2663-2683 ; 07316844 (ISSN) Zabihollah, A ; Ganesan, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Tapered composite beams are increasingly being used in various engineering applications such as helicopter yoke, robot arms, and turbine blades. In the present work, the buckling analysis of laminated tapered composite beams is conducted using a higher order finite element formulation. In tapered laminates, the material and geometric discontinuities at ply drop-off locations lead to significant discontinuities in stress distributions. Higher order formulation ensures the continuity of the stress distribution through the thickness of a laminate as well as across the element interfaces, which is very important for the analysis of tapered laminates. In addition, higher order finite element...

Vibration analysis of a rotating magnetorheological tapered sandwich beam

    Abstract
This paper investigates the free vibration analysis of a doubly tapered magnetorheological rotating sandwich beam based on the Euler-Bernoulli theory. The beam is made of a magnetorheological elastomer core sandwiched between two elastic layers. Through energy approach the kinetic and potential energies of the system are written and using the Lagrange equation the discretized form of the governing equation is derived based on the Ritz method. The free vibration analysis is carried out to obtain the natural frequency and the corresponding loss factor of the beam. Finally, after validating the formulation in order to provide a deep insight the effects of different parameters on the free...

    Abstract
This study is conducted aiming to identify the dynamics of a tapered beam, embedded by piezoelectric layer. Narrowing the tip of the beam equipped with piezoelectric patches leads to optimize the output power after excitation by the frequency sweep input. An accelerometer is installed on the beam base, which measures the acceleration that is applied to the system. Piezoelectric sensors also measure the generated voltage. The experimental test data is handled through CIFER software, using Fourier transform and Bode plot in the frequency domain, to obtain appropriate transfer functions. MATLAB is used for nonlinear simulation and validation of discrete transfer functions by a set of data that...
