Contested framings and policy controversies: Analysing biosafety policy-making in Iran

    , Article Science and Public Policy ; Volume 40, Issue 5 , 2013 , Pages 616-627 ; 03023427 (ISSN) Kashani, E. S ; Millstone, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Vigorous debates have taken place within and between many countries about regulatory policy regimes covering the assessment and approval of genetically modified (GM) crops. In Iran, a very vigorous and hotly contested policy debate concerning legislation covering GM crops occurred between 2004 and 2009, but it was confined within government circles with almost no public discussion. This paper analyses the Iranian policy-making process in the period 2006-9. It explains how and why a stalemate arose in disputes between ministries and departments. The chosen analytical framework draws mainly on the regulation of technological risks and the analysis of public policy-making. It deploys the...

The dynamics of university-industry-government relationships in Nanoscience: investigating the Triple-Helix differences between Iran and Switzerland

    , Article Technology Analysis and Strategic Management ; Volume 31, Issue 7 , 2019 , Pages 817-832 ; 09537325 (ISSN) Souzanchi Kashani, E ; Zarghami, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Routledge  2019
    Abstract
This study aims to find the differences between national and international relationships in Iran and Switzerland’s Nanoscience research between 2008–2015. The results show significant differences some of which are attributed to the general dichotomy of developed-developing countries like stronger University-Industry-Government relations in Switzerland; but others are not, especially those pertaining to bilateral relations. In summary, the Government-Industry relations in Switzerland are generally closer in this field because the emerging characteristics of Nanoscience call for more state intervention, even in the context of developed countries. Greater Government-University relations in Iran...

Unpacking the modelling process via sensitivity auditing

    , Article Futures ; Volume 144 , 2022 ; 00163287 (ISSN) Lo Piano, S ; Sheikholeslami, R ; Puy, A ; Saltelli, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Acknowledging the conditionality of model-based evidence facilitates the dialogue between model developers and model users, especially when models are used to guide decisions at the science-policy interface. In general, model users have limited access to verify the realism of a model, being only exposed to model plausibility and trustworthiness; instead, modellers have an an array of validation and verification techniques available. In the end, model credibility is what both developers and users aim for, also in the interest of shielding from the possible pitfall of over-interpreting the model results. To this end, in this contribution we discuss sensitivity auditing, an extension of...

On Possibility of Alternative Technology (Considering Andrew Feinberg’s Theory)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Haqiqat, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Hosseini Sarvary, Hasan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Considering the undeniable role of technology in modern era, we investigate both the concept of technology as well as its relation as a tool with human beings. Modern technologies have had both positive and negative impact on human individual and social lives. In particular, the labor problems, environmental problems, distortion of the classic human perception of the world, and many other problems provide a very disparate perspective compare with the notion of techno-utopianism. Therefore, many contemporary philosophers such as Andrew Feinberg have made serious criticisms of technology and its consequences. Feinberg states that there is a possibility in reforming the currently derailed role...

Conceptual Developments in the Evolution of Innovation Systems Approach

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mousavi, Arash (Author) ; Kermanshah, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The systemic approach to innovation plays a central and somewhat unifying role within the field of innovation studies. The main tenets of the approach were developed during the last decades of twentieth century by a bunch of researchers who were tackling with the problem of the economic nature of innovation and its role in growth and competitiveness. The innovation systems approach spread out rapidly throughout the globe and established itself as a framework for studying and policy making in academia and national and supranational organizations. This vast and fast expansion, however, was accompanied by a set of critical contemplations on the theoretical soundness of the approach and also by...

A Critical Study of Presumptions of Socio-Technical Transitions from the Point of View of the School of Critical Realism

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abavisani, Arsalan (Author) ; Taqavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the questions which has its origin in science and technology studies and innovation studies, but neglected, is that of how we understand the transition and how the transition processes occur. In recent decades, such questions have fallen into an interdisciplinary field called Transition Studies. The main purpose of transition studies is to identify and solve complex and multilevel issues and challenges (such as climate change). Drawing on the views of theorists such as Roy Bhaskar and Frank Geels, this thesis seeks to critically study the foundations and assumptions of a particular type of transition called socio-technical transitions. Socio-technical transitions refer to the changes...
