Thickness optimization of polyurethane floor insulation based on analysis of the heat transfer in a multi-layer

    , Article ASME 2014 12th Biennial Conference on Engineering Systems Design and Analysis, ESDA 2014 ; Vol. 3, issue , 2014 Moosavi, A ; Saidi, M. H ; Reshadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
During the year, due to weather conditions, the temperature fluctuations at surface level cause problems in underground pipes as a result of freezing water. One of the best prevention strategies is the use of polyurethane floor insulation for keeping the temperature of clay above zero degrees Celsius. In this study to calculate the minimum thickness of polyurethane insulation layer, the differential equation of energy is solved based on principle of separation of variables using imaginary eigenvalues for consistency with the temperature distribution in multi-layer consist of asphalt, gravel and polyurethane with finite thickness and clay as a semiinfinite medium with periodic thermal...

Long-range correlation in cosmic microwave background radiation

    , Article Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics ; Volume 84, Issue 2 , 2011 ; 15393755 (ISSN) Movahed, M. S ; Ghasemi, F ; Rahvar, S ; Tabar, M. R. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We investigate the statistical anisotropy and Gaussianity of temperature fluctuations of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe survey, using the Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis, Rescaled Range, and Scaled Windowed Variance methods. Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis shows that CMB fluctuations has a long-range correlation function with a multifractal behavior. By comparing the shuffled and surrogate series of CMB data, we conclude that the multifractality nature of the temperature fluctuation of CMB radiation is mainly due to the long-range correlations, and the map is consistent with a Gaussian distribution

Calculation and analysis of thermal-hydraulics fluctuations in pressurized water reactors

    , Article Annals of Nuclear Energy ; Volume 76 , 2015 , Pages 75-84 ; 03064549 (ISSN) Malmir, H ; Vosoughi, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2015
    Abstract
Analysis of thermal-hydraulics fluctuations in pressurized water reactors (e.g., local and global temperature or density fluctuations, as well as primary and charging pumps fluctuations) has various applications in calculation or measurement of the core dynamical parameters (temperature or density reactivity coefficients) in addition to thermal-hydraulics surveillance and diagnostics. In this paper, the thermal-hydraulics fluctuations in PWRs are investigated. At first, the single-phase thermal-hydraulics noise equations (in the frequency domain) are originally derived, without any simplifying assumptions. The fluctuations of all the coolant parameters, as well as the radial distribution of...

An experimental study on kerosene spray combustion under conventional and hot-diluted conditions

    , Article Combustion Science and Technology ; 2021 ; 00102202 (ISSN) Mardani, A ; Azimi, A ; Karimi Motaalegh Mahalegi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Bellwether Publishing, Ltd  2021
    Abstract
The combustion of kerosene spray under hot-diluted conditions and conventional conditions was experimentally investigated. By examining flame photographs, chemiluminescence images, and in-field temperature measurements, the separate effect of different variables including oxygen concentration, temperature and velocity of the co-flowing air, fuel flow rate and injection pressure, and eventually the type of spray nozzle on multiple parameters such as flame stability, structure, luminosity, temperature field, and qualitative CH radical distribution, as well as HCO and NO2 with lower precision, in the reaction region, have been studied. It was observed that an increment in injection pressure and...

Analysis of temperature distribution over a gas turbine shaft exposed to a swirl combustor flue

    , Article 2010 14th International Heat Transfer Conference, IHTC 14 ; Volume 5 , 2010 , Pages 183-190 ; 9780791849408 (ISBN) Aghakashi, V ; Saidi, M. H ; Ghafourian, A ; Mozafari, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Gas turbine shaft is generally exposed to high temperature gases and may seriously be affected and overheated due to temperature fluctuations in the combustion chamber. Considering vortex flow in the combustion chamber, it may increase the heat release rate and combustion efficiency and also control location of energy release. However, this may result in excess temperature on the combustor equipments and gas turbine shaft. Vortex flow in the vortex engine which is created by the geometry of combustion chamber and conditions of flow field is a bidirectional swirl flow that maintains the chamber wall cool. In this study a new gas turbine combustion chamber implementing a liner around the shaft...

    A thermally-resilient all-optical network-on-chip

    , Article Microelectronics Reliability ; Volume 99 , 2019 , Pages 74-86 ; 00262714 (ISSN) Karimi, R ; Koohi, S ; Tinati, M ; Hessabi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Optical networks-on-chip are introduced as an alternative for electrical interconnects in many-core systems, due to their low delay and power consumptions, as well as their high bandwidths. Despite these advantages, physical characteristics of the photonic components are highly sensitive to thermal variations, which results in optical data misrouting through the optical networks at the presence of temperature fluctuation. In this paper, we propose a thermally-resilient all-optical communication approach which improves reliability, as well as performance of the optical networks. For this purpose, we take advantages of auxiliary waveguides and a novel wavelength assignment approach to avoid...

An experimental study on permeability, diffusivity, and selectivity of CO2 and CH4 through [bmim][PF6] ionic liquid supported on an alumina membrane: Investigation of temperature fluctuations effects

    , Article Journal of Membrane Science ; Volume 362, Issue 1-2 , 2010 , Pages 346-352 ; 03767388 (ISSN) Barghi, S. H ; Adibi, M ; Rashtchian, D ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In order to define a new temperature correction factor in this study, accurate experimental values were presented for permeability and diffusivity of carbon dioxide and methane in imidazolium-based room temperature ionic liquid: [bmim][PF6] (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) immobilized on an inorganic membrane support. Results were presented as a function of temperature and pressure for temperatures within 300-320K and pressures below 50kPa. According to the literature, experimental values of permeability and diffusivity for CH4 in [bmim][PF6] vs. temperature are reported for the first time in this study. Results obtained for CO2 permeability revealed good agreement with data...
