Influence of nanoclay on morphology, mechanical properties and deformation mechanism of Polystyrene

    , Article Polymer - Plastics Technology and Engineering ; Vol. 53, issue. 2 , 2014 , p. 156-161 ; ISSN: 03602559 Akbari, B ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Polystyrene/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by melt intercalation method in this research. Morphology, tensile and impact properties and deformation mechanism of the samples were studied. To study the structure of nanocomposites, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques are utilized. The deformation mechanisms of different samples were examined via reflected and transmitted optical microscopy. The results reveal that incorporation of organoclay affects structure, mechanical properties and deformation mechanism of nanocomposite. Introduction of organoclay can facilitate initiation and growth of crazing mechanism in polystyrene at both conditions of loadings,...

    Abstract
Polystyrene- (Styrene Ethylene Butylene Styrene-Maleic Anhydride) (SEBS-MA) composites with/without organoclay were prepared by melt intercalation method. The morphology, tensile and impact properties and deformation mechanism of these compounds were investigated. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and reflected and transmitted optical microscopy techniques were used to study the morphology and deformation mechanisms. The results show that incorporation of SEBS with/without organoclay notably affects morphology, mechanical properties and plastic deformation of polystyrene. Introduction of SEBS with/without organoclay can facilitate initiation and growth of crazing mechanism...

Influence of PP-g-MA on morphology, mechanical properties and deformation mechanism of copolypropylene/clay nanocomposite

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 114, Issue 6 , 2009 , Pages 3751-3759 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Akbari, B ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Copolypropylene/organoclay nanocomposites are prepared by melt intercalation method in this research. Two different routes for addition of compatibilizer are examined, i.e. addition in the twin-screw extruder along with the polymer and the clay powder simultaneously and premixing the compatibilizer with the reinforcement in a batch mixer before addition to the polypropylene (PP) matrix. Morphology, tensile and impact properties and deformation mechanisms of the samples made via two procedures are studied and compared with those of the noncompatibilized system. To study the structure of nanocomposites, x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques are utilized. The...

The effect of cold-rolling prior to the inter-critical heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of 4340 steel with ferrite – Martensite microstructure

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 830 , 2022 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Hosseinifar, F ; Ekrami, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This study investigates the effect of cold rolling prior to inter-critical annealing on microstructure and mechanical properties of ferrite-martensite dual phase steel. Samples were heated to 850 °C for 1 h followed by oil quenching, then the steel sheet were cold rolled by 0%,10%,15% and 20% reduction in thickness. The inter-critical annealing treatment (750 °C, 120min) was performed to generate a ferrite-martensite microstructure. Microstructural studies showed that increasing the applied cold rolling, leading to increase in volume fraction of martensite and decrease in ferrite grain size. Mechanical properties of dual phase steel were measured by tensile, impact and hardness tests....
