    Abstract
Interfacial tension is one of the very important parameters in pharmacology science, chemical engineering and petroleum engineering. The interfacial tension between pure hydrocarbons and water is widely used in chemical and petroleum engineering and so that it is highly desirable to find its accurate values. In this study a new unique correlation has been developed based on a comprehensive database of pure hydrocarbons-water interfacial tension values which contained both aliphatic and aromatic compounds (32 different hydrocarbons) with pressure ranges of 0.1-300 MPa and temperature ranges of 252.44-550 K. The proposed correlation uses the density difference between pure hydrocarbon and...

An approximate method for the surge response of the tension leg platform

    , Article Journal of Marine Science and Application ; Vol. 13, issue. 1 , March , 2014 , p. 99-104 Shoghi, R ; Tabeshpour, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The solution for the Duffing equation in a nonlinear vibration problem is studied in this paper. Clearly, in the case of the perturb parameter being a larger value, the traditional perturbation method is no longer valid but the Homotopy Perturbation Method (HPM) is applicable usually. HPM is used to solve the weak and strong nonlinear differential equations for finding the perturbed frequency of the response. The obtained frequencies via HPM and the approximate method have good accordance for weak and strong nonlinear differential equations. Additionally, the calculated responses by use of the approximate method are compared with the responses obtained from the Numerical method in the time...

Effect of magnetic field treatment on interfacial tension of CTAB nano-emulsion: developing a novel agent for enhanced oil recovery

    , Article Journal of Molecular Liquids ; Volume 261 , July , 2018 , Pages 107-114 ; 01677322 (ISSN) Saeedi Dehaghani, A. H ; Badizad, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2018
    Abstract
Nanoemulsion is a novel type of emulsified solutions holding great promises for utilizing in industrial applications. Although microemulsions have been the subject of numerous studies in past decades, however, nanoemulsions are quite virgin and merit detailed investigation to scrutinize their characteristics specific to reservoir engineering, in particular, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). To this end, the present study is an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of a specific nanoemulsion for oil displacement through porous media. In this regard, flooding experiments were designed and Hexa decyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), which is a cationic surfactant, was used as the emulsifying agent....

"Bubble bunch" phenomenon in operation of a bubble column

    , Article Central European Journal of Chemistry ; Volume 7, Issue 4 , 2009 , Pages 803-808 ; 18951066 (ISSN) Bastani, D ; Baghaei, A ; Sarrafi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
While studying the operation of a rectangular bubble column in laboratory scale, it was observed that under certain circumstances tiny bubbles attach to larger bubbles without causing them to coalesce. In other words, bubbles with large diameters (d > 5 mm) swept tiny bubbles (d < 1 mm) in their way to the top of the column resulting in grapelike clusters of bubbles. This phenomenon was named "bubble bunch" by us and its effect on total gas holdup and interfacial area was discussed. Although it was found to have almost no affect on gas holdup, bubble bunch can increase the interfacial area up to 10% more than what is anticipated in the literature. The process of film thinning was modeled for...

Simulation study of the Gachsaran asphaltene behavior within the interface of oil/water emulsion: a case study

    , Article Colloids and Interface Science Communications ; Volume 33 , 2019 ; 22150382 (ISSN) Saeedi Dehaghani, A. H ; Soodbakhsh Taleghani, M ; Badizad, M. H ; Daneshfar, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2019
    Abstract
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was utilized to study the role of asphaltene extracted from Gachsaran (an Iranian oilfield) at the synthetic oil-water interface. In agreement with experimental data, IFTs predicted by MD simulation for heptol/brine system showed a minima at around 50 vol.% n-heptane, reflecting the highest contribution of asphaltene into the interface. At greater n-heptane fractions, IFT was increased steadily. Simulation results suggest the asphaltene propensity for remaining in the bulk heptol phase rather related to the fraction of toluene in the mixture. Heptol ingredients, i.e., toluene and heptane, act differently with respect to asphaltene, where former tends to...

    , Article Technology and Health Care ; Volume 12, Issue 4 , 2004 , Pages 333-342 ; 09287329 (ISSN) Kasra, M ; Parnianpour, M ; Shirazi Adl, A ; Wang, J. L ; Grynpas, M. D ; Sharif University of Technology
    IOS Press  2004
    Abstract
We investigated the effect of loading rate on tensile properties of sheep bone-anulus-bone specimens in axial direction. Disc anulus Samples with adjacent bone attachments were prepared from lateral, posterior and anterior regions of sheep lumbar spinal segments. The specimens were then tested at different strain rates under non-destructive cyclic tensile loading followed by destructive tensile loading. Each specimen was prepared by embedding the bony parts in the polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) exposing the anulus portion to support tension. The results of non-destructive cyclic tests indicated a decrease in the hysteresis energy loss as strain rate increased. In the destructive tests, no...

On the plastic analysis of concentrically braced frames with shear panel, obtaining predetermined collapse mechanism

    , Article Structural Design of Tall and Special Buildings ; Volume 24, Issue 5 , 2015 , Pages 366-395 ; 15417794 (ISSN) Akbari Hamed, A ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Summary Conventional design methods do not ensure that the desired collapse mechanism is developed at target displacement. In this paper, a case study is presented to analyze concentrically braced frames with steel shear panel (CBFSP). Also, extensive investigation in the failure modes are made, to have the global yielding mode at the final state. For this purpose, each of one-story, three-story, six-story and nine-story CBFSP models were decomposed into three parts where the members' closed-form equations of internal forces were identified and superimposed. On the basis of the kinematic theorem of plastic collapse, the possible mechanisms and the related energy equations were defined to...

Experimental investigation on the behavior of corrugated steel shear wall subjected to the different angle of trapezoidal plate

    , Article Structural Design of Tall and Special Buildings ; Volume 26, Issue 17 , 2017 ; 15417794 (ISSN) Hosseinzadeh, L ; Emami, F ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Studies on corrugated steel shear walls (CSSWs) generally indicate noticeable increase of energy absorption, as well as increasing shear buckling capacity of corrugated plates being more likely rather than the flat plates. In this paper, the effect of variation in the angle of trapezoidal plate on the behavior of CSSWs has extensively been investigated. Three specimens of CSSW with 1 story and single bay in half scale are tested under cyclic load. The observations of experiment do indicate that stress concentration has been increased in the corner of subpanels, by increasing of the corrugation angle. Development of the tensile field and wall yield and damage depends on the geometry of the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahdavi, Ehsan (Author) ; Taghikhani, Vahid (Supervisor) ; Ayatollahi, Shahabeddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Interfacial Tension (IFT) behavior of crude oil/CO2 system is recognized as the main factor affecting the efficiency of CO2 flooding during enhanced oil recovery (EOR) process. Adding paraffin group hydrocarbon to asphaltenic crude oils as an asphaltene precipitant component is aimed to mimic asphaltene precipitation process during crude oil production and transportation. Asphaltene precipitation would critically effects the IFT behavior of crude oil/CO2 systems. In the first part of this study, the equilibrium densities of oil samples which contain different heptane ratio were measured at different pressures and the temperature of 323 K. Then, the equilibrium IFT between CO2 and the crude...

Temperature and composition effect on CO2 miscibility by interfacial tension measurement

    , Article Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data ; Volume 58, Issue 5 , March , 2013 , Pages 1168-1175 ; 00219568 (ISSN) Zolghadr, A ; Escrochi, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Crude oil reservoirs have different temperatures, compositions, and pressures, therefore oil recovery performance by CO2 injection varies from one case to another. Furthermore, it is predicted that lower interfacial tension between injected CO2 and reservoir fluid results in more oil recovery. In this study, we investigate the effect of temperature on the equilibrium interfacial tension between CO2 and three different oil fluids at different pressures. Also minimum miscible pressure (MMP) is measured by the vanishing interfacial tension (VIT) technique to determine the temperature effect on the CO2 miscible gas injection. The results on different pure and mixtures of hydrocarbon fluids show...

    Abstract
This paper attempts to describe the fatigue response of a foam the core sandwich composite with unsymmetrical carbon/glass face sheets under tension-tension cyclic loading. The laminate is a critical element of the structure of a light full composite airplane which was determined through the stress analyses for numerous load cases. The face sheets, over a PVC foam the core, consist of two similar woven E-glass fibers following unidirectional carbon fibers with epoxy resin. Extensive fatigue data were generated for the S-N diagram of this laminate. Based on the static FEM analyses, two designs for the configuration of foam to solid laminate bonding zone have been investigated. Hence, the...

    Abstract
A new shear strengthening method involving post-tensioning of the critical shear region of reinforced concrete beams is investigated. Thirty-one experiments were carried out using 24 specimens. Theoretical load-deflection relations are obtained from moment-curvature analysis using fiber cross sections and taking into consideration the effects of different concrete confinements along the beam length. A theoretical shear strength model that includes three shear resisting components in the critical shear region of the strengthened beams is provided. Experimental results from beams with and without shear strengthening are compared with calculated load-deflection relations and predicted shear...

Investigation the Optimum Condition for Gas Injection into the Oil Reservoirs by Measuring the Interfacial Tension

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Roham, Mohammad (Author) ; Ghotbi, Cyrus (Supervisor) ; Robert, Marc (Supervisor) ; Taghikhani, Vahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Interfacial Tension (IFT) as a main parameter for gas flooding efficiency in oil reservoirs depends highly on pressure, temperature, and composition of the reservoir fluids. Therefore, it is important to measure this parameter at real reservoir condition for successful field development plan. In this study, an axisymmetric drop shape analysis (ADSA) has been utilized to measure the equilibrium IFTs in crude oil-flue gas systems at different temperatures and pressures. Moreover, minimum miscibility pressures (MMP) of crude oil/flue gas and crude oil/N2 systems at different temperature levels are determined by applying vanishing interfacial tension (VIT) technique. Then, the effect of oil...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bayat, Amir (Author) ; Moshfegh, Ali Reza (Supervisor) ; Azimirad, Rouhollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces find many applications in different fields of science. The aerospace industry is one such field that can take the advantage of superhydrophobicity for anti-icing coatings. In order to make hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces on hydrophilic materials, two-step process is usually need, at first, making a rough surface and then modifying it with hydrophobic coatings with low surface free energy. In this research, we have used glancing angle deposition (GLAD) RF sputtering technique to fabricate Teflon coated tungsten on glass substrate for obtaining hydrophobic surface. GLAD approach is a method to grow structures such as nanorods and zigzag...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amini, Mansoureh (Author) ; Seyed Reihani, Morteza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Surface tension is the most important interfacial parameter of a liquid. This quantity plays a key role in many processes such as extraction, distillation, absorption and chemical reactions. Various methods are proposed for measuring this quantity among which, the laser based methods are the most accurate ones. Unlike most of the mechanical methods, laser based methods remotely measure the surface tension. The aim of the current thesis is to measure the surface tension using laser beam, more specifically using homodyne detection system. This method implemented in both reflected and transmitted modes. In each of the mentioned methods, first the laser beam was incident to the liquid-air...

Density and temperature dependencies of liquid surface tension

    , Article Iranian Journal of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering ; Volume 30, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 79-90 ; 10219986 (ISSN) Alizadeh Osgouei, H ; Parsafar, G. A ; Akbarzadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this paper the density and temperature dependencies of surface tension are investigated. Using the Lennard-Jones (12,6), as an effective pair interaction potential, a linear expression is derived for isotherms of γ /ρ 2 versus ρ 2 for some normal and ChloroFluoroCarbons (CFCs) fluids, where is surface tension and ρ = 1/v is molar density. The linearity behavior of the derived equation is well fitted onto the experimental data of surface tension for monatomic, diatomic, nonpolar, polar, hydrogen-bonded and chlorofluorocarbons. In addition, the temperature dependence of surface tension for 20 different fluids is examined, in which the contributions of both terms of the average effective...
