    Abstract
This paper presents a novel method for fabrication of bone-like Ti6Al4V foamy core@compact shell composite for utilization as substitutive implant for cortical bone having porous core. Seven prototypes with core-diameters of 0, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 mm surrounded by dense shells of respective thicknesses 8, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and 0 were produced by an innovative two-stage packing/compaction sintering method. Density, porosity, Young's modulus and compression strength of the prototypes depended on the core diameter. Mechanical strength and Young's modulus of 10@16 (10 mm core, 16 mm diameter prototypes) resembled that of the human ulna bone. Creation of foam at the center was achieved by...

Effect of sintering temperature and siliconcarbide fraction on density, mechanical properties and fracture mode of alumina-silicon carbide micro/nanocomposites

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 37 , May , 2012 , Pages 251-255 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Rahimnejad Yazdi, A ; Baharvandi, H ; Abdizadeh, H ; Purasad, J ; Fathi, A ; Ahmadi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this study Al2O3-SiC micro/nanocomposites have been fabricated by mixing alumina nanopowders and silicon carbide micro/nanopowders, followed by hot pressing at 1550, 1600, 1650 and 1700°C. The density, mechanical properties and fracture mode of Al2O3-SiC composites containing different volume fractions (2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10% and 15%) of micro/nanoscale SiC particles were investigated and compared with those of alumina. The relative density of composites could reach values very close to theoretical density, especially after sintering at 1700°C. However, relative density declined by increasing the SiC fraction at the same sintering temperature. The flexural strength of composites was best for...

Comprehensive study on the effect of SiC and carbon additives on the pressureless sintering and microstructural and mechanical characteristics of new ultra-high temperature ZrB2 ceramics

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 41, Issue 9, Part A , November , 2015 , Pages 11456–11463 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Khoeini, M ; Nemati, A ; Zakeri, M ; Tamizifar, M ; Samadi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The combined effects of SiC and carbon additives on the densification, structure and characteristics of pressureless sintered ZrB2-SiC ceramic composites were studied. The ZrB2-SiC (1-10wt%) composite powders were mixed by 1-2wt% carbon. The prepared powder mixtures were then cold-consolidated and sintered in argon environment in the temperature range of 1800-2100°C for 2h. The constituted phases and microstructural evolutions were studied using x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive x-ray detector. The obtained results concluded that the densification was increased by extending the sintering time and also by prior holding...

Fabrication of FINEMET bulk alloy from amorphous powders by spark plasma sintering

    , Article Powder Technology ; Volume 289 , 2016 , Pages 163-168 ; 00325910 (ISSN) Gheiratmand, T ; Madaah Hosseini, H. R ; Davami, P ; Sarafidis, C ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Finemet bulk soft magnetic alloy was fabricated by spark plasma sintering of the milled ribbons. The amorphous melt-spun ribbons were milled for 36min by high energy vibrational mill and then sieved to separate particles smaller than 125μm. The size distribution of particles was determined by a laser diffraction particle size analyzer. Spark plasma sintering was carried out at super-cooled liquid region for short times of 7 and 21min. The structure of bulk samples was characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and transmission electron microscopy techniques. The magnetization and coercivity of samples were measured using SQUID...

Suppression of grain growth in sub-micrometer alumina via two-step sintering method

    , Article Journal of the European Ceramic Society ; Volume 29, Issue 8 , 2009 , Pages 1371-1377 ; 09552219 (ISSN) Razavi Hesabi, Z ; Haghighatzadeh, M ; Mazaheri, M ; Galusek, D ; Sadrnezhaad, Kh ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Two-step sintering (TSS) was applied to suppress the accelerated grain growth of sub-micron (∼150 nm) alumina powder. The application of an optimum TSS regime led to a remarkable decrease of grain size down to ∼500 nm; while the grain size of the full-dense structures produced by conventional sintering ranged between 1 and 2 μm. To find how important the temperatures at sintering steps might be, several TSS regimes were conducted. The results showed that the temperatures at both sintering steps play vital roles in densification and grain growth of the alumina compacts. Based on the results, the optimum regime consisted of heating the green bodies up to 1250 °C (first step) and then holding...

Pressureless sintering of ZrB 2 ceramics codoped with TiC and graphite

    , Article International Journal of Refractory Metals and Hard Materials ; Volume 81 , 2019 , Pages 189-195 ; 02634368 (ISSN) Khoeini, M ; Nemati, A ; Zakeri, M ; Shahedi Asl, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
In this research, the pressureless sintering of ZrB 2 composites were studied to obtain the highest densification and investigate the effects of TiC (2–10% wt) and graphite (1–2% wt) additives on the sinterability. The results showed that by adding TiC, the porosity and water absorption of the samples decreased, resulting in an increase in the density of the samples up to ~98% of the theoretical density. The addition of graphite and TiC reduced the surface oxide layers, improved the density and prevented the grain growth. The graphite additive reacted with B 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 and allowed the system to achieve a complete densification at 2000 °C. Both TiC and graphite additives were completely...

Sintering behavior of Al-AlN-nanostructured composite powder synthesized by high-energy ball milling

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 473, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 116-122 ; 09258388 (ISSN) Abdoli, H ; Asgharzadeh, H ; Salahi, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
High strength Al-AlN composites were synthesized via high-energy milling and sintering technique. Al-X wt.% AlN (X = 0, 2.5, 5 and 10) composite powders were milled in a planetary ball mill for 25 h. Morphology, particle size distribution, crystallite size, micro-strain, and microhardness of milled powders were studied. Ball-milled powders were degassed at 400 °C for 30 min. After uniaxial cold compaction, composite compacts were sintered at 650 °C for 20, 30 and 60 min under N2 atmosphere. Effects of reinforcement content, degassing treatment and sintering time on the sinterability of powders were investigated. The results revealed that the sinterability was degraded by increasing the...
