An optimal hybrid power generation scheme in a power system - A practical experience

    , Article International Review of Electrical Engineering ; Volume 8, Issue 5 , 2013 , Pages 1566-1577 ; 18276660 (ISSN) Sebt Ahmadi, S. M ; Ebrahimi, S ; Pirnazari, A ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Electricity generation in vicinity of the load centers seems rather imperative since the costs associated with the reinforcement of new transmission lines are hugely intolerable or maybe this process cannot be practically applicable. There are many means of power generation in addition to the conventional ones among them are solar cells, wind turbines, and thermal units. In this paper, these sources of power generation are involved to manage a power system of an island region. As a consequence, the possibility of exploiting the constructive effects of such green energy resources would be approved. In respect with a reliable system adequacy management, short-term load forecasting (STLF) is...

Unit commitment using particle swarm-based-simulated annealing optimization approach

    , Article 2007 IEEE Swarm Intelligence Symposium, SIS 2007, Honolulu, HI, 1 April 2007 through 5 April 2007 ; 2007 , Pages 297-302 ; 1424407087 (ISBN); 9781424407088 (ISBN) Sadati, N ; Hajian, M ; Zamani, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a new approach based on hybrid Particle Swarm-Based- Simulated Annealing Optimization (PSO-B-SA) for solving thermal unit commitment (UC) problems is proposed. The PSO-B-SA presented in this paper solves the two sub-problems simultaneously and independently; unit-scheduled problem that determines on/off status of units and the economic dispatch problem for production amount of generating units. Problem formulation of UC is defined as minimization of total objective function while satisfying all the associated constraints such as minimum up and down time, production limits and the required demand and spinning reserve. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can...

IGDT based risk-constrained strategic bidding of GenCos considering bilateral contracts

    , Article 2013 21st Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering, ICEE 2013 ; 2013 ; 9781467356343 (ISBN) Kazemi, M ; Mohammadi Ivatloo, B ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A new risk-constrained bidding curve construction method is presented in this paper. A Day-ahead energy market has been chosen for competition of GenCos and the Information Gap Decision Theory (IGDT) is used for modelling the Day-ahead market price uncertainty and its corresponding risk. The bilateral contracts of the GenCo are also considered in the proposed framework. A Bi-level optimization problem is incorporated in the proposed method to guarantee a pre-specified level of revenue. The proposed IGDT based method constructs the non-decreasing bidding curve while dispatching units based on the uncertain forecasted prices of the next-day market. The verification of the proposed method is...

Optimized midterm preventive maintenance outage scheduling of thermal generating units

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Vol. 27, issue. 3 , 2012 , p. 1354-1365 ; ISSN: 08858950 Abiri-Jahromi, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Parvania, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper addresses the midterm preventive maintenance outage scheduling problem of thermal generating units which is becoming increasingly important due to the aging of power generation fleet. In this context, a novel midterm preventive maintenance outage scheduler is proposed based on decision tree and mixed integer linear formation which explicitly considers the thermal units aging momentum in terms of failure rate. This allows the system operators to determine the thermal units' maintenance outage window based on the cost/benefit analysis of preventive maintenance tasks while optimizing the time interval between consecutive maintenance tasks. Additionally, the division of the year-long...

Modified artificial bee colony algorithm based on fuzzy multi-objective technique for optimal power flow problem

    , Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Volume 95 , 2013 , Pages 206-213 ; 03787796 (ISSN) Khorsandi, A ; Hosseinian, S. H ; Ghazanfari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
This paper presents a fuzzy based modified artificial bee colony (MABC) algorithm to solve discrete optimal power flow (OPF) problem that has both discrete and continuous variables considering valve point effects. The OPF problem is formulated as a multi-objective mixed-integer nonlinear problem, where optimal settings of the OPF control variables for simultaneous minimization of total fuel cost of thermal units, total emission, total real power losses, and voltage deviation are obtained. The proposed approach is applied to the OPF problem on IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 118-bus test systems. The performance and operation of the proposed approach is compared with the conventional methods. The...
