The related papers were grouped into two main categories and a summary of experimental and theoretical studies is presented. Based on this investigation, the application of a heat pipe heat exchanger or a thermosyphon heat exchanger in the conventional air conditioning systems is recommended as an efficient means for energy savings and dehumidification enhancement to maintain acceptable room conditions. This review shows that the literature on the application of heat pipe heat exchangers in air conditioning systems is very limited. Therefore, much more...

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 126 , 2017 , Pages 1-8 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Shafii, M. B ; Ahmadi, H ; Faegh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2017
    Abstract
In this study, a novel Magnetically Variable Conductance Thermosyphon Heat Pipe (MVCTHP) was investigated experimentally. The possibility of deactivating a portion of evaporator length and subsequently altering heat pipe resistance by positioning a steel ball inside the evaporator and moving it by an external magnet was studied. The effect of various ball positions in the evaporator and inclination angles on heat pipe performance was studied at 30, 60, 90 and 120 W. The results indicated that at a given heat input, moving the ball away from the beginning of the evaporator of heat pipe increases its thermal resistance. Furthermore, by increasing heat input, MVCTHP performance for various ball...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bahmanabadi, Amir (Author) ; Behshad Shafiei, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
technologies for cooling of electronic devices, have high efficiency due to the heat transfer in two-phase state. In this project, experimental effects of asymmetric triangle groove has been studied on the boiling fluid and effect of the motion on the boiling and heat pipe. Therefore, the experiment has been done by 3 heat pipes and each with 3 plates. The plates consist of a smooth plate, a plate with triangle groove and a plate with rectangle groove. Each heat pipe was filled by methanol in volumetric percentage from 10 to 60. The results show that 20 percent methanol is the optimum for all kind of heat pipe, which has been used. In addition, it is shown that heat pipe with triangle groove...

    Abstract
An experimental study was conducted on a solar hybrid system to transform the waste heat of photovoltaic module (PV module) into a useful heat which could be used in a solar desalination (SD) system in order to produce freshwater (scenario 1). Then, different parameters such as the amount of the produced freshwater by condensed vapor on the glass cover and basin side walls were taken into consideration after the fabrication of the SD system. Furthermore, the effect of water depth in the tray and the effect of the presence of a fan inside the basin (scenario 3) on water yield (kg/m2hr) were evaluated. In addition, the effects of using a mirror to lead the reflected light on the PV module and...

Experimental examination of utilizing novel radially grooved surfaces in the evaporator of a thermosyphon heat pipe

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 169 , 2020 Bahmanabadi, A ; Faegh, M ; Shafii, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
The application of heat pipes with flat evaporators in cooling electronic devices has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. Increasing the rate of heat transfer in their evaporator by utilizing structured surfaces is considered as a prominent method for reducing the thermal resistance of the heat pipes. In this study, the performance of a thermosyphon heat pipe with novel radially rectangular-grooved and radially inclined triangular-grooved evaporator surfaces was evaluated experimentally. It is hypothesized that the radial grooves may enhance the performance by inducing rotational motions and increasing the heat transfer coefficients. Based on the results, the optimum filling ratio...

Use of Numerical Simulation to Study the Reduction of Steam Turbine Back Pressure Via Implementing Heat Pipe in Upstream Air Condenser

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mashayekh, Kazem (Author) ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Iran's experience shows that either single or combined power generation cycles, face heavy summer performance deficiencies. The most limitation of power generation in steam cycles is due to their poor condenser performance. The less condenser performance, the more turbine back pressure, and the more turbine back pressure, the less cycle power generation. The main objective of the present study is to reduce steam turbine back pressure in the combined cycle of an organic Rankine-vapor compression refrigeration by installing heat pipes in suitable locations inside the Air cooled condense (ACC). In order to do so, a commercial numerical simulation solver (FLUENT) is used to find the most suitable...

    Abstract
The present study attempts to use the methanol-silver nanofluid filled heat pipe heat exchanger and compares the effectiveness as well as the energy saving with pure methanol. A heat pipe heat exchanger has been tested in a test rig under steady-state conditions. The lengths of both the evaporator and the condenser sections of the heat exchanger were 700 mm, and its central adiabatic section had a length of 160 mm. The heat exchanger had 36 plate finned copper thermosyphons arranged in three rows. The inlet air temperature across the evaporator section was varied in the range of 33-43 °C while the inlet air temperature to the condenser section was nearly constant to be 13 °C. First, pure...
