    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 21, Issue 4 , 2014 , Pages 1415-1423 ; ISSN: 10263098 Sadeghi, H ; Baghani, M ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, strain gradient thermo-elasticity formulation for axisymmetric Functionally Graded (FG) thick-walled cylinders is presented. For this purpose, the elastic strain energy density function is considered to be a function of gradient of strain tensor in addition to the strain tensor. The material properties are assumed to vary according to a power law in radial direction. Using the constitutive equations and equation of equilibrium in the cylindrical coordinates, a fourth order non-homogenous governing equation for thermo-elastic analysis of thick-walled FG cylinders subjected to thermal and mechanical loadings is obtained and solved numerically. Results show that the intrinsic...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khalili Mahani, Amin (Author) ; Kouchakzadeh, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis the dynamic behavior of the thick-walled shell with variable thickness is investigated. Such structures are used in a variety of industries including aerospace, oil, gas and petro-chemistry. In this study, the dynamic behavior of a rotating truncated conical thick-shell with various geometries is investigated. For this purpose, modal analysis is performed using the refined finite element method. Then, the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are calculated for several different geometries. Also, the relationship between geometrical variables such as thickness, the ratio of length to radius, ratio of cross-sectional radius and so on, with the natural frequency of...

    Abstract
In this article, an analytical elastic-plastic solution for thick-walled cylinders made of Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) subjected to internal pressure and thermal loading is presented. Based on the experimental results, a mathematical model to predict the yielding through the thickness of FG AlA359/SiCp cylinder is developed. It is shown that under the temperature gradient loading, there is a point in the cylinder where the circumferential stress changes from compressive to tensile. The position of this point depends on the geometry and material properties of the FG cylinder and is independent of the temperature gradient

Nonlinear transient transfinite element thermal analysis of thick-walled FGM cylinders with temperature-dependent material properties

    Abstract
An algorithm for investigation of nonlinear systems by the transfinite element method is presented. Basically, the transformation techniques have been developed for linear systems. Nonlinear transient heat transfer of a thick FGM cylinder with temperature-dependent material properties is investigated in the present paper to clarify the proposed algorithm. Two main novelties of the present research are: (1) incorporating the temperature-dependency of the material properties in the thermal analysis which lead to highly non-linear governing equations and (2) proposing an updating numerical transfinite element procedure to solve the resulted highly nonlinear governing equations. To reduce the...

Nonlinear transient heat transfer and thermoelastic analysis of thick-walled FGM cylinder with temperature-dependent material properties using hermitian transfinite element

    , Article Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology ; Volume 23, Issue 10 , 2009 , Pages 2635-2644 ; 1738494X (ISSN) Azadi, M ; Azadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Nonlinear transient heat transfer and thermoelastic stress analyses of a thick-walled FGM cylinder with temperature-dependent materials are performed by using the Hermitian transfinite element method. Temperature-dependency of the material properties has not been taken into account in transient thermoelastic analysis, so far. Due to the mentioned dependency, the resulting governing FEM equations of transient heat transfer are highly nonlinear. Furthermore, in all finite element analysis performed so far in the field, Lagrangian elements have been used. To avoid an artificial local heat source at the mutual boundaries of the elements, Hermitian elements are used instead in the present...

Analysis of concrete pressure vessels in the framework of continuum damage mechanics

    Abstract
In this article, a constitutive model in the framework of continuum damage mechanics is proposed to simulate the elastic behavior of concrete in tension and compression states. We assume two parts for Gibbs potential energy function: elastic and damage parts. In order to obtain the elastic-damage constitutive relation with the internal variables, two damage thermodynamic release rates in tension and compression derived from the elastic part of Gibbs potential energy are introduced. Also, two anisotropic damage tensors (tension and compression) are defined which characterize the tensile and compressive behaviors of concrete. Furthermore, two different linear hardening rules for tension and...

Design of thick-walled cylindrical vessels under internal pressure based on elasto-plastic approach

    Abstract
By considering the Bauschinger effect and the yield criterion of Tresca, an exact elasto-plastic analytical solution for a thick-walled cylindrical vessel made of elastic linear-hardening material is derived. Having the working pressure and geometric dimensions of the vessel, the distribution of the hoop and equivalent stresses are optimized in the way that the distribution of stresses becomes smooth in the vessel wall. Based on two optimizing methods of the hoop and equivalent stresses, the best autofrettage pressure is determined. It is shown that this pressure is more than the working pressure and depends on the three following variables: Bauschinger effect, working pressure and geometric...

Structural analysis of stiffened FGM thick walled cylinders by application of a new cylindrical super element

    , Article World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology ; Volume 58 , 2009 , Pages 116-121 ; 2010376X (ISSN) Moeini, A ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Structural behavior of ring stiffened thick walled cylinders made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) is investigated in this paper. Functionally graded materials are inhomogeneous composites which are usually made from a mixture of metal and ceramic. The gradient compositional variation of the constituents from one surface to the other provides an elegant solution to the problem of high transverse shear stresses that are induced when two dissimilar materials with large differences in material properties are bonded. FGM formation of the cylinder is modeled by power-law exponent and the variation of characteristics is supposed to be in radial direction. A finite element formulation is...
