    Pyrolytic carbon coating for cytocompatibility of titanium oxide nanoparticles: a promising candidate for medical applications [electronic resource]

    Abstract
    Nanoparticles for biomedical use must be cytocompatible with the biological environment that they are exposed to. Current research has focused on the surface functionalization of nanoparticles by using proteins, polymers, thiols and other organic compounds. Here we show that inorganic nanoparticles such as titanium oxide can be coated by pyrolytic carbon (PyC) and that the coating has cytocompatible properties. Pyrolization and condensation of methane formed a thin layer of pyrolytic carbon on the titanium oxide core. The formation of the PyC shell retards coalescence and sintering of the ceramic phase.     The development of thin layer structures on flexible current collectors has become as an effective strategy for preparing advanced portable and wearable power sources. Herein, a flexible and efficient electrode was fabricated based on electrospun porous carbon nanofibers (PCNFs) substrate with elaborately designed thin layer Co3V2O8-Ni3V2O8 core–shell nanostructures (Co3V2O8-Ni3V2O8 TLs@PCNFs).     Abstract
    The drying of saffron stigma was investigated in a laboratory infrared dryer. The effect of temperature on the drying rate of samples at various temperatures (60,70...110 °C) was studied. The drying time decreased with an increase in drying air temperature. The constant-rate period is absent from the drying curve. The drying of saffron occurred in the falling rate period.     The aim of this project is to achieve a semi permeable high flux membrane with a reasonable salt rejection for the treatment of low osmotic pressure water. A thin film composite membrane consists of three polymeric layers was studied in this project. These layers were polyester support, polysulfone sub layer and polyamine selective layer.     In this work, high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) coupled with multivariate image analysis (MIA) is proposed as a fast and reliable tool for authentication and adulteration detection of Iranian saffron samples based on their HPTLC fingerprints. At first, the secondary metabolites of saffron were extracted using ultrasonic-assisted solvent extraction (UASE) which was optimized using central composite design (CCD).     Thin-layer drying characteristics of pistachio nuts were determined experimentally as a function of temperature, relative humidity and air velocity. Six mathematical models (Page model, modified Page model, exponential model, diffusion model, two term exponential model and Thompson model) for describing the thin-layer drying behavior of pistachio nuts were investigated. Tests were conducted using four air temperatures (25, 40, 55 and 70 °C), three air velocities (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 m/s) and two levels of relative humidity (5% and 20%) and three replications for each treatment.     To investigate boiling heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids, transient quenching experiments of a high temperature silver sphere in water-based nanofluids with Ag and TiO2 nanoparticles were performed. A silver sphere with a diameter of 10 mm and an initial temperature of 700 °C was quenched in these nanofluids at a temperature of 90 °C. The results showed a considerable reduction in the quenching ability of nanofluids compared to that of pure water. The presence of nanoparticles in water caused the film boiling mode to vanish at lower temperatures depending on the mixture concentration.     Azo dyes are common dye groups widely used in different industries. Industrial effluents which contain these dyes pervade water resources and have various known and unknown physiological effects on living organisms. In this study, methyl red (MR) was proposed as a model azo dye to examine the capability of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 9763 for cleavage of the azo bond leading to decolourization.     Zinc oxide thin films were deposited on soda-lime glass substrates from an aqueous zinc- containing complex by two-stage chemical deposition (TSCD) method. Longmuir adsorption model showed that the adsorption of atoms on the surface of the substrate was typically physical. The relation between the fractional coverage, θ, with the equilibrium constant of the adsorption reaction was nonlinear indicating that the adsorption was non-ideal.
